UK Top 40 Singles Chart for Sunday 26th September 1993
So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 4pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 20th to Saturday 25th September 1993.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases. This week, thirty years ago, there were thirteen new entrys, nine climbers and one non-mover! And it was announced like this…
40. Jade – “One Woman” For Jade, “Don’t Walk Away” and “I Wanna Love You” made the top ten and top twenty respectively. Their third fails to and falls eighteen places in week three.
39. D:Ream – “Star” While D:Ream have achieved three top thirty hits this year. Could this be number four? They are our first new entry this week.
38. Apache Indian – “Nuff Vibes” (EP) Eight weeks on and Apache Indian is still top 40 with his biggest and longest surviving single, but it’s down thirteen places.
37. UB40 – “Higher Ground” UB40 have made it seven weeks with the follow up to their big number one. And like Apache, they are also down thirteen.
36. Kate Bush – “Rubberband Girl” Pinging about all over the place is Kate Bush as her first new solo material of the 1990’s reaches three weeks and falls twenty two places.
35. Staxx – “Joy” We welcome British producer Staxx to the chart this week as Simon Thorne and Tom Jones make the grade with their debut single.
34. The Cocteau Twins – “Evangeline” While it’s a welcome back for The Cocteau Twins with their first single to make the top 40 for three years. This is the first to come from their upcoming seventh studio album.
33. Urban Cookie Collective – “The Key, The Secret” The Urban Cookie Collective are already preparing for a follow up to this massive chart hit that will be out in a few weeks time, meanwhile their thirteen week smash falls thirteen places.
32. Cliff Richard – “Never Let Go” Cliff Richard is back in the top 40 with a new entry. This is the fourth to come from his album…”The Album”, released earlier this year.
31. Go West – “Tracks Of My Tears” And there’s a new entry for Go West this week. The kings of wishful thinking are back with a best of and this cover of The Miracles 1965 top ten hit.
30. Crowded House – “Distant Sun” There’s a new entry fro Crowded House, with something original and with a new album, their fourth on the way next month.
29. 2 Unlimited – “Faces” Five weeks on and 2 Unlimited‘s latest is down thirteen places and out of the top twenty. The song is their third of this year so far.
28. Freddie Mercury – “Living On My Own” Also out of the upper half of the chart is the former chart topper from Freddie Mercury. Week ten finds him out and down eleven places.
27. Dannii Minogue – “This Is The Way” Last time it was it now “This Is The Way” for Dannii Minogue as she gets a new entry with the follow up to her Melba Moore cover from this Summer.
26. Bad Boys Inc. – “Whenever You Need Someone” And back even quicker are Bad Boys Inc., determined to make their make as the new Take That with a new entry and the follow up to “Don’t Talk About Love”.
25. Shara Nelson – “One Goodbye In Ten” Shara Nelson‘s first solo single, “Down That Road”, made the top twenty, but the follow up just misses as she drops back four places.
24. Mariah Carey – “Dreamlover” Mariah Carey leaves the top twenty for the first time with the lead single from her new album as it falls nine places.
23. US3 – “Cantaloop” US3 enjoy a good second week as they go up eight places to make this the highest charting of the two singles they’ve brought onto the top 40.
22. Depeche Mode – “Condemnation” (EP) While the latest collection of songs from “Songs Of Faith And Devotion” from Depeche Mode drops thirteen places and out of the top ten.
21. Paul Young – “Now I Know What Made Otis Blue” Paul Young is no stranger to being a highest climber and he’s done it again with his new track, which goes up fifteen places in its second week.
20. Worlds Apart – “Everlasting Love” Boy band Worlds Apart arrived last week with their version of this former number one and seven days on they go up six places and into the top twenty.
19. Cypress Hill – “When The Ship Goes Down” Making their top twenty debut are Cypress Hill with this new entry, which comes in above where their last single, “Insane In The Brain”, peaked.
18. The Wonder Stuff – “On The Ropes” (EP) The Wonder Stuff made their return to the chart after nearly two years away last week, but their new EP drops down eight places a week on.
17. Billy Joel – “The River Of Dreams” Ten weeks on and Billy Joel is still singing about the river of dreams. He stays top twenty, down six places, with what is one of the biggest sellers of this year.
16. Eternal – “Stay” There’s a big chart debut next for British quartet Eternal, who bring their debut single to the top twenty, which is actually a cover of a song by American singer Glenn Jones in 1990.
15. Manic Street Preachers – “Roses In The Hospital” Next up are the Manic Street Preachers with a new entry and the first from their latest album, “Gold Against The Soul”, to get this far.
14. Radiohead – “Creep” Going down just one this week are Radiohead with the re-issue of their debut single from last year, now with three weeks in the top 40.
13. Stakka Bow – “Here We Go” And here Stakka Bow goes too with his first UK charting single, which climbs six places having debuted this time last week.
12. Belinda Carlisle – “Big Scary Animal” Also up six is the brand new single from Belinda Carlisle, which is her first to break the UK top twenty since “Live Your Life Be Free” in the Autumn of 1991.
11. Bitty McLean – “It Keeps Raining” Ten weeks on and Bitty McLean‘s debut single is still riding fairly high, although he just drops out of the top ten this week by four places.
10. Roxette – “It Must Have Been Love” Roxette return to the top ten for a second time this year and a second time with this single, this week, which goes up two places.
9. Gabrielle – “Going Nowhere” Chart topping debut artist Gabrielle returns with the follow up to her Summer number one and she’ll be hoping for another one just as she is about to release her first album.
8. SWV – “Right Here” SWV were non-movers last week, but get pushed down three places a week later as their biggest hit here makes it six in total in the UK top ten.
7. Haddaway – “Life” The follow up to the top three smash “What Is Love?” from Haddaway goes up one place following its entry this time last week.
6. Frankie Goes To Hollywood – “Relax ’93” While this week’s highest new entry sees the return of controversial 80’s hit “Relax” come back to the chart, nine years after it went to number one, the first of three chart toppers in a row for Frankie Goes To Hollywood in 1984.
5. Culture Beat – “Mr. Vain” Culture Beat have just had a number one, they were there for three weeks with this song and it’s down two places from number three.
4. Chaka Demus and Pliers – “She Don’t Let Nobody” Last week’s highest climber from Chaka Demus and Pliers goes up two and puts the pair back in the top five for a second time.
3. Pet Shop Boys – “Go West” The Pet Shop Boys drop one place with their cover of the Village People’s song, which has been holding on to the number two spot for the past two weeks.
2. M People – “Moving On Up” While M People move on up two places with their highest new entry from last week, giving them an even higher chart high than seven days ago!
1. DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince – “Boom Shake The Room” No one can shake DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince from the top as they get a second week at number one with this tune. Can they make it three in a row though, or will M People move on up and move on in or Chaka Demus and Pliers let themselves in, or maybe someone else will take the prize…there’s only one way to find out…
