UK Top 40 Singles Chart for 22nd September 1985

So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Richard Skinner broadcast from 5pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales.

This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week there were five new entrys, twelve climbers and three non-movers! And it was announced like this…

40. Rebecca Storm – “The Show”
Rebecca Storm just stays in the top 40 with her theme from the TV series Connie. This week she’s down eleven places.

39. Billy Idol – “White Wedding”
Madonna is reduced to two singles on the chart this week and that ties with Billy Idol, who keeps this one in, and it’s down nine.

38. John Parr – “St. Elmo’s Fire”
There’s a new film called ‘St. Elmo’s Fire’ coming soon that stars Emilio Estevez and Rob Lowe and it has a song to go with it that comes from British singer John Parr, who scores his first top 40 new entry with it.

37. The Thompson Twins – “Don’t Mess With Dr. Dream”
The Thompson Twins still advise not to mess with Dr. Dream. Five weeks on and their latest single goes down eleven places.

36. The Cure – “Close To Me”
Having been in between days, The Cure come straight back with a follow up and the second single from their current album, “The Head On The Door”.

35. Five Star – “Love Take Over”
The third top 40 charting single from Five Star landed last week and it goes up just three places in week two. let’s see if they can make it a third top twenty hit…

34. The Damned – “Is It A Dream?”
The Damned were also a new entry this time last week with their latest and it goes up five in its second. Their last two went top thirty.

33. Dan Hartman – “I Can Dream About You”
More dreams and this time it’s Dan Hartman that’s dreaming of another week in the top 40, which he gets, but eleven places lower.

32. Bryan Ferry – “Don’t Stop The Dance”
Down nine is the latest from Roxy Music’s Bryan Ferry, the second single from his current album, “Boys And Girls”, which is his sixth on his own.

31. Dead Or Alive – “My Heart Goes Bang (Get Me To The Doctor)”
Dead Or Alive return with a new entry, now their fourth to make the top 40 this year and the follow up to “In Too Deep”.

30. Lisa Lisa and The Cult Jam – “I Wonder If I Take You Home”
Lisa Lisa and The Cult Jam have been about for some time with this song and they get another week in the top thirty with it, but down six places.

29. King – “Alone Without You”
British group King have been on for seven weeks with this one, which slides ten places and out of the upper half of the chart.

28. Madness – “Yesterday’s Men”
With five weeks so far, the new single from Madness goes down eight places and also out of the top twenty. Their new album is out in a week’s time.

27. Dire Straits – “Money For Nothing”
The latest from Dire Straits is down six this week. The group are now on tour in support of their already multi-million selling album, “Brothers In Arms”.

26. Princess – “Say I’m Your Number One”
Pop’s Princess, Desiree Heslop, still ranks higher than King as her debut single and former top ten hit drops twelve places.

25. Cameo – “Single Life”
Enjoying a climb of ten are Cameo with their new entry from last week. The song is also the title track of their eleventh studio album.

24. Rene and Angela – “I’ll Be Good”
Rene and Angela promise to be good and they deliver again this week with the song going up seven places, their highest yet.

23. Kate Bush – “Running Up That Hill”
Several departures from the top twenty this week and Kate Bush is one of them as she runs down the chart again by six places.

22. Lloyd Cole and The Commotions – “Brand New Friend”
Week three sees Lloyd Cole and The Commotions going up again, this time five places higher than they were last week.

21. Depeche Mode – “It’s Called A Heart”
Depeche Mode get a big new entry just outside the top twenty with the second new song to come from their upcoming best of collection, which is due out next month.

20. Madonna – “Into The Groove”
So the first of Madonna‘s two singles in the UK top 40 this week is her former number one. Ten weeks in and it’s down eight places.

19. The Cars – “Drive”
The Cars are down six with their biggest hit of the 80’s so far although the album it comes from, “Heartbeat City”, has yet to make the top twenty here.

18. Cliff Richard – “She’s So Beautiful”
Cliff Richard was celebrating his first top twenty hit since “Please Don’t Fall In Love” last week. He remains so but down one a week on.

17. The Style Council – “The Lodgers”
Once again, The Style Council are the highest new entry of their week! Paul and Mick follow “Come To Milton Keynes” with a top twenty entry this time.

16. Colonel Abrams – “Trapped”
Colonel Abrams must have been feeling trapped in the top thirty, because he’s broken out and gone up twelve places into the UK top twenty for the very first time!

15. Jennifer Rush – “The Power Of Love”
Doing much better than that is American singer Jennifer Rush, with her song “The Power Of Love”, as she storms up twenty one places to be this week’s highest climber!

14. UB40 and Chrissie Hynde – “I Got You Babe”
The former one week chart topper from UB40 and Chrissie Hynde falls eight places and out of the top ten. The original from Sonny and Cher was number one twenty years ago for two weeks.

13. Billy Idol – “Rebel Yell”
Here comes Billy’s second single and it takes him back into the top twenty with a climb of twelve places for this second re-issue this year form him.

12. Huey Lewis and The News – “The Power Of Love”
Both songs called “The Power Of Love” are top twenty this week. The one from Huey Lewis and The News is still the highest but down one place.

11. Maria Vidal – “Body Rock”
Overtaking them Maria Vidal rocks her body and the UK chart with her first hit here, which climbs five places to put her within reach of the top ten.

10. Mai Tai – “Body And Soul”
More bodies next and it’s “Body And Soul” from Mai Tai, but unlike their last single, it stops just short of that peak and drops back one place.

9. Baltimora – “Tarzan Boy”
Still swinging from chart position to chart position is the first hit from Italian group Baltimora. This week they are down five places.

8. Amii Stewart – “Knock On Wood”
Amii Stewart came back to the UK top ten for the first time since the 1970’s last week, but her biggest hit of this year slips one place after a high last week.

7. Marillion – “Lavender”
And it looks as if Marillion won’t get such a big a hit as they did with “Kayleigh” as the follow up goes down two places.

6. Red Box – “Lean On Me”
Red Box continue to have good luck as their first top 40 hit continues going up. This week it goes top ten, up twelve places.

5. Madonna – “Angel”
Like Billy Idol, Madonna‘s other single on the chart is going up. Her highest new entry from last week puts her back in the top five, up five places.

4. Midge Ure – “If I Was”
While last week’s highest climber from Midge Ure also goes top five. He’s up four places to number four with his first solo hit since “No Regrets” in 1982.

3. Stevie Wonder – “Part Time Lover”
There’s no change in the top three at all this week as Stevie Wonder’s latest hangs on to third place for a second week.

2. Bonnie Tyler – “Holding Out For A Hero”
And Bonnie Tyler‘s second placed song has to make do with a third week in the same position, unable to go any further.

1. David Bowie and Mick Jagger – “Dancing In The Street”
And that goes for David Bowie and Mick Jagger, who stay top for a whole month with their version of this former 60’s hit. Can they make it to five, or will anyone break out and claim the top spot next week? There’s only one way to find out…
