UK Top 40 Singles Chart for 7th July 1985

So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Richard Skinner broadcast from 5pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales.

This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week there were seven new entrys, thirteen climbers and seven non-movers! And it was announced like this…

40. B. B. & Q. Band – “Genie”
B. B. & Q. Band stands for the Brooklyn, Bronx, and Queens Band and they formed in 1979. To date the group have released three studio albums and a number of singles, but this is their first to make it onto the UK top 40.

39. Trans-X – “Living On Video”
There’s another top 40 debut next for Canadian group Trans-X, who released their first single in 1983. This is a remix of their second and it too makes the chart as a new entry.

38. Five Star – “All Fall Down”
Five Star have been about for nine weeks with their very first top 40 single, but they hope it will not be their last as it falls six places.

37. Animal Nightlife – “Love Is Just The Great Pretender”
Animal Nightlife make their second top 40 appearance with this new entry which follows on from last year’s “Mr. Solitaire”.

36. Feargal Sharkey – “Loving You”
Also coming back with the follow up to a single of last year is Feargal Sharkey. The former Undertones singer is putting the finishing touches to his debut solo album.

35. Russ Abbot – “All Night Holiday”
Comedian Russ Abbot shoots back into the top 40 with this new entry, the follow up to his first back in January. Can he take this one top ten…?

34. Steve Arrington – “Dancin’ Is The Key To Life”
…so says Steve Arrington with his new entry, which also follows up on his recent top five smash hit, “Feel So Real”.

33. The Cool Notes – “In Your Car”
The highest new entry of all this week comes from The Cool Notes, again with the follow up to an earlier hit this year. “Spend The Night” just stopped short of the top ten three months ago.

32. Prince – “Paisley Park”
Prince takes a stroll out of Paisley Park and he could be leaving the chart altogether next week as his latest goes down eleven places.

31. Paul Hardcastle – “19”
And after eleven weeks, the former number one from Paul Hardcastle could be on its way out with a drop of seven places.

30. China Crisis – “King In A Catholic Style”
China Crisis fall ten places and out of the top twenty this week with the follow up to “Black Man Ray”, with five weeks on so far.

29. Duran Duran – “A View To A Kill”
Roger Moore has seen his last mission as 007 this year and the title track of the film from Duran Duran has been the biggest Bond song yet. This week they fall six places.

28. Animotion – “Obsession”
There is still an obsession about Animotion‘s first UK chart hit. Nine weeks on for them too finds them down ten and out of the upper half of the chart.

27. Jaki Graham – “Round and Around”
The solo single from Jaki Graham moves in other directions as she climbs a healthy twelve places in her second week.

26. The Cult – “She Sells Sanctuary”
Also going up are The Cult, four places higher than their top 40 entry this time last week, with the re-issue of this single from last year.

25. The Damned – “The Shadow Of Love”
Not so lucky for The Damned this week as their latest freezes as a non-mover in the same spot. Now how grimly fiendish is that?(!)

24. Scritti Politti – “The Word Girl”
Falling nine this week are Scritti Politti with their biggest chart hit so far. The song comes from their new album, “Cupid & Psyche 85”.

23. The Style Council – “Come To Milton Keynes”
Last week’s highest new entry from The Style Council goes up four places. The track is the second from their new album, “Our Favourite Shop”.

22. Glenn Frey – “Smuggler’s Blues”
Glenn Frey goes up again this week, six places for him, with the follow up to “The Heat Is On” from the ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ film.

21. Simply Red – “Money’s Too Tight To Mention”
The debut single from Simply Red landed on the top 40 last week and they have a better second week as the song climbs twelve places.

20. Paul Young – “Tomb Of Memories”
Paul Young’s latest is sadly consigned to his tomb of memories as the song falls four places and back to where it was two weeks ago.

19. The Crowd – “You’ll Never Walk Alone”
The former number one in aid of the Bradford Football stadium disaster exits the top ten this week and down thirteen places.

18. The Conway Brothers – “Turn It Up”
The Conway Brothers continue to climb and they move into the UK top twenty in their fourth week going up four places as well!

17. Howard Jones – “Life In One Day”
The last two singles from Howard Jones have made the top ten, but it looks like the third won’t as it drops back three places.

16. The Commentators – “N-n-nineteen Not Out”
The Commentators, aka comedian Rory Bremner, also goes down three places with his take on the recent number one from Paul Hardcastle.

15. Opus – “Live Is Life”
Austrian band Opus power into the UK top twenty this week with their latest, which goes up eleven places, three weeks in.

14. Dead Or Alive – “In Too Deep”
Dead Or Alive go deeper and further with their latest, which climbs five places. Their last just stopped outside the top ten, so can this one go further…?

13. Marillion – “Kayleigh”
Leaving the top ten are Marillion with their biggest hit so far, which falls three places. The band released their latest album, “Misplaced Childhood”, two weeks ago.

12. Tears For Fears – “Head Over Heels”
There is no futher movement for the latest single from the Tears For Fears album “Songs From The Big Chair”, which is a non-mover this week.

11. Billy Ocean – “Suddenly”
And just slipping out of the top ten is Billy Ocean, down four with the title track of his latest album, which was released last year.

10. Eurythmics – “There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart)”
It’s been a storming weeks for the latest Eurythmics single, which flies up a whopping TWENTY SEVEN places to be this week’s highest climber by a mile!

9. Mai Tai – “History”
It’s not a bad week for Mai Tai, depending on how you look at it. This song fell last week but is a non-mover dropping no further.

8. Fine Young Cannibals – “Johnny Come Home”
The Fine Young Cannibals have done it! After five weeks on the chart with their debut single, the band move up three places and into the top ten!

7. Denise LaSalle – “My Toot Toot”
It’s another good week for last weeks highest climber from Denise LaSalle as she powers into the UK top ten, up ten places.

6. Marti Webb – “Ben”
Going down one and out of the top five is Marti Webb’s cover of Michael Jackson’s “Ben” but still making it higher than the original did.

5. Bruce Springsteen – “Born In The USA”
Meanwhile, Bruce Springsteen returns to the UK top five with the title track of his current album, which goes up three.

4. Kool and The Gang – “Cherish”
There is no change from hereonin as Kool and The Gang are non-movers this week with their highest charting song here for two years.

3. Madonna – “Crazy For You”
And that also goes for Madonna with a fourth week in the top three here but a non-mover having dropped down from second place this time last week.

2. Harold Faltermeyer – “Axel F”
The composer of the film ‘Beverly Hills Cop‘, Harold Faltermeyer is also a non-mover with his instrumental theme from the movie.

1. Sister Sledge – “Frankie”
So that means for a third week running, Sister Sledge are number one with their very first chart topper here in the UK. Can they make it a month on top, or will someone break out and stop them? There’s only one way to find out…
