UK Top 40 Singles Chart for 18th August 1985

So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Richard Skinner broadcast from 5pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales.

This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week there were three new entrys, thirteen climbers and one non-mover! And it was announced like this…

40. Dan Hartman – “I Can Dream About You”
We welcome Dan Hartman back to the UK top 40 this week with our first new entry. This is a re-issue of a track he brought out last year and the title track of his brand new album.

39. OMD – “Secret”
OMD go up and down. Six weeks now of yoyo-ing. This week finds them on the way down, four places lower than they were.

38. The Pointer Sisters – “Dare Me”
The Pointer Sisters are going down again, this week seven places in their sixth week on the chart with their latest new song.

37. Denise LaSalle – “My Toot Toot”
Denise LaSalle gets to honk her toot toot for another week as she also falls seven places with her very first chart hit here.

36. Mai Tai – “Body And Soul”
Mai Tai are certainly not history and make a return with the follow up to that song with this new entry. Can they take it top ten again?

35. The Cool Notes – “In Your Car”
The Cool Notes get to drive or be a passenger in your car for another week, Down three for them in their seventh week on the top 40.

34. Marc Almond – “Stories Of Johnny”
Only three new ones this week and this is the highest of them all and it comes from Soft Cell’s Marc Almond with his very first solo top 40 chart entry!

33. Bruce Springsteen – “Glory Days”
Bruce Springsteen is relegated to just one song on the chart this week and that drops thirteen places and out of the top twenty.

32. Dio – “Rock’N’Roll Children”
American rock band Dio returned to the top 40 last week with this new track and they take it up six places in week two.

31. The Cult – “She Sells Sanctuary”
Meanwhile, British band The Cult are still about with their re-issued single, which finally made the top 40. This weeks it’s down seven places.

30. Jaki Graham – “Round And Around”
Jaki Graham has been going round and around for nine weeks now. She’s still about and down nine places with her first solo chart hit.

29. Gary Moore – “Empty Rooms”
Having been a non-mover last week, Gary Moore leaves his empty room for something darker as the song falls six places.

28. Trans-X – “Living On Video”
Trans-X depart the top twenty, down ten places in their tenth week on the top 40 with this track, a former highest climber.

27. Five Star – “Let Me Be The One”
Unlike their last single, there’s no going back for Five Star as they go down five places with their second top 40 hit.

26. Prince – “Raspberry Beret”
Sinking one place is Prince with the latest offering from his “Around The World In A Day”, which misses the top twenty on this occasion.

25. Go West – “Goodbye Girl”
Go West are taking some more small steps in the right direction this week, up four with the follow up to two top twenty hits.

24. Madonna – “Crazy For You”
Three months on and the first of Madonna‘s three singles on the chart leaves the top twenty, down five places. Will she still be number one…?

23. Harold Faltermeyer – “Axel F”
It’s now sixteen weeks on the chart for Harold Faltermeyer with his theme from ‘Beverly Hills Cop‘ and he too leaves the upper half of the chart, down seven.

22. Total Contrast – “Takes A Little Time”
British duo Total Contrast turned up last week with this single, their first to make to the top 40 and they mean business as it goes up eighteen places!

21. Sister Sledge – “Frankie”
The former number one from Sister Sledge slips out of the top twenty, down four places in its fourteenth week on the chart.

20. The Cure – “In Between Days”
Having made a majestic return to the top twenty three weeks ago, the brand new single from The Cure descends five places.

19. Phil Collins – “Take Me Home”
There is better news for Phil Collins. He was a non-mover with his latest but makes a sudden burst into life again and goes up nine!

18. Kool and The Gang – “Cherish”
Kool and The Gang are still here with this long serving hit song and they are still top twenty with it but down four places.

17. D Train – “You’re The One For Me”
D Train arrive in the upper half of the chart this week. Week three finds them going up ten places with the remix of their debut hit.

16. Opus – “Live Is Life”
There’s life in Opus still. Three months on the chart and they remain top twenty and down four places with their energising anthem.

15. Lisa Lisa and The Cult Jam – “I Wonder If I Take You Home”
Making their debut in the UK top twenty are Lisa Lisa and The Cult Jam along with Full Force, who all go up eleven places.

14. Nik Kershaw – “Don Quixote”
But just one week in the top ten for Nik Kershaw with his latest, and there’s no riddle about that. as he comes right out again and down four places.

13. King – “Alone Without You”
You’ve heard from Prince now here are King with their latest which claims full majesty with this majestic leap of twenty six places, which is this week’s highest!

12. Amazulu – “Excitable”
Amazulu go up just one this week with their very first chart hit single, three years after they released their first.

11. Baltimora – “Tarzan Boy”
The novel new hit from Italian group Baltimora has been making waves across the channel and now it’s doing the same here as they shoot up twenty two places in week two.

10. Princess – “Say I’m Your Number One”
Our chart royal family includes a Princess this week and her debut single goes up one place to take her into the top ten.

9. Eurythmics – “There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart)”
The former number one from the Eurythmics has been about for two whole months now and they remain top ten also but down two places.

8. Billy Idol – “White Wedding”
Down one this week is the re-issue of Billy Idol’s 1982 single, which failed to chart here first time around but does much better the second.

7. Tina Turner – “We Don’t Need Another Hero”
Down three this week is Tina Turner and her first big hit here of 1985. The film ‘Mad Max 3’ stars Mel Gibson and the lady herself!

6. Dire Straits – “Money For Nothing”
The latest hit from Dire Straits drops one place and out of the top five this week. The song comes from their current album, “Brothers In Arms”.

5. The Cars – “Drive”
Moving into the top five are last week’s highest climbers, The Cars, as the ‘drive’ further ahead and up three places.

4. Kate Bush – “Running Up That Hill”
Meanwhile, Kate Bush has no problems running up that hill. Her highest new entry of last week is up five places and into the top five.

3. Madonna – “Holiday”
She could have replaced herself at number one this week, but instead Madonna single No.2 falls from number two and down one.

2. UB40 and Chrissie Hynde – “I Got You Babe”
Moving up into second place are UB40 and Chrissie Hynde with their version of this Sonny and Cher chart topper as they go up one.

1. Madonna – “Into The Groove”
Which means for a fourth week is the lady with three songs on the chart, Madonna, who claims the number one spot. But she has competition for next week. Will it be UB40 and Chrissie Hynde, Kate Bush, The Cars or someone else that takes pole position? There’s only one way to find out…
