UK Top 40 Singles Chart for Sunday 25th October 1987

So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 5-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 19th to Saturday 24th October 1987.

This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week, there were eight new entrys, fourteen climbers and two non-movers! And it was announced like this…

40. Amazulu – “Mony Mony”
Not such a good second week for Amazulu with their version of “Mony Mony”, which drops two places and there’s another one coming up…

39. Cliff Richard – “Remember Me”
Cliff is back with the third single to come from his brand new album, “Always Guaranteed”, which follows “Some People” straight into the chart.

38. Whitesnake – “Here I Go Again”
Whitesnake get a new entry too with this re-issue that first came out here earlier this year but didn’t quite make the top 40. Second time around, it does!

37. Bryan Ferry – “The Right Stuff”
Roxy Music’s Bryan Ferry has a new solo album coming out next month and this is the lead single, which lands him a new entry as well this week.

36. The Christians – “When The Finger Points”
Like Amazulu, The Christians are suffering a two place drop in their second week on the chart with this track from their debut album.

35. Madonna – “Causing A Commotion”
While Madonna is down seven places in her seventh week on the UK chart with the second single from her most recent film, ‘Who’s That Girl?’.

34. Living In A Box featuring Bobby Womack – “So The Story Goes”
One group bucking the trend of going down in week two are Living In A Box. Their latest with American singer Bobby Womack goes up three places.

33. Steve Winwood – “Valerie ’87”
Steve Winwood‘s updated version of his 1982 single falls eight places this week, taken from his best of, “Chronicles“, which is out now.

32. Heartbeat – “Tears From Heaven”
We welcome Scottish band Heartbeat to the UK top 40 for the very first time with this new entry. The band formed in 1981 and have released three studio albums and a number of singles, but none have made it this far as yet.

31. The Cure – “Just Like Heaven”
The latest single from The Cure goes down two places and drops out of the top thirty this week after three weeks on the chart.

30. Scarlet Fantastic – “No Memory”
Duo Scarlet Fantastic came into the top 40 for the very first time last week with this song, which goes up just one place, one week later.

29. LL Cool J – “I Need Love”
LL Cool J’s first UK chart hit has been about for seven weeks now and leaves the top twenty, going down, thirteen places.

28. Rick Astley – “Never Gonna Give You Up”
The former number one from Rick Astley is still with us and drops just six places this week and there’s always that follow up due very, very soon…!

27. Michael Jackson – “Bad”
The title track from Jacko’s current album is down seven places and out of the top twenty as the album now surpasses Double Platinum status here.

26. The Style Council – “Wanted”
Mick and Paul are back in the chart this week with a new entry and it’s with the third single from their album, “The Cost Of Loving”, but only the second to make it this far.

25. The Eurythmics – “Beethoven (I Love To Listen To)”
Another UK duo next, this time Annie and Dave with their brand new single, which is up five places after their new entry last week.

24. The Alarm – “Rain In The Summertime”
Not such good news for The Alarm’s new single, which after two weeks in the upper half of the chart, leaves and falls six places.

23. Five Star – “Strong As Steel”
Joining them are Five Star with the second single from their current album, which is down just four places in its fourth week on the chart.

22. George Harrison – “Got My Mind Set On You”
Former Beatle George Harrison is back in the UK singles chart for the first time in six years and it’s with the first track from his brand new album, which is out in two weeks time.

21. Steve Walsh – “I Found Lovin'”
Both Steve Walsh and The Fatback band have found lovin’ but while the latter stay in the top twenty, the former leaves, down seven places this week.

20. Terence Trent D’Arby – “Dance Little Sister”
Terence Trent D’Arby is back in the top twenty for the third time with his third single this week as he climbs a further three places!

19. T’Pau – “China In Your Hand”
We lose T’Pau‘s “Heart And Soul” this week but it is replaced by another song and a big new entry for the band, straight into the top twenty and hoping for a second top ten hit next week, perhaps…

18. Los Lobos – “Come On Let’s Go”
Also returning to the UK top twenty for a second time are Los Lobos with another track from the ‘La Bamba’ soundtrack, which is up three places this week.

17. The Fatback Band – “I Found Lovin'”
The other “I Found Lovin'”, from the Fatback Band, stays top twenty but down eight places as they leave the UK top ten.

16. MARRS – “Pump Up The Volume”
Doing the same are the men from MARRS with their former chart topper, which is down ten places, as they make their return to earth.

15. Ray Parker Jnr. – “I Don’t Think That Man Should Sleep Alone”
There are two joint high climbers this week of nine places and Ray Parker Jnr. is one of them as he makes his return to the UK top twenty for only the second time in his career so far.

14. UB40 – “Maybe Tomorrow”
Going up one place are UB40 with the first brand new track from their new best of compilation, which is titled “The Best Of UB40 – volume 1”.

13. Jellybean featuring Steven Dante – “The Real Thing”
The real thing they may be, but producer Jellybean and singer Steven Dante seem to like it here as their joint collaboration hold on to the same position for a third consecutive week!

12. Abigail Mead and Nigel Goulding – “Full Metal Jacket (I Wanna Be Your Drill Instructor)”
Not a good week for composers Abigail Mead and Nigel Goulding, who drop likes flies, nine places, out of the top three and the top ten altogether!

11. Rick Astley – “Whenever You Need Somebody”
…and here he is again! Rick‘s back with the follow up to his recent number one and it’s with a new recording of a Stock Aitken Waterman song from two years ago, previously recorded by American singer, O’Chi Brown. He does much better than the original achieved, as it bags him this week’s highest new entry!

10. Was Not Was – “Walk The Dinosaur”
American band Was Not Was walked their dinosaur into the UK top twenty for the very first time three week ago and by moving up two places, they enter the UK top ten this week.

9. Kiss – “Crazy Crazy Nights”
American rock group Kiss recorded their biggest UK chart hit last week with this song, but sadly they drop down five places in their fifth week on the chart.

8. Pet Shop Boys – “Rent”
This week’s other joint highest climber of nine places goes to the Pet Shop Boys, who take their third single of this year into the top ten to give them three top ten hits from one album.

7. Billy Idol – “Mony Mony”
The other “Mony Mony” keeps going from strength to strength for Billy Idol, who is up one more place this week, clearly the most favoured of the two recordings.

6. Erasure – “The Circus”
Also going up one more place are Erasure with the title track of their current album, and, like the Pet Shop Boys, the third top ten hit from one album.

5. Fleetwood Mac – “Little Lies”
Fleetwood Mac win their second top ten hit from the “Tango In The Night” album this week as they are up six places and better “Big Love’s” number nine high earlier this year.

4. Jan Hammer – “Crockett’s Theme”
Composer Jan Hammer has been climbing the chart for six weeks now with the second piece of music from the Miami Vice TV series. It went into second place last week, but goes two lower, this week.

3. Bananarama – “Love In The First Degree”
Last week’s highest climber saw Bananarama shoot into the top ten for the first time since last Summer. This week they go up two more places and register their highest chart position since “Robert De Niro’s Waiting” at the beginning of 1984!

2. George Michael – “Faith”
Meanwhile, last week’s highest new entry came from George Michael with what will be the title track of his debut solo LP. He leaps over them all with a climb of eight places, looking for his second chart topper of the year, next week…

1. Bee Gees – “You Win Again”
But for this week, it’s the Bee Gees that own that title as they stay top of the lot for a third week with their biggest seller for a decade. But can they keep it for a whole month, or will George Michael or even Bananarama stop them from doing so? There’s only one way to find out…
