UK Top 40 Singles Chart for Sunday 30th January 1994
So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 4pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 24th to Saturday 29th January 1994.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases. This week, thirty years ago, there were thirteen new entrys, five climbers and two non-movers! And it was announced like this…
40. Pauline Henry – “Can’t Take Your Love” We start with one of last weeks new entry’s going down ten places in former Chimes singer Pauline Henry‘s second week.
39. Ruby Turner – “Stay With Me Baby” Our first new entry comes from Ruby Turner, who was last in the top 40 back in 1987 with “I’d Rather Go Blind”. This one is a cover of a Lorraine Ellison song from 1966.
38. Phil Collins – “Everyday” Phil Collins makes it a month with the latest single from his album “Both Sides”, which falls seventeen places.
37. The Gin Blossoms – “Hey Jealousy” We welcome American group The Gin Blossoms to the UK top 40 this week. The band formed in 1989 and released their debut in 1992, from which this is the third single.
36. Hypergogo – “Raise” 1992 was the year Hypergogo went “High” and in 1994 they are back with “Raise”, ever determined to stay high(!)
35. Inspiral Carpets – “Saturn 5” The Inspiral Carpets fall ten places in their third week on the chart with this track. The band will release their next album in March.
34. Dina Carroll – “The Perfect Year” Nine weeks on and Dina Carroll is celebrating her most perfect year, 1993, but the song itself is also down ten places.
33. Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle – “A Whole New World” Also clocking up nine weeks are Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle with their theme from ‘Aladdin’ which drops seven places.
32. P.O.V. featuring Jade – “All Thru The Nite” Jade are back for a fourth UK top 40 chart entry after their debut in 1993 and this time it’s with American boyband P.O.V., who are Ewarner Mills, Hakim Bell, Lincoln DeVlugt and Marc Sherman.
31. Joe – “I’m In Luv” American solo artist Joe made it to the UK top 40 for the first time three weeks ago, but his debut is down nine places in week three.
30. Captain Hollywood Project – “Impossible” Want more and more of the Captain Hollywood Project? Well, here they are with the follow up and a new entry!
29. Slo-Moshun – “Bells of NY” Danny Weaver and Mark Archer are producers Slo-Moshun and they come to the top 40 for the first time with this new entry.
28. Depeche Mode – “In Your Room” Depeche Mode were last week’s highest climbers, but seven days later they take an almighty tumble of twenty places!
27. ZZ Top – “Pincushion” And the big new entry from ZZ Top last week, their first chart hit here since 1992, also takes a big drop of twelve places in its second week.
26. Bee Gees – “For Whom The Bell Tolls” The Bee Gees leave the top twenty this week after nine weeks there with their biggest hit for six years, which is down seven places.
25. Bass Bumpers – “The Music’s Got Me” Henning Reith, Caba Kroll, CJ Stone, George Dee, Akira Yamamoto and Reinhard Raith are all from Germany and they are the Bass Bumpers, and their music’s got them to the UK top 40 for the first time!
24. The Charlatans – “Can’t Get Out Of Bed” The Charlatans did that in 1990 and make a return in 1994 with the first track to come from what will be their third studio album, due out in two months time.
23. Joe Roberts – “Lover” Joe Roberts made his debut this time last week and climbs a healthy eleven places with his debut single.
22. Wendy Moten – “Come In Out Of The Rain” Making her UK debut this week is American singer Wendy Moten with a song that was recorded and released at home back in 1992.
21. Therapy? – “Nowhere” Therapy? are going nowhere in week two as their latest drops out of the top twenty and down three places.
20. Bitty Mclean – “Here I Stand” Bitty Mclean stays top twenty for another week but his seconds top ten charting single falls six places.
19. The Orb – “Perpetual Dawn” The Orb return in 1994 with this re-issue of a 1991 release that only made No.61 first time around. This time, they’ve done much better!
18. Rozalla – “I Love Music” Rozalla is back too for 1994 and this is her first big hit here since “Are You Ready to Fly?” in early 1992.
17. Bobby Brown and Whitney Houston – “Something In Common” Bobby and Whitney have not been able to do anything with this song since they arrived three weeks ago, but week three finds them down two places.
16. Eternal – “Save Our Love” Eternal are four places lower than previously they were with the second single to come from their debut album, which is called “Always And Forever”.
15. East 17 – “It’s Alright” Ten weeks on and East 17 get a tenth week in the upper half of the chart with their most successful release so far and it’s down just four places.
14. Garth Brooks – “The Red Strokes” Dropping down one is the first top twenty hit for American singer Garth Brooks, which is the third single from his current album, “In Pieces”.
13. Richard Marx – “Now And Forever” Richard Marx climbs four places with his brand news single. It’s Richard’s fourth to make the UK top twenty.
12. Deep Forest – “Sweet Lullaby” Time to relax and calm down with our next big new entry, which comes from French producer Michel Sanchez who calls himself Deep Forest with a song that was originally released in 1992.
11. Chaka Demus and Pliers – “Twist And Shout” The former number one from Chaka Demus and Pliers slips out of the top ten this week and down six places.
10. Haddaway – “I Miss You” Two months on and Haddaway is still riding high with his third single and stays top ten also staying in the same chart position as last week.
9. Red Hot Chilli Peppers – “Give It Away” American band the Red Hot Chilli Peppers are this week’s highest new entry and with it they also score their very first UK top ten hit!
8. Culture Beat – “Anything” Week four and Culture Beat are top ten with their third single to get this far but they are down two places.
7. Celine Dion – “The Power Of Love” Coming back to the top ten for a second time is Canadian singer Celine Dion with her cover of the Jennifer Rush song, which goes up thirteen and becomes this week’s highest climber.
6. Tori Amos – “Cornflake Girl” Meanwhile, Tori Amos drops out of the top five and down two places with her biggest hit here to date.
5. K7 – “Come Baby Come” And time has run out for K7, after over two months on the UK chart, his first hit here falls two places.
4. Enigma – “Return To Innocence” Last week’s highest new entry from Enigma returns him to the UK top five with only his second charting single here going up five places.
3. Bryan Adams, Rod Stewart and Sting – “All For Love” The three musketeers – Bryan, Rod and Sting – drop down one this week with their contribution to the latest version of the classic novel.
2. Toni Braxton – “Breathe Again” Moving up into the number two spot is Toni Braxton as her first UK hit goes up five places, which is now one place higher than her US peak!
1. D:Ream – “Things Can Only Get Better” But making it three in a row are D:Ream who stay number one as the biggest seller of all. But can they go a fourth, or will Toni Braxton, Enigma or someone else put a stop to their ‘things’? There’s only one way to find out…
