So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Richard Skinner broadcast from 5pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from .
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases. This week there were six new entrys, fourteen climbers and three non-movers! And it was announced like this…
40. The Thompson Twins – “King For A Day” We kick off with The Thompson Twins coming straight back with a new entry and a quick follow up to “Don’t Mess With Dr. Dream”, which exited last week.
39. ZZ Top – “Sleeping Bag” we welcome ZZ Top back to the top 40 this week with something new as they hit back with the lead single from their upcoming ninth studio album.
38. Lloyd Cole and The Commotions – “Brand New Friend” Lloyd Cole and The Commotions can boast of one album to their name so far and a second due out next month. This track is from it but it’s down nine places.
37. King – “The Taste Of Your Tears” It’s been a great year finally for King as they have ruled the top ten two twice so far and had a further top thirty hit. Will this new entry be their fourth…?
36. Sade – “The Sweetest Taboo” Sade return to the chart this year for the first time with brand new music and a new album very soon. This is the lead single and gives them their first top 40 hit since “Smooth Operator” last year.
35. Amii Stewart – “Knock On Wood” Amii Stewart has been knocking about for two months with this track, which went top ten, but is now out of the top thirty and down fourteen places.
34. The Style Council – “The Lodgers” The Style Council have been lodging in the top twenty for two weeks with this single but no longer as it falls sixteen places.
33. Echo and The Bunnymen – “Bring On The Dancing Horses” Echo and The Bunnymen return to the chart with a new song and it gives them their eighth top 40 hit single and their first of 1985!
32. Marillion – “Lavender” The smell of lavender gets ever fainter for Marillion as their second top ten hit of this year falls nineteen places.
31. Matt Bianco – “Yeh Yeh” Going the other way is the new entry from the group Matt Bianco from last week, which climbs nine places.
30. The Cure – “Close To Me” The Cure’s latest single misses the top twenty and drops down six places after five weeks on the chart.
29. Rene and Angela – “I’ll Be Good” While Rene and Angela drop seven with their very first UK hit single, which comes from their fourth studio album together.
28. The Smiths – “The Boy With The Thorn In His Side” The Cure and Rene and Angela all missed out on a top twenty hit this time around and so do The Smiths as their latest slips back five places.
27. Iron Maiden – “Running Free” (Live) The live version of Iron Maiden’s debut single has done much better than the studio version did back in 1980 but this week it leaves the upper half of the chart, down nine places.
26. Huey Lewis and The News – “The Power Of Love” “The Power Of Love” was number one last week, but not this one from Huey Lewis and The News as they go down eleven places.
25. Five Star – “Love Take Over” While there will be no taking over for Five Star‘s latest, which holds firm in the same spot for another week.
24. The Clash – “This Is England” Overtaking them is the new single from The Clash, which arrived this time last week and goes up ten places.
23. Tears For Fears – “I Believe” Also going up in their second week are Tears For Fears, who climb fifteen places with their fourth chart hit of this year.
22. Cliff Richard – “She’s So Beautiful” Cliff Richard has been going up and down for a few weeks now with this track, but he takes a slump of five and that takes him out of the top twenty.
21. Level 42 – “Something About You” There is something about the new single from Level 42. It went up last week and it does the same a week on, ten places higher for them.
20. Maria Vidal – “Body Rock” Maria Vidal went back up to her former highest place last week, but that is as far as she goes as the single drops down nine places a week later.
19. Elton John – “Nikita” It’s Elton John that bags this weeks highest new entry and he’s back in the top twenty with the first new song from him and his new album, which will be out next month.
18. Shakin’ Stevens – “Lipstick, Powder And Paint” Just above him is this weeks highest climber which comes from Shakin’ Stevens and his latest single, which rockets up twenty one places!
17. The Cult – “Rain” The Cult return to the top twenty for a second time in their chart career so far as their latest goes up nine places.
16. Madonna – “Angel” Reduced to two songs on the UK top 40 this week, Madonna departs the top ten with her former top five hit, which falls eight places.
15. Cameo – “Single Life” Going up just one this week are Cameo with the title tack of their latest album and the second single from it.
14. Grace Jones – “Slave To The Rhythm” Bond villain Grace Jones has a view to a hit with her latest single. Her second week on the chart sees the song climbing nineteen places.
13. David Bowie and Mick Jagger – “Dancing In The Street” Taking another plunge is the former number one from David Bowie and Mick Jagger as they exit the top ten, down six places.
12. Bonnie Tyler – “Holding Out For A Hero” While just above them is the song that was stuck at number two while they were at number one from Bonnie Tyler. She is down just three this week.
11. Stevie Wonder – “Part Time Lover” And the song that was below both of them at number three from Stevie Wonder is at last above them, but down six places and also out of the top ten.
10. Jan Hammer – “Theme From Miami Vice” Composer Jan Hammer makes the leap into the top ten in his second week as his theme from the US TV series goes up twenty places.
9. Billy Idol – “Rebel Yell” Billy Idol has yelled enough with this single and after five weeks of getting to the top ten, he drops back three places.
8. Simple Minds – “Alive And Kicking” Last week’s highest new entry from Simple Minds goes up four and puts the band back in the top ten for the second time.
7. Madonna – “Gambler” Madonna‘s other single was a new entry last week and it put her back in the UK top ten for the sixth time this year as it goes up thirteen places.
6. John Parr – “St. Elmo’s Fire” The title theme from the new film from Britain’s John Parr continues to climb ever higher and this week he’s up four.
5. a-ha – “Take On Me” The boys from Norway, a-ha were huge movers last week, in fact the highest of all and it doesn’t stop there as they go up nine more this week.
4. Red Box – “Lean On Me” It’s taken Red Box a good six weeks to make it to the top three with their debut single, but that’s it and one week later the song drops down one.
3. Colonel Abrams – “Trapped” Doing a swap with them is Colonel Abrams who feels trapped in the top ten and so moves up one place into the top three.
2. Midge Ure – “If I Was” For one week chart topper from Midge Ure does a but better in second place as that’s where he stays for a second week running.
1. Jennifer Rush – “The Power Of Love” While last week’s new number one from Jennifer Rush sticks it out for a second week as the biggest seller of all. But can she make it three in a row, or will Colonel Abrams, a-ha or someone else have the power to knock her off? There’s only one way to find out…
