The song, “You To Me Are Everything”, was originally recorded by The Real Thing in 1976
Disco classic “You To Me Are Everything” was written by Ken Gold and Michael Denne and recorded by British Soul/disco quartet The Real Thing in 1976. After a number of stand alone singles, the track was the first cut from their debut album and became their first hit, topping the UK chart in July and making No.22 in Australia. It was a smaller hit Stateside, where it peaked at No.64.
You would think this song had been covered dozens of times by now, but perhaps many would rather preserve the original’s sound than offer any kind of alternative. There have, however, been two notable recordings. The first came from UK singer Sonia. Her version was the third track to come from her second, self-titled album and was released in November 1991 reaching No.13 in the UK and No.14 in Ireland.
The second came from former child actor turned mid-90’s pop star, Sean Maguire. His version was also recorded for his second album, “Spirit”, in 1995 and released as a single in November that year. The song reached No.16 in the UK.
But whose version is the best? THE REAL THING’s original, SONIA’s credible cover or SEAN’s offering?
