UK Top 40 Singles Chart for Sunday 17th October 1993

So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 4pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 11th to Saturday 16th October 1993.

This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week, thirty years ago, there were fifteen new entry’s, two re-entry‘s, five climbers and three non-movers! And it was announced like this…

40. David Bowie – “Miracle Goodnight”
With lots of new entry’s this week, we kick off with David Bowie as the first and the third single from his most recent album, “Black Tie, White Noise”.

39. Roxette – “It Must Have Been Love”
While the second charting of Roxette‘s top three hit from 1990 slides seventeen places as it clocks up six weeks on the chart this time around.

38. WASP – “Sunset And Babylon”
Back to the new entry’s and American rock band WASP come back with this new entry, their first since “Chainsaw Charlie” early last year.

37. Alice In Chains – “Down In A Hole”
It’s been much sooner for Alice In Chains and this follow up to “Angry Chair”, both of which feature on their album “Dirt”.

36. Freak Power – “Turn On, Tune In, Cop Out”
Freak Power debut this week with their debut single, but all it not what it seems as the ring leader of this project is none other than former Housemartin and Beats International artist, Norman Cook!

35. Billy Joel – “All About Soul”
It’s one out and one in for Billy Joel as his long standing top three smash departs only to be followed by the follow up!

34. Lionrock – “Carnival”
Lionrock get a new entry too. This is the follow up to their first top 40 charting single “Packet Of Peace”.

33. Staxx – “Joy”
Having climbed steadily for three weeks, Staxx take no joy in going down eight places and out of the top thirty.

32. Right Said Fred – “Bumped”
We welcome Right Said Fred back to the chart this week with something new as they prepare for their next album, having achieved three top five hits from it.

31. Paul Young – “Now I Know What Made Otis Blue”
Paul Young’s new album is out now and it’s called “The Crossing” and this is the lead single from it which goes down fifteen places.

30. Bon Jovi – “I Believe”
Going down nineteen places are Bon Jovi with the latest single to come from last years “Keep The Faith” album.

29. The Lemonheads – “Into Your Arms”
And down fifteen go The Lemonheads with their new entry from last week as it slides out of the top twenty.

28. Stakka Bow – “Here We Go”
Here goes Stakka Bow, out of the upper half of the chart as weel and down ten places with his first UK hit single.

27. Goodmen – “Give It Up”
We welcome the Goodmen back to the chart this week only two months since they left us with this song, which gets a re-entry!

26. Oui3 – “For What It’s Worth”
And the re-entry’s don’t stop there as Oui3 come back for a second go with this tune, which re-enters two places higher than it achieved, also only a couple of months ago!

25. Lena Fiagbe – “Gotta Get It Right”
Lena Fiagbe is not a re-entry, in fact she’s never had a single out until now. This is her debut and she is very much a new entry on the chart this week!

24. Chris Rea – “Julia”
No stranger to the top 40 is Chris Rea and he bags a new entry this week with the first taste of his upcoming thirteenth album, due out next month.

23. House Of Pain – “Shamrocks And Shenanigans”
There’s a new entry for House Of Pain next and they follow up “Jump Around” which went top ten, with a double A sider along with “Who’s The Man?”.

22. Iron Maiden – “Hallowed Be Thy Name”
As is usually the case, week two of an Iron Maiden single finds it falling hard and their latest, which was last week’s highest new entry, tumbles thirteen places.

21. SWV – “Right Here”
Just slipping out of the top twenty are SWV with their biggest hit yet, which is down five places with over two months on the UK chart so far.

20. Diana Ross – “Chain Reaction”
There’s still no reaction from Diana Ross as the re-issue of her 1986 chart topper pauses for a THIRD consecutive week in the same place!

19. Pet Shop Boys – “Go West”
Going down again are the Pet Shop Boys with their biggest chart hit of this decade. Six weeks on and they are still top twenty but down nine places.

18. The Cat – “Tongue Tied”
The Cat aka actor Danny John-Jules, is one quarter of those star bound trekkers on the Red Dwarf and he’s crossing to the music charts in hope of a hit with this new entry. Goldfish not included!

17. Gabrielle – “Going Nowhere”
Still going nowhere is Gabrielle. A month later and the follow up to her number one debut is down two places but it remains in the upper half of the chart.

16. Culture Beat – “Mr. Vain”
The former number one from Culture Beat drops just three places this week. The song has now been with us for three whole months.

15. Lisa Stansfield – “So Natural”
There’s a new entry next for Lisa Stansfield and this time it’s not with a song from a film, but the title track of her brand new album, which is out in a few weeks time.

14. Prince – “Peach”
Prince was new on last week with this track and seven days later, he climbs three places with the first cut from his new “Hits” album.

13. Frankie Goes To Hollywood – “Relax ’93”
Frankie Goes To Hollywood dive out of the top ten this week with the remix of their debut number one smash from 1984, which falls five places.

12. Bjork with David Arnold – “Play Dead”
Bjork has been working towards a big hit for some months now and now for the first time she gets a top twenty entry here in the UK thanks to composer David Arnold who scores a new film called ‘The Young Americans’.

11. INXS – “The Gift”
There’s a big new entry next for INXS as they come back with a brand new song, which gives them their highest charting UK single since “Suicide Blonde” in 1990.

10. Dina Carroll – “Don’t Be A Stranger”
Dina Carroll achieves something she’s so far eluded, a top ten hit on her own. But single number six does it and with a climb of nine places, it’s also this week’s highest!

9. Haddaway – “Life”
Life for Haddaway takes a different turn as his second UK single goes down three places and misses a top five slot.

8. The Prodigy – “One Love”
While The Prodigy return to the top ten with their newest release, going up four to give the group their fourth top ten hit.

7. Cappella – “U Got 2 Let The Music”
This week’s highest new entry sees the return to the top ten of Cappella with the follow up to “U Got 2 Know”.

6. Chaka Demus and Pliers – “She Don’t Let Nobody”
The top three don’t let Chaka Demus and Pliers as the follow up to “Tease Me” fails to make it that far and instead drops back two places.

5. M People – “Moving On Up”
M People are moving on nowhere as their biggest hit to date pauses as a non-mover while their album “Elegant Slumming” slumps to No.6.

4. Eternal – “Stay”
Good news for the debut single from British girl group Eternal as they go up again, three for them this week and that takes them into the top five.

3. DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince – “Boom Shake The Room”
The former number one from DJ Jazzy Jeff and The Fresh Prince stops for a second week in third place as a non-mover.

2. Take That and Lulu – “Relight My Fire”
While the song that knocked them off the top from Take That and Lulu gets knocked off the top. The sextet drop down one place after two weeks there.

1. Meat Loaf – “I’d Do Anything For Love…”
So we have a new number one and it’s a first for America’s Meat Loaf as he goes up one to claim his very first UK chart topping single ever! But can he keep it, or will Eternal, Cappella or someone else steal it away from him? There’s only one way to find out…
