UK Top 40 Singles Chart for 11th August 1985

So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Richard Skinner broadcast from 5pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales.

This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week there were five new entrys, twelve climbers and three non-movers! And it was announced like this…

40. Total Contrast – “Takes A Little Time”
We start this week with a chart debut from British duo Total Contrast, who are Robin Achampong and Delroy Murray. This is their fifth release but the first to make it this far.

39. King – “Alone Without You”
No strangers to the top 40 this year are King and they get a new entry their third of 1985 and follows up from “Won’t You Hold My Hand Now?”.

38. Dio – “Rock’N’Roll Children”
The new entries keep coming and next up it’s American band Dio who make a chart return with a brand new song that will feature on their upcoming third studio album.

37. Simply Red – “Money’s Too Tight To Mention”
It looks like this could be it for now for Simply Red as their debut single prepares to leave us and falls thirteen places.

36. Bruce Springsteen – “Born In The USA”
The first of Bruce Springsteen’s two singles on the chart is also on its way out and drops seven places, ten weeks after arrival.

35. OMD – “Secret”
There’s some good news for OMD this week, who went down last week but go back up again by two places, tell us the secret boys…?!

34. Feargal Sharkey – “Loving You”
Time is up for Feargal Sharkey. After six weeks on the climb, he goes down eight places with the follow up to “Listen To Your Father”.

33. Baltimora – “Tarzan Boy”
Time for some fun and this new entry comes from Italian group Baltimora, who are Jimmy McShane, Maurizio Bassi and Naimy Hackett and this is their debut single!

32. The Cool Notes – “In Your Car”
The Cool Notes leave the upper half of the chart this week, down twelve places with the follow up to “Spend The Night”.

31. The Pointer Sisters – “Dare Me”
While The Pointer Sisters go down nine this week. Their new album, “Contact”, was released last month and this is the lead single.

30. Denise LaSalle – “My Toot Toot”
Denise LaSalle falls twelve places this week with her very first UK top 40 charting single, which comes from her new album called “Love Talkin'”.

29. Go West – “Goodbye Girl”
Richard and Peter of Go West go up just one place this week with the follow up to their two previous top twenty charting singles.

28. Phil Collins – “Take Me Home”
While there is no move at all for Phil Collins’ latest, which is the third to come from his latest album, “No Jacket Required”.

27. D Train – “You’re The One For Me”
D Train departed this time last week and their journey moves on as they go up thirteen places into the UK top thirty.

26. Lisa Lisa and The Cult Jam – “I Wonder If I Take You Home”
And it’s also been a good week for Lisa Lisa and The Cult Jam with their first UK top 40 entry and they too go up thirteen places.

25. Prince – “Raspberry Beret”
Prince is going up again, just two for him this week with the follow up to “Paisley Park”. This song has hit No.2 in the US.

24. The Cult – “She Sells Sanctuary”
The Cult have been top twenty for four weeks with their very first top 40 hit but they are no longer and fall five places.

23. Gary Moore – “Empty Rooms”
Which is where Gary Moore would like to be but he’s a non-mover this week with the new version of this song which comes from his “Victims Of The Future” album.

22. Five Star – “Let Me Be The One”
This is Five Star‘s fifth week on the top 40 with this song and they go down four places and out of the upper half of the top 40.

21. Jaki Graham – “Round And Around”
And just slipping out is Jaki Graham with her second hit of this year, which falls seven places in its eighth week.

20. Bruce Springsteen – “Glory Days”
Bruce Springsteen is back with hi second chart entry and he’s not doing too well with his latest, which goes down three places.

19. Madonna – Crazy For You”
Eleven weeks on and Madonna is still top twenty with the ‘most mature’ of her three singles. Her big ballad is down four this week.

18. Trans-X – “Living On Video”
The Trans-X boys go down five this week with their reworked single, which comes from their reissued debut album, out now.

17. Sister Sledge – “Frankie”
The former number one from Sister Sledge departs the top ten this week, down seven places, having been there for eleven weeks.

16. Harold Faltermeyer – “Axel F”
Sister Sledge overtake the song that was number two for three weeks from Harold Faltermeyer as he drops just four places with his theme from the ‘Beverly Hills Cop‘ film.

15. The Cure – “In Between Days”
Going up one more place this week are The Cure with their brand new single. The band’s new album is out in two weeks time.

14. Kool and The Gang – “Cherish”
Notching up fourteen weeks on the chart now are Kool and The Gang with their biggest hit since “Joanna”, three years ago.

13. Amazulu – “Excitable”
The first single from Amazulu makes its way to the top twenty this week as they go up twelve places in their third week.

12. Opus – “Live Is Life”
While Austrian band Opus fall two and out of the top ten with their first big hit single here, now ten weeks on the chart.

11. Princess – “Say I’m Your Number One”
We have a Prince and a King on the chart and we also now have a Princess. Desiree Heslop was last week’s highest new entry with her debut single and she shoots up twenty places with it in her second!

10. Nik Kershaw – “Don Quixote”
Nik Kershaw fulfills his ambition to have three top ten singles from his latest album as the third goes up one place this week.

9. Kate Bush – “Running Up That Hill”
This week’s highest new entry sees the return of Kate Bush to the chart with brand new music and it puts her back in the top ten for the first time in six years.

8. The Cars – “Drive”
Just above Kate is this week’s highest climber from The Cars, who drive forward twenty four places and into the UK top ten for the first time in eight years.

7. Billy Idol – “White Wedding”
Slipping one place this week is Billy Idol with his very first top ten hit. It comes from a new remix album called “Vital Idol”.

6. Eurythmics – “There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart)”
The former number one from the Eurythmics falls four this week and out of the top five. Dave and Annie’s latest album is called “Be Yourself Tonight”.

5. Dire Straits – “Money For Nothing”
Having registered their first top five hit for four years last week, Dire Straits drop back one place with it seven days on.

4. Tina Turner – “We Don’t Need Another Hero”
Also down one is Tina Turner with her theme from the film ‘Mad Max 3’, which had been a non-mover for the past two weeks.

3. UB40 and Chrissie Hynde – “I Got You Babe”
Moving into third place with a climb of four are UB40 and Chrissie Hynde with their version of Sonny and Cher’s 1965 chart topper. Is this going the same way…?

2. Madonna – “Holiday”
Last week’s highest climber from Madonna goes up three places to put her in second place and a challenge for the top spot this time next week…

1. Madonna – “Into The Groove”
…from herself! Yes, Madonna is there for a third week at the top with her first number one, but could her second be on the way next week, or will UB40 and Chrissie topple even her? There’s only one way to find out…
