UK Top 40 Singles Chart for 10th November 1985

So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Richard Skinner broadcast from 5pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales.

This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week there were six new entrys, fourteen climbers and two non-movers! And it was announced like this…

40. Evelyn ‘Champagne’ King – “Your Personal Touch”
It’s been three years, but Evelyn ‘Champagne’ King is back in the UK top 40 this week with a new entry and she has a new album on the way.

39. Midge Ure – “That Certain Smile”
Former chart topper Midge Ure returns quickly with a follow up with this new entry, but can he take it all the way again…?

38. Dee C. Lee – “See The Day”
Dee C. Lee is better known as a backing singer for The Style Council, but she breaks free and this is her debut single which gives her a top 40 entry in her own right.

37. Midge Ure – “If I Was”
Here comes Midge again and this is that number one that’s he’s following up this week, which survives a tenth week on the chart but is down thirteen places.

36. Red Box – “Lean On Me”
Red Box have been around for three months with this track and they too stay top 40 for perhaps another week as they fall eleven.

35. Billy Idol – “Rebel Yell”
Clocking up a tenth week is Billy Idol with his biggest hit yet and he’s down nine places and out of the top thirty.

34. Lionel Richie – “Say You, Say Me”
We welcome Lionel Richie to the chart this week with a new entry and the first track to come from a new album he is currently working on.

33. Dionne Warwick and Friends – “That’s What Friends Are For”
Back too is Dionne Warwick, having scored two big hits in 1982 with songs written by the Bee Gees, this time she hooks up with the likes of Elton John and Stevie Wonder for a song that has been recorded to raise funds for the American Foundation for AIDS Research.

32. Echo and The Bunnymen – “Bring On The Dancing Horses”
Going down five this week are Echo and The Bunnymen, in their fifth week with a new track from their upcoming greatest hits album that’s out in a weeks time.

31. Bryan Adams and Tina Turner – “It’s Only Love”
Going up five are Bryan Adams and Tina Turner with this duet that features on Bryan’s current album along with “Run To You” and “Somebody”.

30. The Communards – “You Are My World”
New pop duo The Communards got their first top thirty hit last week, but that’s as far as they go for now as the song is a non-mover.

29. The Waterboys – “The Whole Of The Moon”
Jumping over them are The Waterboys as they climb ten places and into the top thirty for the very first time.

28. Siouxsie and The Banshees – “Cities Of Dust”
Siouxsie and The Banshees nearly made it to the top twenty, but it was so near and yet so far away as they go down seven places.

27. Kate Bush – “Cloudbusting”
Kate Bush did get there and she has been a non-mover at No.20 for two weeks now, but not so anymore as she also falls seven.

26. Grace Jones – “Slave To The Rhythm”
No longer a slave to the top twenty is former Bond baddie Grace Jones as she departs and also falls seven.

25. Madness – “Uncle Sam”
Madness are on the up again. Week three finds them three places higher than they were before with the follow up to “Yesterday’s Men”.

24. Lloyd Cole and The Commotions – “Lost Weekend”
Lloyd Cole and The Commotions are heading for another top twenty hit as their second single of this year goes up thirteen places.

23. Jan Hammer – “Theme From Miami Vice”
Going down nine is Jan Hammer with the theme to the American TV series of the same name as he closes his time in the UK top twenty.

22. Dire Straits – “Brothers In Arms”
Up just one this week are Dire Straits with the title track of their multi-million selling album of this year.

21. Simon May Orchestra – “Howards Way Theme”
There’s another TV theme close by and it’s the one from the Simon May Orchestra from the British TV drama series and it also goes up one place.

20. Shakin’ Stevens – “Lipstick, Powder And Paint”
Shakin’ Stevens remains top twenty this week but down five places with the first track to come from his forthcoming new album.

19. Paul Hardcastle – “Just For Money”
Paul Hardcastle had a five week chart topper earlier this year with “19” and he’s on his way to another one as his latest climbs twelve places.

18. Simple Minds – “Alive And Kicking”
Still very much alive and kicking are Simple Minds. Week six sees them down seven places but still in the upper half of the chart.

17. John Parr – “St. Elmo’s Fire”
St. Elmo’s fire seems to be extinguished now and so does John Parr‘s time in the top ten as he drops eight places.

16. Arcadia – “Election Day”
As are Arcadia aka Duran Duran, their debut single is down six. The trio’s debut album is out in a week’s time.

15. Matt Bianco – “Yeh Yeh”
Having climbed the chart for the past six weeks, Matt Bianco have had enough and drop back two places. Yeh yeh!

14. Madonna – “Gambler”
Now very used to having just one song in the UK top 40 is American singer Madonna. Week six finds her down six places.

13. Doug E. Fresh and The Get Fresh Crew – “The Show”
Putting on a show is Doug E. Fresh and The Get Fresh Crew as they shoot up nineteen places to be this week’s highest climbers.

12. Talking Heads – “Road To Nowhere”
Still going on their road to somewhere are Talking Heads as they go up five with what is now their highest charting single here in the UK!

11. King – “The Taste Of Your Tears”
King are also climbing still but just one for them this week as they park themselves just outside the top ten.

10. Eurythmics and Aretha Franklin – “Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves”
Last week’s highest climbers, the Eurythmics and Aretha Franklin, go up eight a week on and find themselves in the top ten.

9. Queen – “One Vision”
Just above them is this week’s highest new entry and it’s a brand new tune from Queen that gives the band their biggest hit for over a year and the first to come from their as yet unfinished new album.

8. The Far Corporation – “Stairway To Heaven”
Climbing the stairway to heaven eight places puts The Far Corporation in the UK top ten with their cover of the Led Zeppelin classic.

7. Colonel Abrams – “Trapped”
Trapped no longer is Colonel Abrams as he drops two more places this week with his former top three smash.

6. Level 42 – “Something About You”
While after seven weeks of progress, Level 42 are non-movers just outside the top five for a second week running.

5. UB40 – “Don’t Break My Heart”
UB40 are aiming for another number one as the follow up to “I Got You Babe” goes up two and into the top five.

4. Elton John – “Nikita”
Moving down one is the latest from Elton John, which is his best performing and highest charting single of the 80’s so far.

3. a-ha – “Take On Me”
Also down one are the boys from Norway, a-ha, having been stuck at number two for the past three weeks.

2. Jennifer Rush – “The Power Of Love”
And down one is the former number one from Jennifer Rush, having spent the last five weeks on top of the UK singles chart.

1. Feargal Sharkey – “A Good Heart”
Which means we have a new number one and its a good heart that has got him there, Feargal Sharkey goes up three places to become the biggest seller of all this week! But can he keep it, or will UB40 or someone else take it from him? There’s only one way to find out…
