UK Top 40 Singles Chart for 16th June 1985
So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Richard Skinner broadcast from 5pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases. This week there were six new entrys, twelve climbers and three non-movers! And it was announced like this…
40. Skipworth and Turner – “Thinking About Your Love” Skipworth and Turner get to think about your love another week as their pairing spends and eighth week in the top 40, but down nine places.
39. Conway Brothers – “Turn It Up” American family the Conway Brothers consists of Fred, Hiawatha, Huston and James Conway. They formed in 1982 and this is their third single release, which also becomes their very first UK chart entry.
38. The Redskins – “(Burn It Up) Bring It Down” While The Redskins last charted back in 1983 with “Lean On Me”, which they took to number three. This is their second to enter the top 40, so let’s see how far they go with it.
37. The Damned – “The Shadow Of Love” Coming back for a second shot in 1985 are The Damned with this new entry, which is the follow up to “Grimly Fiendish”.
36. Phil Bailey – “Walking On The Chinese Wall” Phil Bailey walked higher on the Chinese wall last week with his solo effort, but comes back down again, two places, seven days later.
35. Bronski Beat and Marc Almond – “I Feel Love” Bronski Beat and Marc Almond notch up a tenth week on the chart with this version of the Donna Summer classic, which is down eight places.
34. Bryan Ferry – “Slave To Love” Bryan Ferry slaves away for a seventh week with this latest solo single, which remains in the top 40 and also down eight.
33. OMD – “So In Love” OMD fall five places with their latest single, which is also their fifth week in the top 40 with their highest charting hit since “Tesla Girls”.
32. Elton John and Millie Jackson – “Act Of War” Elton John and Millie Jackson team up for this new entry, which actually gives Millie her very first UK top 40 debut having released songs since 1971!
31. Depeche Mode – “Shake The Disease” Depeche Mode shake their disease and also shake the top thirty this week as they drop just two places and out with their latest.
30. Paul Young – “Tomb Of Memories” Paul Young gets a new entry this week with the latest single from his album which follows “Everytime You Go Away”, his big hit from back in February/March.
29. Phyllis Nelson – “Move Closer” Former chart topper Phyllis Nelson is still kicking about, now with three months on the UK top 40 with this song and down just four places.
28. Sting – “If You Love Somebody Set Them Free” The debut solo single from Sting, free of The Police now, goes up four places in his second week with us, ahead of his very first album as a solo artist.
27. DeBarge – “Rhythm Of The Night” The rhythm of the night still plays loudly for DeBarge, like Phyllis, also with three months on the UK chart and down five this week.
26. China Crisis – “King In A Catholic Style” The second chart hit from China Crisis this year goes up eleven places in their second week, aiming for a second top twenty hit…
25. Jimmy Nail – “Love Don’t Love Here Anymore” Jimmy Nail doesn’t live in the top twenty anymore with his debut single and cover of the Rose Royce hit which falls seven places.
24. Tears For Fears – “Head Over Heels” Tears For Fears will be head over heels when they learn they are this week’s highest new entry with the follow up to “Everybody Wants To Rule The World”!
23. Go West – “Call Me” While Go West depart the upper half of the chart with their second release, which falls six places, seven weeks in.
22. Prince – “Paisley Park” Prince goes up two this week with his latest. The song is the second to come from his seventh studio album, “Around the World In A Day”.
21. Propoganda – “Duel” Poor Propoganda. They were frozen as a non-mover last week just outside the top twenty and they have to suffer the same ordeal again for a third week running!
20. Stephen ‘Tin Tin’ Duffy – “Icing On The Cake” …that happened to Stephen ‘Tin Tin’ Duffy last week, but unlike Propoganda, he falls six places with his non-mover.
19. David Bowie – “Loving The Alien” Speaking of non-movers and keeping with the theme, David Bowie gets one this week with his latest single, which pauses, aliens and all int he same spot!
18. Five Star – “All Fall Down” Five Star have been down before and gone up again with their very first top 40 entry. It could so again, but for now they are down three places.
17. Katrina and The Waves – “Walking On Sunshine” Down five are Katrina and The Waves with their debut chart hit also, which has been about for eight weeks now, the same amount of time as Five Star.
16. Gary Moore and Phil Lynott – “Out In The Fields” Not only are they out in the fields, but Gary Moore and Phil Lynott are out of the top ten this week and down nine places.
15. Fine Young Cannibals – “Johnny Come Home” Last week’s highest climber saw the Fine Young Cannibals blast into the top twenty for the very first time. They take a more leisurely climb of one, seven days later.
14. Paul Hardcastle – “19” Taking a big hit and a big fall is the years’ biggest seller so far is the former number one from Paul Hardcastle, who slides eleven places from the top three!
13. Bruce Springsteen – “Born In The USA” The latest from Bruce Springsteen enjoys a very good week two here in the UK as his homegrown anthem rockets ten places.
12. Marti Webb – “Ben” Meanwhile, last week’s highest new entry from Marti Webb goes up eight places. The original by a 12 year old Michael Jackson got to No.7 back in 1972.
11. Duran Duran – “A View To A Kill” Just slipping out of the top ten this week are Duran Duran with their 007 title song, which is the biggest yet from the series, and down five places.
10. Harold Faltermeyer – “Axel F” Keeping with the movies, this week’s highest climber of twenty places comes from composer Harold Faltermeyer with his contribution to the film ‘Beverly Hills Cop’.
9. Mai Tai – “History” Dutch group Mai Tai continue their climb of the UK singles chart, this week going up one place and now level with “Body And Soul” from last year!
8. Animotion – “Obsession” Animotion have been obsessed with getting as far as they can int he UK chart with their first hit, but after eight weeks, they slip back three places.
7. Kool and The Gang – “Cherish” This is something for Kool and The Gang the cherish. Their latest goes up seven places to put the back in the UK top ten for the first time since “(When You Say You Love Somebody) In The Heart”.
6. Scritti Politti – “The Word Girl” Scritti Politti continue to progress with the word girl, this week going up two places, having joined the chart seven weeks ago.
5. Billy Ocean – “Suddenly” Billy Ocean moved into the top five last week and there he stays but down one place with his highest charting since “Caribbean Queen”.
4. Marillion – “Kayleigh” Marillion nearly made it to the top with this one, but having been the second best seller last week, they fall two places and away from the top spot.
3. Madonna – “Crazy For You” Six places takes Madonna back to the number three spot, again for the third time here in the UK! Can she ever break out and get a bigger hit…?
2. Sister Sledge – “Frankie” It’s been another good week for Sister Sledge with their brand new one, which goes up nine places to make this their highest chart placing here in the UK yet!
1. The Crowd – “You’ll Never Walk Alone” For the second week running its the charity single in aid of the Bradford football ground fire that top them all. Can they make it a third, or will Sister Sledge or Madonna claim their very first number one? There’s only one way to find out…
