COVER vs ORIGINAL: ‘Nathan Jones’

The song, “Nathan Jones”, was originally recorded by The Supremes in 1971

Kathleen Wakefield and Leonard Caston (b.1943) wrote the song “Nathan Jones” for The Supremes (Mary Wilson, Cindy Birdsong and Jean Terrell) for their album “Touch”. It was recorded by all three members of the trio and released as the lead single in April 1971, peaking at No.16 in the US, where it has gone on to sell over a million copies, and No.5 in the UK.

In 1988, “Nathan Jones” was recorded by another hugely successful all female trio, Bananarama, for their “Greatest Hits Collection“. It was released as the second single at the end of November that year and reached No.15 in the UK and No.16 in Ireland, while the album would go on to sell many millions of copies around the world.

But whose version is the best? THE SUPREMES’ original or BANANARAMA’s cover?
