UK Top 40 Singles Chart for 29th September 1985
So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Richard Skinner broadcast from 5pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases. This week there were six new entrys, fifteen climbers and NO non-movers! And it was announced like this…
40. The Alarm – “Strength” The Alarm kick off the top 40 this week with a new entry with the title track of their current album that features their previous single “Absolute Reality”.
39. Level 42 – “Something About You” Back with something new are Level 42. The band will release their sixth studio album next month and this is the lead single from it.
38. King – “Alone Without You” Eight weeks on and King are still about with their latest top ten success, which is down nine places and it could be their last.
37. Lisa Lisa and The Cult Jam – “I Wonder If I Take You Home” With just over two months on the chart, Lisa Lisa and The Cult Jam get another week with their first UK chart hit, which is down seven.
36. a-ha – “Take On Me” We welcome Norwegian band a-ha to the UK top 40 this week with their very first hit here, a different version of the one they had a top three hit with back home last year.
35. The Damned – “Is It A Dream?” It was a dream for The Damned to have a third top thirty hit this year, but alas not as their latest drops down one place.
34. Dire Straits – “Money For Nothing” With fourteen weeks on the chart, Dire Straits are heading for the exit and their longest running single for more than three years is down seven places.
33. Kate Bush – “Running Up That Hill” Kate Bush‘s new album is called “Hounds Of Love” and it debuted at number one last week. The lead single in the meantime, is down ten places.
32. Princess – “Say I’m Your Number One” Princess clocks up ten weeks on the chart with her debut single and she’s still number one in some people’s mind as the song falls just six places.
31. The Cult – “Rain” Having scored their first top 40 hit with “She Sells Sanctuary” recently, The Cult are back for a second time and the hope of another top twenty hit.
30. The Cars – “Drive” The Cars leave the top twenty this week, down eleven places with their biggest hit since “My Best Friend’s Girl” back in 1978.
29. Madonna – “Into The Groove” Madonna is the only act with two singles on the chart this week and her former four week number one is down nine places.
28. Five Star – “Love Take Over” Five Star have a much better third week with their latest single, which climbs seven places and into the top thirty.
27. John Parr – “St. Elmo’s Fire” The title track of the new film from Britain’s John Parr also makes good on its entry last week as he goes up eleven places.
26. The Smiths – “The Boy With The Thorn In His Side” The Smiths get a new entry and with something new this time. Their last album, “Meat Is Murder”, produced no top 40 charting singles, so their next kicks off in fine style.
25. UB40 and Chrissie Hynde – “I Got You Babe” With ten weeks on the chart, the former number one from UB40 and Chrissie Hynde falls eleven places and out of the top twenty.
24. The Cure – “Close To Me” While with just two on the chart so far is the latest single from The Cure and they go up twelve places with their new entry from last week.
23. Dead Or Alive – “My Heart Goes Bang (Get Me To The Doctor)” Dead Or Alive also get a new entry last week with this track and seven days later they go up eight places, hoping for another top twenty hit this time next week.
22. Rene and Angela – “I’ll Be Good” Rene and Angela continue to be good and better with their latest which goes up just two places this week after a month in the UK top 40.
21. Cameo – “Single Life” Also with a month on the chart now are Cameo and they are just ahead and also with a climb again this week, this time of four places.
20. Iron Maiden – “Running Free” (Live) This week’s highest new entry comes from rock band Iron Maiden with a live version of their debut single from 1980, which only got to No.34 back then.
19. Lloyd Cole and The Commotions – “Brand New Friend” Lloyd Cole and The Commotions make more friends this week as a climb of three places buts them in the top twenty for the very first time.
18. Depeche Mode – “It’s Called A Heart” The new single from Depeche Mode also goes top twenty and also climbs three places to give the band two in a row from their upcoming best of album.
17. Cliff Richard – “She’s So Beautiful” Good news for Cliff Richard as his latest, which went down last week, goes back up the chart, one place higher than it fell to!
16. Baltimora – “Tarzan Boy” Falling out of the jungle, well nearly, are Baltimora as they leave the top ten in week ten on the UK top 40, down seven places.
15. Mai Tai – “Body And Soul” And down five go Mai Tai with their former top ten hit, their second this year and their second to date here in the UK.
14. Amii Stewart – “Knock On Wood” Also out of the top ten is Amii Stewart with her latest, which is a double A sider with “Light My Fire”, a song she originally released in 1979.
13. The Style Council – “The Lodgers” Last week’s highest new entry from The Style Council does a bit better as they go up four places with the third single to come from their album, “Our Favourite Shop”.
12. Maria Vidal – “Body Rock” Maria Vidal was hoping for a top ten shot this week, but instead her first UK top 40 charting single slips back one place.
11. Huey Lewis and The News – “The Power Of Love” To make way for Huey Lewis and The News, who like Cliff Richard, went down last week but go back up one to where they were two weeks ago!
10. Colonel Abrams – “Trapped” If nothing else, Colonel Abrams is certainly not trapped in the UK top 40 and this week he breaks into the top ten for the first time so this single goes up six places.
9. Marillion – “Lavender” Marillion have already had two top ten hits, this is the latest, and it gets another week here but down two places.
8. Billy Idol – “Rebel Yell” Billy Idol is reduced to just one single in the top 40 this week but a climb of five places puts him back in the top ten for the second time this year.
7. Bonnie Tyler – “Holding Out For A Hero” Having been at number two for the last three weeks, Bonnie Tyler has held out for her hero long enough and goes down five places.
6. Madonna – “Angel” Also going down is Madonna with her fifth single to make the UK top five this year. The follow up to her number one goes down one place.
5. Stevie Wonder – “Part Time Lover” Stevie Wonder has been number three here for two weeks now with his brand new song, but is so no longer as it falls two places.
4. Red Box – “Lean On Me” Red Box are going good with their very first top 40 single and five weeks on they are still climbing and this week into the top five, up two places.
3. David Bowie and Mick Jagger – “Dancing In The Street” There is a new number on this week as the one that’s been there for the last four weeks from David Bowie and Mick Jagger goes down two places!
2. Jennifer Rush – “The Power Of Love” Climbing into the number two spot is this week’s highest climber which comes from Jennifer Rush as she ‘powers’ up thirteen places with the other song on the chart called “The Power Of Love”.
1. Midge Ure – “If I Was” And so with a climb of three, Midge Ure finds himself at number one and for the very first time, Band Aid excepted, in his career! Something he came close to with Ultravox in 1981 but he’s finally done it! But can he keep it, or will Jennifer Rush, Red Box or someone else make it a one week chart topper? There’s only one way to find out…
