So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Richard Skinner broadcast from 5pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases. This week there were five new entrys, thirteen climbers and three non-movers! And it was announced like this…
40. Five Star – “Let Me Be The One” It’s one out and one in for Five Star as they follow up “All Fall Down” with this track and get us started with this new entry.
39. Dire Straits – “Money For Nothing” Also back with a new entry are Dire Straits with the follow up to “So Far Away” and the second single from their brand new album, “Brothers In Arms”.
38. The Pointer Sisters – “Dare Me” The Pointer Sisters kick back with something new this week after their chart success last year, they have a new album on the way and this is the lead single from it.
37. Tina Turner – “We Don’t Need Another Hero” Tina Turner has something new with this new entry and also a starring role in the upcoming new ‘Mad Max’ film from which this comes from.
36. Paul Hardcastle – “19” Paul Hardcastle makes it three months in the top 40 with his former chart topper, which slips five places. But could this be his last…?
35. Animotion – “Obsession” Behind him and with ten weeks on the UK chart are American group Animotion with their first hit here, which falls seven places.
34. Billy Idol – “White Wedding” So this is where this weeks new intake finishes with Billy Idol bagging the highest of them all with a re-issue of a single that first came out in 1982.
33. Duran Duran – “A View To A Kill” Duran Duran‘s Bond theme racks up ten weeks on the chart as the biggest Bond song of them all. This week they are down four places.
32. Paul Young – “Tomb Of Memories” Paul Young’s latest will soon be a memory as he crashes out of the top twenty, down twelve places with the follow up to “Everytime You Go Away”.
31. Feargal Sharkey – “Loving You” Feargal Sharkey came onto the chart last week with this solo single and he climbs five places with it in his second.
30. The Crowd – “You’ll Never Walk Alone” The former number one from ‘The Crowd’ drops eleven this week. The song has been around for seven weeks raising money in the aftermath of the Bradford Football ground fire.
29. The Style Council – “Come To Milton Keynes” The Style Council fall six places, which would suggest that not everyone from Milton Keynes was impressed with this song or bought it!
28. Animal Nightlife – “Love Is Just The Great Pretender” All of last week’s new entries are going up this week and Animal Nightlife are one of them. They move nine places higher.
27. The Damned – “The Shadow Of Love” Meanwhile, The Damned go down two places having been non-movers for the last two weeks. This song has peaked in the same spot as their last one did.
26. Glenn Frey – “Smugglers Blues” Glenn Frey has the blues this week as the follow up to his top twenty hit earlier this year falls back four places.
25. Russ Abbot – “All Night Holiday” Another of last weeks new intake was comedian Russ Abbot with the follow up to “Atmosphere”, which climbs ten places.
24. The Commentators – “N-n-nineteen (Not Out)” Keeping with the comedy and impressionist Rory Bremner falls eight places with his take on the man at No.36 with the voices of the cricket commentators.
23. Steve Arrington – “Dancin’ Is The Key Of Life” Steve Arrington joined us again last week with this new single, which goes up eleven places in week two, aiming for another top ten hit…
22. Howard Jones – “Life In One Day” The latest cut from Howard Jones‘s new album, “Dream Into Action”, leaves the upper half of the chart as he falls five places.
21. Marillion – “Kayleigh” And just leaving the top twenty are Marillion with their big smash hit, ten weeks on now, but down eight places and out.
20. Billy Ocean – “Suddenly” There are some big movers in the top twenty this week but Billy Ocean isn’t one of them. His ninth week finds him down nine places.
19. The Cult – “She Sells Sanctuary” Coming into the upper half of the chart for the very first time are The Cult as their re-released earlier single climbs seven places.
18. Trans-X – “Living On Video” The biggest of the movers begins with the biggest of them all as Trans-X take a massive leap of twenty one places in their second week!
17. Mai Tai – “History” Having been in the top ten for a month, Mai Tai become history themselves and fall eight places with their biggest chart hit here.
16. Dead Or Alive – “In Too Deep” Sadly for Dead Or Alive they go no deeper than they achieved this time last week and drop back two places with their latest.
15. The Cool Notes – “In Your Car” Powering back into the top twenty is last week’s highest new entry from The Cool Notes, as they speed back for the second time this year with a climb of eighteen.
14. Tears For Fears – “Head Over Heels” And having achieved two top ten hits this year, the latest from Tears For Fears misses out and drops down two places.
13. Simply Red – “Money’s Too Tight To Mention” The debut single from Simply Red continues to earn high marks and week three finds them entering the top twenty with a climb of eight places.
12. Jaki Graham – “Round And Around” It’s been another good week for Jaki Graham too as she climbs fifteen places with the follow up to “Could It be I’m Falling In Love”.
11. The Conway Brothers – “Turn It Up” And The Conway Brothers continue to turn things up here in the UK as they get themselves within reach of the UK top ten with a climb of seven.
10. Marti Webb – “Ben” Marti Webb gets another week in the top ten with her cover of Michael Jackson’s number, which is down four places this week.
9. Fine Young Cannibals – “Johnny Come Home” Having finally made it to the top ten last week, the Fine Young Cannibals drop back one place with their very first top 40 charting single.
8. Opus – “Live Is Life” Austrian band Opus make their UK top ten debut this week as they climb seven places with their first chart topper in their home country.
7. Bruce Springsteen – “Born In The USA” Bruce Springsteen was indeed born the USA, in Long Branch, New Jersey to be precise. His ode to his home country departs the UK top five this week, down two places.
6. Denise LaSalle – “My Toot Toot” Former highest climber Denise LaSalle continues to ring her toot toot and goes up one place with her very first hit here.
5. Madonna – “Crazy For You” Madonna has been in the top five for six weeks with her highest charting single yet. Week seven finds her two places down on where she was before.
4. Kool and The Gang – “Cherish” There’s no change for a third week running for Kool and The Gang‘s latest as they keep the same chart position once more.
3. Eurythmics – “There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart)” Last week’s highest climber from the Eurythmics goes up seven a week on and they could be eyeing up their first number one this time next week…
2. Harold Faltermeyer – “Axel F” Meanwhile, there’s still no change in second place for Harold Faltermeyer as his instrumental piece form the film ‘Beverly Hills Cop‘ stays the same for a third week.
1. Sister Sledge – “Frankie” Which means for a fourth week running, there’s no change at the top as Sister Sledge remain the biggest selling single of all. Can they go to a fifth, or will the Eurythmics or someone else move in? There’s only one way to find out…
