UK Top 40 Singles Chart for 30th June 1985

So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Richard Skinner broadcast from 5pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales.

This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week there were four new entrys, sixteen climbers and one non-mover! And it was announced like this…

40. Stephen ‘Tin Tin’ Duffy – “Icing On The Cake”
The icing on the cake this week for Stephen ‘Tin Tin’ Duffy is that his latest charts for two months, but goes down thirteen places.

39. Jaki Graham – “Round And Around”
Jaki Graham comes back for our firast new entry this week and this time she’s on her own for her first solo top 40 showing.

38. Elton John and Millie Jackson – “Act Of War”
since they arrived two weeks ago, Elton John and Millie Jackson have not been able to move from the same chart position, but they have now and it’s down six places.

37. Eurythmics – “There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart)”
The Eurythmics return with a second taster of their brand new album and follow “Would I Lie To You?” with this new entry.

36. Katrina and The Waves – “Walking On Sunshine”
As the sun sets on Katrina and The Waves’ first time on the chart, they amass nine weeks with this song which goes down twelve places.

35. Gary Moore and Phil Lynott – “Out In The Fields”
Gary Moore and Phil Lynott come out of the top twenty this week as they drop fifteen places with their collaboration after six weeks there.

34. The Redskins – “(Burn It Up) Bring It Down”
While The Redskins slip back one place with their latest, this time with two 3’s in the chart peak and not one as they had done back in 1983.

33. Simply Red – “Money’s Too Tight To Mention”
There’s a chart debut next from British group Simply Red and this is also their debut single, which lands itself a top 40 placing having been on sale for a month now.

32. Five Star – “All Fall Down”
Five Star did that with this single eight weeks ago and they are just about still with us as all five of them fall down eleven places.

31. Sting – “If You Love Somebody Set Them Free”
Sting’s first solo single appears to have peaked as he drops back five places in his fifth week. His album, “The Dream Of The Blue Turtles”, came out two weeks ago.

30. The Cult – “She Sells Sanctuary”
Keeping with the top 40 debuts and The Cult did that last week with this track and in their second, they go up five places.

29. Propoganda – “Duel”
Propoganda take another small drop this week with their latest, which goes down four places. Their new album is called “A Secret Wish” and it’s out next month.

28. Glenn Frey – “Smuggler’s Blues”
Glenn Frey has the smugglers blues as the heat is on for another top twenty hit from him. A climb of ten places makes that more of a reality.

27. The Style Council – “Come To Milton Keynes”
This is as far as the new entry’s for this week goes and it’s The Style Council who once again bag that prize with the follow up to “Walls Come Tumbling Down”!

26. Opus – “Live Is Life”
Austrian band Opus arrived on the scene last week with their second single, which has already topped the chart in their home country, now they are on their way here with a solid climb of eleven places.

25. The Damned – “The Shadow Of Love”
The Damned continue their climb of the chart and move three places higher than they were last week with their second top thirty hit of this year.

24. Paul Hardcastle – “19”
The former number one from Paul Hardcastle leaves the top twenty as he falls eight this week in his tenth week on the top 40.

23. Duran Duran – “A View To A Kill”
Still one above him are Duran Duran with their James Bond song, eight weeks in and also down eight places this week.

22. The Conway Brothers – “Turn It Up”
The Conway Brothers continue to turn things up and this week they go up eight places with their first UK top 40 single.

21. Prince – “Paisley Park”
Prince spent a week in the Paisley park of the UK top twenty as he slips out and down three places with the second single to come from “Around The World In A Day”.

20. China Crisis – “King In A Catholic Style”
China Crisis are in a crisis this week as their return to the top twenty drops one place seven days after it arrived.

19. Dead Or Alive – “In Too Deep”
Coming back to the upper half of the chart for the third time this year are Dead Or Alive with their new entry from last week which goes up fifteen places.

18. Animotion – “Obsession”
Animotion go down five this week, their eighth in the top twenty here in the UK. The song comes from their self-titled debut album, which arrived last October.

17. Denise LaSalle – “My Toot Toot”
It’s been a very good week for Denise LaSalle as she scores her biggest UK single so far and this week’s highest climber of nineteen places!

16. Paul Young – “Tomb Of Memories”
That was Paul Young last week, the highest climber, but a week on and he can only manage one more spot up on where he was.

15. Scritti Politti – “The Word Girl”
Leaving the top ten this week are Scritti Politti, lead by the singer Green Gartside. They second top ten hit in a year falls five places.

14. Howard Jones – “Life In One Day”
Last week’s highest new entry came from Howard Jones and he powers into the upper half of the chart with a climb of eight, hoping for another top ten hit this time next week.

13. The Commentators – “N-n-nineteen (Not Out)”
Leaping over Howard is the comedian Rory Bremner with his take on the song at No.24 in a cricketing style! He goes up ten places.

12. Tears For Fears – “Head Over Heels”
Tears For Fears head up two this week as they edge closer to the top ten. This one seems less reluctant than their previous two to do so.

11. Fine Young Cannibals – “Johnny Come Home”
And taking their time in reaching the top ten are the Fine Young Cannibals, who go up another one place to sit just outside the big ten.

10. Marillion – “Kayleigh”
Marillion’s biggest hit single to date is still top ten after two months on the chart. This week it falls three places.

9. Mai Tai – “History”
Going back down one are Mai Tai with their highest charting here so far, and their second top ten hit in a row, which ends up where is was two weeks ago.

8. Bruce Springsteen – “Born In The USA”
Bruce Springsteen’s last singe missed the top ten, but not so the title track of his current album, which rises three places to give the man his second of this year.

7. Billy Ocean – “Suddenly”
Billy Ocean drops one spot this week with his latest, down from the top five the previous week and down one more again.

6. The Crowd – “You’ll Never Walk Alone”
The former number one from the artists all coming together to raise money for the Bradford football club fire goes down three this week.

5. Marti Webb – “Ben”
As Marti Webb moves into the top five with her cover of Michael Jackson’s “Ben”, which goes up four places and is now two places higher than the original achieved in 1972!

4. Kool and The Gang – “Cherish”
Kool and The Gang move up one more this week. The song is the third single to come from their current album called “Emergency”.

3. Madonna – “Crazy For You”
Dropping down one and back to where she was two weeks ago is Madonna with her highest charting single yet, which will make her crazy that she didn’t get her first number one.

2. Harold Faltermeyer – “Axel F”
Harold Faltermeyer goes up two this week with his instrumental contribution to the film ‘Beverly Hills Cop‘ that accompanies the central character of the film.

1. Sister Sledge – “Frankie”
So for a second week running it’s Sister Sledge that claim the biggest seller of all with their very first chart topper here in the UK. Can they make it three in a row, or will Harold Faltermeyer, Kool and The Gang or Marti Webb be remembered more? There’s only one way to find out…
