WHERE ARE THEY NOW? Vikki (Watson)

Love is…for Vikki Watson, it was representing the UK in the Eurovision Song Contest

The 1980’s for the United Kingdom in the Eurovision Song Contest had been pretty fruitful. Third place at the beginning of the decade, a win in 1981 and a top ten placing for those that followed Bucks Fizz. Bardo came 7th in 1982 and Belle and The Devotions also came 7th in 1984, but no top five finishes since “Making Your Mind Up”. The country therefore put great hope in it’s artist for 1985, an unknown singer by the name of Aeone Victoria Watson (b. London, 1959). Titled ‘Vikki’, Watson co-wrote her entry, “Love Is”, only the second artist to do so, and having gathered support back home, off to Gothenburg she went…

A strong performance late in the schedule perhaps helped the memory of “Love Is” and although the UK did not win this time, the song came in fourth with 100 points, the best since Bucks Fizz’s win four years earlier. Although “Love Is” was well received over in Sweden, the same could not be said for the British music buying public who only bought enough copies to take the song to No.49 in the singles chart, the first Eurovision entry not to make the top 40 since Prima Donna’s “Love Enough For Two” in 1980. ‘Vikki’ never followed up on “Love Is” or a pop career and instead moved to Los Angeles where she records Folk/New Age music under the name of Aeone. That’s what love is!
