UK Top 40 Singles Chart for 17th November 1985
So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Richard Skinner broadcast from 5pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases. This week there were five new entrys, fifteen climbers and two non-movers! And it was announced like this…
40. Prefab Sprout – “When Love Breaks Down” We welcome, for the first time, a British group called Prefab Sprout to the UK top 40 and it’s with a single they brought out last year which fell way short of this new position.
39. Siouxsie and The Banshees – “Cities In Dust” There’s almost nothing but dust left for Siouxsie and The Banshees as their latest falls eleven places after five weeks on the chart.
38. Grace Jones – “Slave To The Rhythm” With seven weeks, Grace Jones comes next and she is down twelve with her biggest solo hit here in the UK to date.
37. Evelyn ‘Champagne’ King – “Your Personal Touch” Good news for Evelyn ‘Champagne’ King as her new single climbs three in its second week on the chart and off the bottom.
36. David Grant and Jaki Graham – “Mated” The last time David Grant and Jaki Graham got together they enjoyed a huge hit with “Could It Be I’m Falling In Love?“. Let’s see how this new entry does for them…
35. Shakin’ Stevens – “Lipstick, Powder And Paint” Shaky is down and out of the top twenty this week as his version of this 50’s number drops fifteen places.
34. Simple Minds – “Alive And Kicking” Following him are Simple Minds as they depart the upper half of the top 40, down sixteen for them after seven weeks.
33. The Communards – “You Are My World” Also going down is former Bronski Beat singer Jimmy Somerville with his new duo, The Communards, as their debut single falls three places.
32. Arcadia – “Election Day” While Duran Duran members as Arcadia fall sixteen with their debut single, which has been on the chart for five weeks.
31. Jan Hammer – “Theme From Miami Vice” With seven weeks is composer Jan Hammer with the theme tune from the hit US TV series and he’s down eight places.
30. Matt Bianco – “Yeh Yeh” Lots of room for a new top twenty this week and they keep coming and Matt Bianco is next, down fifteen places.
29. Bryan Adams and Tina Turner – “It’s Only Love” Bryan Adams and Tina Turner move into the top thirty in their third week as their duet climbs two places.
28. Midge Ure – “That Certain Smile” But former chart topper Midge Ure goes up eleven with the follow up to “If I Was”, which has left the top 40 this week.
27. John Parr – “St. Elmo’s Fire” Back to the top twenty departures and John Parr is next, down ten with his first smash hit single from a hit film.
26. The Waterboys – “The Whole Of The Moon” Irish band The Waterboys are three places higher in their third week on the top 40 with their very first chart hit.
25. Phil Collins and Marilyn Martin – “Separate Lives” Phil Collins took “Easy Lover” to number one with Phil Bailey earlier this year so let’s see what he can do with American singer Marilyn Martin as she gets her first UK top 40 entry.
24. Madness – “Uncle Sam” Madness are still going with Uncle Sam and week four sees them up just one place to number twenty four.
23. Whitney Houston – “Saving All My Love For You” Next up is a chart newcomer as we welcome American singer Whitney Houston to the UK top 40 after three previous singles released here that failed to get this far.
22. Madonna – “Gambler” Fellow American Madonna is no stranger to the UK chart and this year alone has seen six singles in the top 40. Her latest is down eight places.
21. Simon May Orchestra – “Howards Way Theme” Simon May and his Orchestra moor their boat here for a second week as the theme to the new TV series in the boatyard is a non-mover.
20. Paul Hardcastle – “Just For Money” The man with one of this year’s biggest sellers, Paul Hardcastle, is not going to get another one just yet as his latest drops back one place.
19. Dionne Warwick and Friends – “That’s What Friends Are For” Dionne Warwick and her friends go up fourteen and into the top twenty with their charity single, which was originally recorded by Rod Stewart in 1982.
18. Dee C Lee – “See The Day” We have two joint highest climbers of twenty places on this weeks chart and former Style Council backing singer Dee C Lee is one of them as she powers into the top twenty.
17. Lloyd Cole and The Commotions – “Lost Weekend” One of many newcomers to this weeks refresh top twenty are Lloyd Cole and The Commotions as they go up seven places.
16. Dire Straits – “Brothers In Arms” Joining them are Dire Straits with the title track of their current LP, which climbs six places to give the band a third top twenty hit this year.
15. King – “The Taste Of Your Tears” King were hoping for another top ten hit this week, but it was not to be as they fall back four places.
14. Lionel Richie – “Say You, Say Me” Lionel Richie is the other joint highest climber of twenty as he returns to the UK top twenty in week two.
13. Colonel Abrams – “Trapped” Colonel Abrams has been ‘trapped’ in the UK top ten for the last two months, but is so no longer and falls six places.
12. Doug E. Fresh and The Get Fresh Crew – “The Show” Last week’s lone highest climber was this song from Doug E. Fresh and The Get Fresh Crew but a week on just one is all they can manage.
11. The Far Corporation – “Stairway To Heaven” While The Far Corporation fall off their stairway and leave the top ten, down three places, after just one week.
10. Talking Heads – “Road To Nowhere” Talking Heads’ road to nowhere leads them to the UK top ten for the very first time as they move up two places.
9. Eurythmics and Aretha Franklin – “Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves” Going up one this week are the Eurythmics and Aretha Franklin, doing it for themselves after a month on the chart.
8. Level 42 – “Something About You” With two months on the chart now, Level 42 have peaked and fall back two places with the lead single from their new album, “World Machine”.
7. Queen – “One Vision” Last week’s highest new entry came from Queen with their first single to come from an as yet unfinished album and they go up two places in week two.
6. Elton John – “Nikita” Elton John features on Dionne Warwick’s climber at No.19 while his own solo entry goes down two and out of the top five.
5. a-ha – “Take On Me” Norway’s a-ha strike up two months in the UK top 40 with their debut single and they are still top five but down two places.
4. Jennifer Rush – “The Power Of Love” Also down two is the former five week chart topper from Jennifer Rush as she notches up ten weeks on the chart.
3. UB40 – “Don’t Break My Heart” UB40 are slowly making tracks to the very top as the follow up to their cover of Sonny and Cher’s chart topper goes up two places.
2. Wham – “I’m Your Man” George and Andrew are back with a brand new single together and Wham get this weeks highest new entry, the first since their festive offering last Christmas(!)
1. Feargal Sharkey – “A Good Heart” For this week, it’s a good heart that keeps Feargal Sharkey on top for a second week with his very first number one. But can he make it three in a row, or will Wham, UB40 or someone else take it from him? There’s only one way to find out…
