The song, “It’s Raining Men”, was originally recorded by The Weather Girls in 1982
Paul Jabara (1948-1992) and Paul Shaffer (b.1949) wrote the song “It’s Raining Men” for The Weather Girls – Izora Armstead (1942-2004) and Martha Wash (b.1953) – for their third studio album, “Success”. The track was the lead single and was released in September 1982, peaking at No.46 in America and No.2 in the UK, where it has sold over 400,000 copies.
The song was reworked by Martha Wash and RuPaul in 1998 and made No.1 on the US Dance chart and No.21 on the UK singles chart but the best known cover comes from former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell in 2001. Her version topped the UK chart and was a top ten hit in over twenty countries internationally. The song was included on the sountrack to the film ‘Bridget Jones’ Diary’ as well as being the lead single from Halliwell’s second solo album, “Scream If You Wanna Go Faster”.
But which version is the best? THE WEATHER GIRLS’ original or GERI’s cover?
