UK Top 40 Singles Chart for Sunday 5th December 1993
So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 4pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 29th November to Saturday 4th December 1993.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases. This week, thirty years ago, there were eleven new entrys, one re-entry, four climbers and NO non-movers! And it was announced like this…
40. Go West – “We Close Our Eyes” Go West follow up “Tracks Of My Tears” with a re-release of their debut single from 1985, which is also their biggest and highest charting single to date!
39. Pauline Henry – “Feel Like Making Love” Pauline Henry feels like making it a sixth week in the top 40 with this single, which is down eleven places.
38. David Bowie – “The Buddha Of Suburbia” Going down three is David Bowie with his new entry from last week and the title song of the new BBC2 drama series.
37. Funkadoobiest – “Wopbabalubop” Funkadoobiest are an American hip hop group that formed in 1989 but only now do they get their first UK top 40 new entry with a track that was originally released last year.
36. Michael Bolton – “Said I Loved You But I Lied” Five weeks on and Michael Bolton is still lying with his new recording, which is down just five places this week.
35. Cappella – “U Got 2 Let The Music” With eight weeks on the chart, Cappella are still with us with their highest charting single yet, which falls eleven places.
34. Goodmen – “Give It Up” With its return to the top 40 some eight weeks ago, Goodmen are one of the forty biggest sellers of this year. The song goes down twelve this week.
33. 2 Unlimited – “Maximum Overdrive” Putting themselves into maximum reverse are 2 Unlimited as they drop ten with their latest and only their second release not to make the top ten.
32. Lisa Stansfield – “Little Bit Of Heaven” There’s a new entry for Lisa Stansfield next and the follow up to the title track of her latest album, which is her third as a solo artist.
31. Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle – “A Whole New World” There is a new animated film of Aladdin coming out courtesy of Disney and the main some from it is sung by American Soul singers Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle, who get a new entry this week.
30. Terence Trent D’Arby – “Let Her Down Easy” Being let down easy once more is Terence Trent D’Arby with the fourth single from this years “Symphony Or Damn” album, which is down nine places.
29. Bad Boys Inc. – “Walking On Air” Bad Boys Inc. come back for a third attempt at a top 40 charting single as they get a new entry. The five lads are currently recording their debut album, due out next Spring.
28. Culture Beat – “Got To Get It” Culture Beat fail to get ‘it’ with this single, which sinks ten places in its sixth week on the UK chart.
27. Sagat – “Funk Dat” Producer Sagat arrived on the UK top 40 last week with this tune, but seven days on and it drops down three places.
26. Gabrielle – “I Wish” What a year Gabrielle has had with a debut number one smash, one of the biggest sellers of all, and a successful first album. This is the third single from it and it gives her a third top 40 entry.
25. Urban Cookie Collective – “Feels Like Heaven” That also goes for the Urban Cookie Collective with two top ten hits and also one of the biggest sellers of the year. It’s not this one, which falls fourteen places.
24. UB40 – “Bring Me Your Cup” UB40 have one of the biggest sellers too with their cover of the old Elvis song “Can’t Help Falling In Love”. This track comes from their latest, Platinum selling album and it’s a new entry.
23. Lesley Garrett and Amanda Thompson – “Ave Maria” Opera stars Lesley Garrett and Amanda Thompson have been non-movers for the last two weeks with this ancient song, but are so no longer as they go down seven places.
22. Snoop Doggy Dog – “What’s My Name?” Down and out of the top twenty with his first UK single is Snoop Doggy Dog as seven days later he is two places lower.
21. Bjork – “Big Time Sensuality” As is Bjork with her second top twenty hit of this year, which falls four places. Her ‘debut’ album has now gone Platinum here.
20. K-Klass – “Let Me Show You” K-Klass show you for another week in the top twenty with their brand new song, which is down six places.
19. Soul Asylum – “Runaway Train” Running away with the re-issue of their single from this year are Soul Asylum as they depart the top ten, down nine places.
18. Mariah Carey – “Hero” Week six of Mariah Carey’s latest release sees the song fall three places. This is the second to come from her third album, “Music Box”.
17. Blind Melon – “No Rain” American band Blind Melon formed in 1990 and released their debut album last year. This is the second single from it and it gives them their very first UK chart hit!
16. Pet Shop Boys – “I Wouldn’t Normally Do This Kind Of Thing” Chris and Neil have enjoyed two top ten hits this year and their ‘very’ first number one album! Could this be number three? Stay tuned…
15. Cypress Hill – “I Ain’t Going Out Like That” Every time Cypress Hill release a single it goes in higher than the last one. Their third new entry this year is their highest yet.
14. Dina Carroll – “The Perfect Year” Speaking of which, Each of Dina Carroll‘s last three singles have all been her highest debut and this is her biggest yet as she returns with a brand new recording, from the Andre Lloyd-Webber musical Sunset Boulevard.
13. The Village People – “YMCA ’93” The Pet Shop Boys covered The Village People’s “Go West” this Summer and they are back in the chart with something new this week. The remix of the latter’s former number one is down one place, meanwhile.
12. The Doobie Brothers – “Long Train Running ’93” Another old 70’s song remixed for 1993 is the one from The Doobie Brothers and they drop out of the top ten this week, down five places.
11. M People – “Don’t Look Any Further” M People follow on with their new entry from last week falling two places. It’s still done better than the original, which reached No.45 here in 1984.
10. Janet Jackson – “Again” Janet Jackson is in the UK top ten again. This week she’s down another two places in her third week here.
9. East 17 – “It’s Alright” East 17 are doing alright as they return to the top ten with this week’s highest climber of ten places.
8. Dina Carroll – “Don’t Be A Stranger” Here comes Dina again, the artist with two singles now in the chart and it’s an eighth week in the top ten, down three to number eight.
7. Bryan Adams – “Please Forgive Me” Dina and Bryan Adams keep close to each other…so far, or should that be ‘so close'(!) Bryan is also down three places.
6. Bee Gees – “For Whom The Bell Tolls” Returning to the top ten after an absence of two and a half years are the Bee Gees! Last week’s highest climber is up seven to bring them back.
5. Prince – “Controversy” The highest new entry this week brings Prince back to the UK top ten for the first time this year with a quick follow up to “Peach”.
4. U2 – “Stay (Faraway, So Close)” U2 go up two with their new entry from last week, giving the band their first top five showing since “The Fly” in late 1991.
3. Elton John and Kiki Dee – “True Love” So near and yet so far(away) this time for former chart toppers Elton John and Kiki Dee as their first duet for seventeen years heads away from the top and down one.
2. Meat Loaf – “I’d Do Anything For Love…” And that also goes for the song that’s been there for the past seven weeks, Meat Loaf is no longer number one! He falls one place to make way for…
1. Mr. Blobby – “Mr. Blobby” …the man with the pink and yellow body, yes Mr. Blobby, last week’s highest new entry, goes up three places to claim the top of the chart as well as being top of the TV ratings too! But can he stay there, or will U2, Prince, the Bee Gees or someone else put an end to the madness before it’s begun? There’s only one way to find out…
