UK Top 40 Singles Chart for 15th January 1984
So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Simon Bates broadcast from 5pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases. This week, forty years ago, there were ten new entrys, eleven climbers and one non-mover! And it was announced like this…
40. Madonna – “Holiday” We start this week with a chart newcomer and an American singer called Madonna Ciccone who gets her first UK top 40 entry with this track.
39. Rick Springfield – “Human Touch” Also getting his very first UK top 40 entry is Australian singer Rick Springfield, who released his debut back in 1971 and has been trying ever since!
38. Elvis Presley – “I Can Help” No such luck for Elvis this week. One week in the top thirty and that’s all for him as his slides eight places.
37. Eartha Kitt – “Where Is My Man?” Doing a little better is Eartha Kitt as she climbs two places in her second week on the UK singles chart.
36. Tracey Ullman – “Move Over Darling” Dropping fifteen places is comedian and singer Tracey Ullman after two months on the chart with this cover version.
35. Musical Youth – “Sixteen” Making a chart return for 1984 are Musical Youth who pass the dutchie on for a song about being sixteen this time.
34. The Alarm – “Where Were You Hiding When The Storm Broke? The Alarm are back for 1984 and with the follow up to their first top 40 charting single, “Sixty Eight Guns”.
33. Billy Joel – “Uptown Girl” Four months on and Billy Joel‘s former number one is still kicking about, but it takes a sharp drop of seventeen places this week.
32. UB40 – “Many Rivers To Cross” UB40 cross over the top twenty and thirty this week as they fall twelve places with their last release of 1983.
31. Matthew Wilder – “Break My Stride” We welcome American singer Matthew Wilder to the UK chart for the first time with this new entry, which is only his second single to come out.
30. Slade – “My Oh My” Slade’s Christmas effort drops nineteen places this week having crashed out of the top ten seven days ago.
29. Whitesnake – “Give Me More Time” Rock band Whitesnake are on the up, however, and a week later sees them up eleven places with their first release of the year.
28. Fiction Factory – “(Feels Like) Heaven” In a week of newcomers, next up it’s Scottish band Friction Factory who make their debut with only their second single release.
27. Tina Turner – “Let’s Stay Together” Ten weeks on and Tina Turner is staying together with the UK top 40 but she’s down ten places with her first solo UK chart hit.
26. Rod Stewart – “Sweet Surrender” Time is up for Rod Stewart as the third single from “Body Wishes” goes back three places and misses out on a top twenty placing.
25. The Flying Pickets – “Only You” The Christmas number one from The Flying Pickets takes another dive this week and drops fifteen places right out of the top ten.
24. Gloria Gaynor – “I Am What I Am” Gloria Gaynor latest climbs fourteen places and it becomes her highest charting single here since “I Will Survive” in 1978!
23. Cyndi Lauper – “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” We have another chart newbie and this time it’s another American singer called Cyndi Lauper who makes her UK debut with her debut single.
22. Culture Club – “Victims” Culture Club are down to one song on the chart this week and it’s down fifteen places as they exit the top ten.
21. Roland Rat Superstar – “Rat Rapping” While leaving the top twenty is Roland Rat Superstar with his first hit as he drops seven places having made it to No.14.
20. Eurythmics – “Here Comes The Rain Again” The Eurythmics start 1984 with a big new entry with the third single to come from their album, “Touch”.
19. Kool and The Gang – “Straight Ahead” Not looking straight ahead anymore are Kool and The Gang as they go down four places with the latest to come from their album, “In the Heart”.
18. Michael Jackson – “Thriller” Ten weeks on and Michael Jackson is still top twenty with the title track of his latest album, which is down six this week.
17. The Police – “King Of Pain” The Police return to the top twenty with their new entry from last week, which climbs fifteen places in its second.
16. China Crisis – “Wishful Thinking” Doing better than that are China Crisis as they go up twenty places, which makes them this week’s highest!
15. The Icicle Works – “Love Is A Wonderful Colour” Breathing more new colour into the top twenty this week are The Icicle Works with their top 40 debut, which is up thirteen places.
14. Paul Young – “Love Of The Common People” Week ten finds Paul Young leave the top ten with the love of the common people as he falls nine places.
13. Big Country – “Wonderland” Hitting back with a big new entry are Big Country as they start 1984 as they left 1983 with three top twenty releases.
12. The Thompson Twins – “Hold Me Now” Ten weeks gone and The Thompson Twins are also out of the top ten as they are down three with their third top ten charting single.
11. John Lennon – “Nobody Told Me” This week’s highest new entry comes from the late John Lennon and it’s with the first new track he recorded in 1980 that will come from the last album he ever recorded, which is being released in a few weeks time.
10. Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton – “Islands In The Stream” Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton remain top ten for another week as they fall two places with their Country duet.
9. Lionel Richie – “Running With The Night” Running all the way back to the UK top ten is Lionel Richie with a big climb of thirteen in his third week.
8. Billy Joel – “Tell Her About It” Going back the other way is Billy Joel’s other single on the UK top 40, which is down four places from number four.
7. Status Quo – “Marguerita Time” Taking their last swig of the top five are Status Quo as they too fall four places and away from the top spot.
6. Snowy White – “Bird Of Paradise” Snowy White continues to do really well with this track as he moves into the top ten with a climb of thirteen.
5. Shakin’ Stevens and Bonnie Tyler – “A Rockin’ Good Way” As do Shakin’ Stevens and Bonnie Tyler, who were last week’s highest new entry and they go up eight places.
4. Joe Fagin – “That’s Livin’ Alright” Chart newcomer Joe Fagin makes the leap in week two into the top ten with his theme from Auf Wiedersehen Pet, which is up fourteen places.
3. Howard Jones – “What Is Love?” Having reached the number two spot last week, Howard Jones takes a back seat and drops down one with his biggest hit so far.
2. Frankie Goes To Hollywood – “Relax” Taking over from his are Frankie Goes To Hollywood with last week’s highest climber, which rises four places on where they previously landed.
1. Paul McCartney – “Pipes Of Peace” Which means the other Beatle on the chart, Paul McCartney, stays at number one for a second week. But will he make it three in a row, or will FGTH, Joe Fagin, Shaky and Bonnie or someone else knock him off? There’s only one way to find out…
