The song, “Put A Little Love In Your Heart”, was originally recorded by Jackie DeShannon in 1969
American singer Jackie DeShannon (b.1941) co-wrote the song “Put A Little Love In Your Heart” with Jimmy Holiday (1934-1987) and Randy Myers for her seventeenth studio album of the same name in 1969. The track was released as the lead single in June that year and peaked at No.4 in America and No.12 in Canada, becoming her highest charting single in both territories.
The song was covered by Annie Lennox (b.1954) and Al Green (b.1946) in 1988 for the soundtrack to the film ‘Scrooged’ that starred Bill Murray. Their version was produced by Annie’s fellow Eurythmic partner Dave Stewart and went to No.9 in America and No.2 in Canada. It was also a top ten hit in Australia and across much of mainland Europe. The song peaked at No.28 in the UK.
But which version is the best? JACKIE’s original or ANNIE & AL’s cover?
