UK Top 40 Singles Chart for 2nd June 1985

So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Richard Skinner broadcast from 5pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales.

This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week there were six new entrys, fourteen climbers and four non-movers! And it was announced like this…

40. Phil Bailey – “Walking On The Chinese Wall”
Former chart topper Phil Bailey returned last week with this solo single, but he won’t be getting to number one as it drops down one place!

39. The Untouchables – “Free Yourself”
The Untouchables secure a sixth week on the UK chart, only just, with their latest which is down eight places as they free themselves entirely.

38. Bryan Adams – “Heaven”
Phil Bailey’s new entry went down this week while the new entry from Bryan Adams from last week does nothing and sticks in the spot it came in.

37. Prince – “Paisley Park”
Our first new entry of this week comes from Prince with the follow up to his re-issue of “1999”. This track comes from his current album, “Around The World In A Day”.

36. Tears For Fears – “Everybody Wants To Rule The World”
Tears For Fears still want to rule the world and the charts. Eleven weeks on and they are still here but down eleven places.

35. Fine Young Cannibals – “Johnny Come Home”
Time for something new and it’s a debut single from British group Fine Young Cannibals as they land it in the top 40 upon release.

34. Gary Numan – “The Live” (EP)
Gary Numan’s live collection of songs went top thirty last week, but comes back down again with a fall of seven places.

33. Manchester United – “We All Follow Man United”
With Everton out, Manchester United are heading the same way with their FA Cup song, which descends nineteen places this week.

32. Simple Minds – “Don’t You (Forget About Me)”
Simple Minds get an eighth week on the chart with their biggest single so far. Their contribution to the film ‘The Breakfast Club’ falls nine.

31. Freddie Mercury – “I Was Born To Love You”
And Queen’s Freddie Mercury drops thirteen places with his latest solo single. His album “Mr. Bad Guy” was released in April.

30. The Power Station – “Get It On”
Pop supergroup The Power Station do anything but get it on with the follow up to their first hit, as it falls eight places.

29. Sister Sledge – “Frankie”
We welcome Sister Sledge back to the UK top 40 with a brand new song and a new entry. This is their first since the remixes of their earlier hits last year.

28. The Style Council – “Walls Come Tumbling Down”
The Style Council come tumbling down twelve places and out of the top twenty with the first single from their new album.

27. OMD – “So In Love”
While OMD just go up one on this week’s chart with their new single. It’s their tenth single to make the top 40 out of sixteen released.

26. Loose Ends – “Magic Touch”
Loose Ends lose their magic touch and depart the top twenty with their second hit of this year, which goes down eleven places.

25. Madonna – “Crazy For You”
Madonna is back. After a few weeks away since she was a “Material Girl”, she’s “Crazy For You” now with a ballad that also features in a new film called ‘Vision Quest’.

24. Skipworth and Turner – “Thinking About Your Love”
Skipworth and Turner pause for some more thinking as their current release is a non-mover in the position it reached last week.

23. David Bowie – “Loving The Alien”
David Bowie should have plenty of experience with aliens from his exploits in the 60’s and 70’s. He’s back with his second single of 1985.

22. Kool and The Gang – “Cherish”
It’s been a good week for Kool and The Gang as their latest rises fifteen places from its entry position seven days ago.

21. Propoganda – “Duel”
Also getting a climb of fifteen are German producers Propoganda, which makes this their highest position yet here in the UK.

20. Steve Arrington – “Feels So Real”
Steve Arrington’s biggest solo hit here in the UK drops nine places after six weeks in the upper half of the UK singles chart.

19. Five Star – “All Fall Down”
Good news though for Five Star as their chart rebound of last week does even better seven days on and flies into the top twenty with a climb of eleven places.

18. Depeche Mode – “Shake The Disease”
There’s also good news for Depeche Mode. They’ve been on hold outside the top twenty for the past two weeks but make a move into it and up three places.

17. Phyllis Nelson – “Move Closer”
Phyllis Nelson also moves this week but it’s down eleven places with her former one week chart topper and out of the top ten.

16. Mai Tai – “History”
There’s more good news for Mai Tai this week. They were the highest new entry on last week’s chart and become the highest climber a week later with a leap of sixteen places.

15. Bronski Beat and Marc Almond – “I Feel Love”
Bronski Beat and Marc Almond’s version of the Donna Summer hit is one of a few that are departing the top ten this week, They go down eight places.

14. Stephen ‘Tin Tin’ Duffy – “Icing On The Cake”
Stephen ‘Tin Tin’ Duffy‘s pumps his icing a little bit more this week as he climbs six places with the follow up to “Kiss Me”.

13. Bryan Ferry – “Slave To Love”
After just one week in, Bryan Ferry’s latest solo single slips out of the top ten and down three places. His new album is called “Boys And Girls” and it’s out tomorrow!

12. Go West – “Call Me”
Go West go a little bit higher with their second single, which goes up just one place, still aiming for a second top ten hit…

11. DeBarge – “Rhythm Of The Night”
After a return to the top five lats week, DeBarge take their debut UK chart hit down and out of the top ten altogether with a fall of six places.

10. Scritti Politti – “The Word Girl”
Scritti Politti get their very first top ten hit this week as their latest climbs five places, a month into it’s chart run.

9. Billy Ocean – “Suddenly”
Coming back to the top ten is our very own Billy Ocean with last week’s highest climber, which goes up ten places one week on.

8. Katrina and The Waves – “Walking On Sunshine”
Katrina and The Waves continue to walk on sunshine with their very first UK hit single, which is up just one place this week.

7. Jimmy Nail – “Love Don’t Live Here Anymore”
Jimmy Nail doesn’t live in the top three anymore with his cover of the Rose Royce song, which drops back four places.

6. Animotion – “Obsession”
American group Animotion have taking this single top ten in their home country and they’ve done it here now as it climbs six places.

5. Gary Moore and Phil Lynott – “Out In The Fields”
Gary Moore and Phil Lynott are still going strong out in the fields as this week they go up three places and into the top five.

4. The Crowd – “You’ll Never Walk Alone”
This week’s highest new entry comes from a put-to supergroup of Paul McCartney and friends following the Bradford football ground fire. They have recorded an old showtune from 1945 that was made famous by Gerry and The Pacemakers in 1963 in support of those who died.

3. Marillion – “Kayleigh”
Rock band Marillion take their very first top ten hit even higher and they move into the top three, up one more place.

2. Duran Duran – “A View To A Kill”
While Duran Duran have to settle for a third week at number two with their Bond theme, which is still the best performing of all the 007 title songs.

1. Paul Hardcastle – “19”
Which means for a fifth week running, Paul Hardcastle stays at number one with his best seller of the year so far. Can her make it to six, or will Marillion, The Crowd or Gary and Phil put a stop to that? There’s only one way to find out…
