UK Top 40 Singles Chart for 9th June 1985

So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Richard Skinner broadcast from 5pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales.

This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week there were five new entrys, fourteen climbers and two non-movers! And it was announced like this…

40. The Power Station – “Get It On”
The Power Station get it on for another week in the top 40. Their second single slumps ten places with just five weeks on this time.

39. Gary Numan – “The Live EP”
Gary Numan’s live collection of songs survives a fourth week on as he drops five places. Gary is putting the finishing touches to a new album at present.

38. Simple Minds – “Don’t You (Forget About Me)”
Simple Minds register a ninth week on the chart with their biggest hit yet and it goes down six places, keeping them in the breakfast club just a little while longer(!)

37. China Crisis – “King In A Catholic Style”
Out first new entry comes from China Crisis with the follow up to their recent top twenty hit, “Black Man Ray”. This is also the second single to come from their new album, “Flaunt The Imperfection”.

36. Freddie Mercury – “I Was Born To Love You”
Freddie Mercury gets a seventh week on the chart with his latest solo single, which slips just five places this week.

35. Loose Ends – “Magic Touch”
While Loose Ends fall nine places with their second chart hit, which has had the magic touch for six weeks, so far…

34. Phil Bailey – “Walking On The Chinese Wall”
There is good news for former chart topper Phil Bailey. His solo follow up to “Easy Lover” went down in its second week but climbs a healthy six places a week later.

33. Steve Arrington – “Feel So Real”
A drop of thirteen places probably doesn’t feel so real for Steve Arrington, but that’s what his biggest solo hit does this week.

32. Sting – “If You Love Somebody, Set Them Free”
Sting returns to the chart this week, like Freddie, on his own and with a new entry which is also the lead single from what will be his debut solo album that is coming out in a few weeks time.

31. Skipworth and Turner – “Thinking About Your Love”
Skipworth and Turner thought about it last week and the previous week in the same spot, but decide that’s enough and go down seven places.

30. Harold Faltermeyer – “Axel F”
You’ve heard from Glenn Frey earlier this year with a track from the ‘Beverly Hills Cop‘ film. Now here’s another one, this time an instrumental from the film’s composer, Harold Faltermeyer.

29. Depeche Mode – “Shake The Disease”
Depeche Mode moved into the top twenty last week with this single, but seven days later they drop out and down eleven places with it.

28. OMD – “So In Love”
While OMD went up one place last week with their latest and come back down one, only to end up where they were two weeks ago!

27. Bronski Beat and Marc Almond – “I Feel Love”
Bronski Beat and Marc Almond still feel Donna Summer’s love nine weeks on with their cover of her 1977 Disco odyssey and it goes down twelve places.

26. Bryan Ferry – “Slave To Love”
There are a number of former top twenty hits leaving that half of the chart this week and Bryan Ferry is one of them, he’s down thirteen places.

25. Phyllis Nelson – “Move Closer”
The former number one from Phyllis Nelson is also down and out, three months since she came onto the top 40, her first hit falls eight places.

24. Prince – “Paisley Park”
Going the other way is one of last week’s new entries, this one is from Prince and he goes up thirteen places with the latest single from his current album.

23. Bruce Springsteen – “Born In The USA”
Have asked you to “Cover Me” and then “Dancing In The Dark“, Mr. Bruce Springsteen returns with a new entry just to tell us he was born in the USA!

22. DeBarge – “Rhythm Of The Night”
DeBarge’s rhythm beats a little less loudly as their very first UK chart hit single leaves the upper half and down eleven places.

21. Propoganda – “Duel”
Propoganda’s second UK top 40 hit is “Duel” and it’s a duel week in the same position for it as they are non-movers just outside the top twenty for a second week running.

20. Marti Webb – “Ben”
It’s been five years since Marti Webb was last in the top 40 but she’s back with a cover of Michael Jackson’s song from 1971, which is also this week’s highest new entry!

19. David Bowie – “Loving The Alien”
David Bowie loves his alien a little bit more this week as he takes it into the top twenty, up four places in his second week.

18. Jimmy Nail – “Love Don’t Live Here Anymore”
Going the other way is actor Jimmy Nail with his debut chart hit, a cover of Rose Royce’s 1977 hit, which is down eleven places.

17. Go West – “Call Me”
Sadly Go West‘s second single misses out of a top ten position as this week it falls back five places after five weeks of climbing.

16. Fine Young Cannibals – “Johnny Come Home”
The Fine Young Cannibals landed their very first hit single on the chart last week and really make an impression as it shoots up nineteen places to be this week’s highest climber!

15. Five Star – “All Fall Down”
Five Star‘s debut hit single is also making stronger moves, this week it reaches a new high and climbs four places.

14. Stephen ‘Tin Tin’ Duffy – “Icing On The Cake”
The icing on the cake for Stephen ‘Tin Tin’ Duffy would be another top ten hit. He won’t do that this week as it’s a non-mover.

13. Kool and The Gang – “Cherish”
Making their return to the upper half of the UK chart this week are Kool and The Gang with their latest, which climbs nine places.

12. Katrina and The Waves – “Walking On Sunshine”
Sadly for Katrina and The Waves the only walking the do is going downwards as their very first UK chart hit leaves the top ten with a fall of four places.

11. Sister Sledge – “Frankie”
The new single from Sister Sledge enjoys a very healthy second week, not as much as the Fine Young Cannibals, but still a respectable eighteen places.

10. Mai Tai – “History”
Mai Tai were last week’s highest climbers having been the highest new entry the previous week. Another seven days on sees them do none of those but it does find them in the top ten, up six places.

9. Madonna – “Crazy For You”
Madonna comes back to the top ten here for the third time this year. Her new entry from last week goes up sixteen places.

8. Scritti Politti – “The Word Girl”
Scritti Politti continue to speak to the word girl with their very first top ten hit, which is two places higher than it was.

7. Gary Moore and Phil Lynott – “Out In The Fields”
Gary Moore and Phil Lynott have finished being in the fields and are heading home as their duet drops back two places.

6. Duran Duran – “A View To A Kill”
Duran Duran have been propping up the number one for the last three weeks with their Bond theme, which falls four places this week.

5. Animotion – “Obsession”
While American group Animotion move into the UK top five with their very first chart hit, moving up one place to do so.

4. Billy Ocean – “Suddenly”
Also returning to the top five and for the first time this year is Billy Ocean with his latest, which climbs five places.

3. Paul Hardcastle – “19”
It’s all change at the top as the former number one for the past four weeks from Paul Hardcastle drops two places!

2. Marillion – “Kayleigh”
Edging just a bit closer to the top are Marillion with their biggest hit single to date. They go up one more spot with just one more needed to claim that prize.

1. The Crowd – “You’ll Never Walk Alone”
So last week’s highest new entry raising funds for the Bradford football stadium fire climbs three places to become this week’s biggest seller of all. Can they stay at the top for a second, or will Marillion, Billy or Animotion make it a one week chart topper? There’s only one way to find out…
