UK Top 40 Singles Chart for 1st January 1984

So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Tommy Vance broadcast from 5pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales.

This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week, forty years ago, there were three new entrys, two re-entrys, twelve climbers and eight non-movers! And it was announced like this…

40. Snowy White – “Bird Of Paradise”
Thin Lizzy guitarist Snowy White kicks off the first chart of 1984 with this new entry from his debut solo album.

39. Lionel Richie – “All Night Long”
There’s a re-entry for Lionel Richie’s most recent smash hit, which returns to the chart after one week away.

38. Jingle Belles – “Christmas Spectre”
For the Jingle Belles, Christmas is over as they drop one place from where this Christmas effort peaked.

37. Black Lace – “Superman”
There’s another chart re-entry for Black Lace this week as they comeback after four weeks away with their latest.

36. Lionel Richie – “Running With The Night”
Coming back with something newer is Lionel Richie, this time it’s a new entry with the follow up to the song at No.39!

35. Frankie Goes To Hollywood – “Relax”
The highest new entry this week is a debut single that’s been lingering about lower down for two months now but finally sees Liverpool group Frankie Goes To Hollywood enter the top 40.

34. Simple Minds – “Waterfront”
Simple Minds make it a seventh week in the top 40, down three places with the lead single from their upcoming new album.

33. Elvis Presley – “I Can Help”
Moving up three is the new release of Elvis Presley’s 1975 recording of this song from Billy Swan taken from his album, “Today”.

32. Rod Stewart – “Sweet Surrender”
There’s no change for Rod Stewart as he is a non-mover with the third single from his album “Body Wishes”.

31. Eurythmics – “Right By Your Side”
Right by your side for a tenth week but down three are the Eurythmics with their fourth hit to make the top 40.

30. Culture Club – “Karma Chameleon”
With over four months now on the chart is this former number one from Culture Club and it’s going back up five and into the top thirty again!

29. Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson – “Say Say Say”
With three months in the top 40, Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson drop four places with their collaboration.

28. Tears For Fears – “The Way You Are”
Roland and Kurt of Tears For Fears climb one place into 1984, having been non-movers for the past two weeks.

27. Genesis – “That’s All”
That’s all for genesis in the top twenty as they slide nine places with the second single from their self-titled album.

26. Frank Kelly – “Christmas Countdown”
Christmas has passed but Frank Kelly is still counting down, perhaps to next year, as he goes up eight places!

25. Wham – “Club Fantastic”
The boys from Wham fall four places with their megamix of three tracks from their debut album, making it five hit singles from it.

24. Marilyn – “Calling Your Name”
Ten weeks on and Marilyn is still calling your name, but outside the top twenty now, down just one this week.

23. Barry Manilow – “Read Em And Weep”
Barry Manilow departs the upper half of the chart with his latest offering, which is down six places in week five.

22. Shakin’ Stevens – “Cry Just A Little Bit”
Going back up the chart is Shakin’ Stevens. ten weeks after this song joined us, it’s two places higher than it was.

21. Dennis Waterman and George Cole – “What Are We Gonna Her Er Indoors?”
The Minder duo of Dennis Waterman and George Cole continue to climb the chart, slowly still. This week they are up five places.

20. Slade – “Merry Christmas Everyone”
Slade’s former number one from way back when is a non-mover again this week, propping up the top twenty.

19. Kool and The Gang – “Straight Ahead”
And that goes for Kool and The Gang with this one as they stop for a time in the spot where they ascended to last week.

18. Roland Rat Superstar – “Rat Rapping”
Jumping over them is TV ‘sensation’ Roland Rat as he raps his way into the top twenty with a climb of nine places.

17. UB40 – “Many Rivers To Cross”
Slipping one place are UB40 with this number, having taken a month to get into the top twenty and peak.

16. The Pretenders – “2000 Miles”
The Pretenders were non-movers last week with this festive tune, but seven days on they too are down one place.

15. Tracey Ullman – “Move Over Darling”
Going down three is comedian Tracey Ullman with her cover of this Doris Day song from the film of the same name.

14. Billy Joel – “Uptown Girl”
Week fourteen sees the former number one from Billy Joel stuck at number fourteen for a second week as a non-mover.

13. Cliff Richard – “Please Don’t Fall In Love”
While exiting the top ten is Cliff Richard with his contender for the top this year, which is down three.

12. Tina Turner – “Let’s Stay Together”
Tina Turner is also out with her version of this song, which is also down three places, having been in the UK top 40 for two months now.

11. Michael Jackson – “Thriller”
The title track from Michael Jackson‘s current album rebounds and goes back up two places in his eighth week with this spooky number.

10. Howard Jones – “What Is Love?”
Howard Jones finally makes it to the top ten with this single. It’s taken him six weeks to get here, with a climb of one place!

9. Paul McCartney – “Pipes Of Peace”
Here’s Paul McCartney again, this time on his own and with a boost of thirteen places, he is this week’s highest climber!

8. The Thompson Twins – “Hold Me Now”
The Thompson Twins are down two this week, two months after this song arrived on the top 40, having spent Christmas in the top five.

7. Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton – “Islands In The Stream”
Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton have also been about for two months but they are still going strong and are up one place into 1984.

6. Billy Joel – “Tell Her About It”
Billy Joel also has two singles in the chart, this is the follow up to his number one and it too is up one place.

5. Status Quo – “Marguerita Time”
It may be Marguerita time for Status Quo, but they are going nowhere as week five finds them a non-mover at number five.

4. Culture Club – “Victims”
Culture Club’s follow up to “Karma Chameleon” is going down this week, it’s still top five but one place lower.

3. Paul Young – “Love Of The Common People”
Going back up the chart and back into the top three is Paul Young, up one place in his eighth week with this one.

2. Slade – “My Oh My”
Holding on to second place still are Slade with their other single, which is also two months old now and I bet it feels like it’s been two months in second place for them too!

1. The Flying Pickets – “Only You”
Which means for the fifth week running, the Christmas number one from The Flying Pickets stays at the top for the new year. Can they make it a sixth, or will Paul Young or someone else finally topple them? There’s only one way to find out…
