UK Top 40 Singles Chart for Sunday 2nd January 1994

So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 4pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 27th December 1993 to Saturday 1st January 1994.

This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week, thirty years ago, there were seven new entrys, fourteen climbers and two non-movers! And it was announced like this…

40. The Village People – “YMCA ’93”
The Village People get a sixth week in the top 40 with the remix of this song, which falls five places.

39. Tag Team – “Whoomp (There It Is)”
The first new entry of a new year is also a debut release and it comes from US hip hop group Tag Team as they debut on the UK top 40.

38. Alison Limerick – “Time Of Our Lives”
Next we welcome back Alison Limerick to the chart with brand new music for 1994 which is her first hit single for two years!

37. Culture Beat – “Got To Get It”
Culture Beat’s re-entry from last week climbs three places a week on, giving the song a ninth in the UK top 40.

36. Bjork – “Big Time Sensuality”
While Iceland’s Bjork slips two places with the latest from her debut album of last year, called “Debut”.

35. Soul Asylum – “Runaway Train”
The runaway train from Soul Asylum is down five this week, having moved back up the chart for the past two weeks.

34. Terrorvision – “My House”
New to the top 40 for 1994 are British band Terrorvision, who finally get a chart hit, six singles down and with a re-issue of a song from 1992!

33. The Mission – “Tower Of Strength”
Coming back to the top 40 for a second go are The Mission with a remix of their single from 1988, which got to No.12 back then.

32. Cypress Hill – “I Ain’t Going Out Like That”
Cypress Hill fall just one this week with their biggest UK hit to date, the group’s third to make it to the UK top 40.

31. Whitney Houston – “I Will Always Love You”
Last week’s highest climber from Whitney with her former number one, goes down six places as she enters 1994.

30. The Doobie Brothers – “Long Train Running ’93”
The Doobie Brothers go down three with the remix of their 1970’s original, now in its seventh week on the chart.

29. Diana Ross – “Your Love”
Bad news for Diana Ross as her brand new single slides fifteen places having given the lady her highest charting UK single for over a year.

28. U2 – “Stay (Faraway, So Close)”
Not bad for U2 and their only top 40 charting single of 1993 goes back up, but only by one place in its sixth week.

27. Ice-T – “That’s How I’m Livin'”
American rapper Ice-T is four places lower with his first charting UK single, a month on from its release.

26. Pet Shop Boys – “I Wouldn’t Normally Do This Kind Of Thing”
Chris and Neil have been doing this kind of thing for five weeks now and are down two places with the third single from “Very”.

25. Hulk Hogan and Green Jelly – “I’m The Leader Of The Gang”
Still climbing are Hulk Hogan and Green Jelly with this track, which is up one, a new high for it in its second outing on the UK top 40.

24. Bad Boys Inc. – “Walking On Air”
And there’s a new high for Bad Boys Inc. with this song, which climbs four places after spending five weeks in the top thirty.

23. Wet Wet Wet – “Cold Cold Heart”
There’s a new entry from Wet Wet Wet this week with the second new song from their greatest hits, which follows “Shed A Tear” in November.

22. DJ Duke – “Blow Your Whistle”
We welcome DJ Duke to the UK chart this year. American DJ Ken Duke makes his top 40 debut here having released singles since 1990.

21. Elton John and Kiki Dee – “True Love”
Dropping right out of thew top ten and the upper half of the chart are Elton John and Kiki Dee who suffer a fall of eleven places.

20. Frankie Goes To Hollywood – “The Power Of Love”
The re-issue of Frankie Goes To Hollywood‘s third number one hit falls seven places in its fourth week back on the chart.

19. Pearl Jam – “Daughter”
While last week’s highest new entry from Pearl Jam goes down one in just its second week on the UK chart.

18. Shabba Ranks and Patra – “Family Affair”
Shabba Ranks and Patra move into the top twenty for 1994 with their cover of this old classic, which climbs four places.

17. M People – “Don’t Look Any Further”
Also going up, back up in fact, are M People with this cover version, which is two places higher than it descended to last week.

16. EYC – “Feelin’ Alright”
American trio EYC continue to feel alright with their debut single as it goes up four places in its fourth week.

15. Haddaway – “I Miss You”
Also with four weeks on the chart is Haddaway with his third UK single, which is up just one in its fourth week.

14. Mariah Carey – “Hero”
Ten weeks on and Mariah Carey is still top twenty and she’s going back up again this week, one place above where she was.

13. Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle – “A Whole New World”
It has been a whole new world for American singers Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle with this song from the film ‘Aladdin’, but having been non-movers last week, they drop down one.

12. Janet Jackson – “Again”
Janet Jackson is trying for another hit with this song again, as she turns around and goes back up the chart five places, which is this week’s highest!

11. Bryan Adams – “Please Forgive Me”
Back in 1985, Bryan Adams held the number eleven spot for three weeks with “Run To You” and he’s done it again, a non-mover for a third week running nine years later!

10. D:Ream – “Things Can Only Get Better”
D:Ream have tried with this song three times now and it’s third time lucky for them as this remix not only gives them their very first top ten hit, it’s also this week’s highest new entry!

9. Meat Loaf – “Bat Out Of Hell”
Falling one is Meat Loaf with the re-load of an older song of his, which clocks up a month in the UK top ten.

8. Meat Loaf – “I’d Do Anything For Love…”
And here he is again, down one also with his much newer, former chart topper, which clocks up fourteen weeks in the top ten!

7. K7 – “Come Baby Come”
Rapper and producer K7 goes up three places with his debut single, which celebrates a month on the UK top 40.

6. Bee Gees – “For Whom The Bell Tolls”
While the Bee Gees fall out of the top five and down two places with their biggest chart hit of the 1990’s so far.

5. Dina Carroll – “The Perfect Year”
Dina Carroll goes up one again this week and in doing so, she claims her second top five single, five weeks since she joined us.

4. East 17 – “It’s Alright”
Also going up one are the boys from Walthamstow, East 17, with what is now their highest charting single!

3. Mr. Blobby – “Mr. Blobby”
We have a new number one for a new year as the Christmas chart topper from Mr. Blobby sinks two places.

2. Take That – “Babe”
But it’s not Take That, last year’s runner up, as they hold tight in second place for a third consecutive week.

1. Chaka Demus and Pliers – “Twist And Shout”
Which means with a climb of two places, Chaka Demus and Pliers are number one for 1994 and take their third single to the top of the UK singles chart! But can they keep it, or will East 17, Dina Carroll or even Take That take it from them? There’s only one way to find out…
