UK Top 40 Singles Chart for 21st July 1985

So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Richard Skinner broadcast from 4pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales.

This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week there were six new entrys, thirteen climbers and one non-mover! And it was announced like this…

40. OMD – “Secret”
We kick off with a new entry from OMD and the second single to come from their new album called “Crush”, which was released last month.

39. The Damned – “The Shadow Of Love”
Meanwhile, The Damned fall fourteen places with their second top 40 hit of this year, which has been about for six weeks now.

38. Gary Moore – “Empty Rooms”
Gary Moore comes back having been out in the fields with Phil Lynott and in the top five. This new entry finds him back on his own.

37. Maze featuring Frankie Beverly – “Too Many Games”
There’s a new entry next and a UK top 40 debut for American group Maze, who released their first single back in 1977, but with lead singer Frankie Beverly, they finally make it today.

36. Arrow – “Long Time”
That also goes for Alphonsus Cassell who calls himself Arrow and after a number of singles since 1973, he too makes the top 40 for the very first time.

35. The Cure – “In Between Days”
British band The Cure come back to the chart for the first time this year with something new and a new album which is out at the end of next month.

34. Duran Duran – “A View To A Kill”
Duran Duran register an eleventh week on the top 40 with their Bond theme, which drops just one place and out of the fire.

33. Glenn Frey – “Smugglers Blues”
Glenn Frey also stays top 40 with his latest, which goes down seven places with seven weeks on the UK chart this time.

32. Animal Nightlife – “Love Is Just The Great Pretender”
…Be that as it may, but it doesn’t do much for Animal Nightlife, who go down four places after just one week in the top thirty.

31. Billy Ocean – “Suddenly”
Following them but taking a bigger hit of eleven places is Billy Ocean with his latest, now with three months in the top 40.

30. Feargal Sharkey – “Loving You”
Feargal Sharkey moves up into the top thirty this week, but only just. A climb of one place brings him up in his third week.

29. Mai Tai – “History”
Mai Tai have been about for ten weeks with this song, but they could be history next week as it drops twelve places.

28. Marillion – “Kayleigh”
Goes down seven this week are Marillion with their biggest chart hit yet, which like the Duran boys, registers eleven weeks.

27. Howard Jones – “Life In One Day”
Howard Jones did get to spend more than one week in the top twenty with this song, which falls five places in its fifth week.

26. Dead Or Alive – “In Too Deep”
Leaving the top twenty this week are former chart toppers Dead Or Alive with their third hit of this year and they do down ten places.

25. Marti Webb – “Ben”
For Marti Webb it’s a big slide for her cover of Michael Jackson’s song, as she leaves the top ten and tumbles fifteen places.

24. Tears For Fears – “Head Of Heels”
Which means she falls head over heels over Tears For Fears, who also leave the upper half of the chart and down ten places.

23. The Pointer Sisters – “Dare Me”
The new single form The Pointer Sisters arrived last week and they enjoy a great second as the new song climbs fifteen places.

22. Five Star – “Let Me Be The One”
As do Five Star with their second top 40 single, which aims to follow “All Fall Down” to the top twenty with an impressive climb of eighteen places.

21. Steve Arrington – “Dancin’ Is The Key Of Life”
Steve Arrington edges just a little bit closer to another top twenty hit for him as his latest moves up just two places.

20. Russ Abbot – “All Night Holiday”
Russ Abbot goes up five this week to put him back in the top twenty for the second time this year with the follow up to “Atmosphere”.

19. The Cult – “She Sells Sanctuary”
She may sell sanctuary but The Cult fail to sell enough to take them higher with their first chart hit which is a non-mover.

18. Billy Idol – “White Wedding”
Good news for Billy Idol, who was last week’s highest new entry with this brand new song, as he climbs sixteen places!

17. The Conway Brothers – “Turn It Up”
Anything but for The Conway Brothers as they turn things down and go down six places having spent the past five weeks climbing.

16. Fine Young Cannibals – “Johnny Come Home”
The Fine Young Cannibals are on their way home with Johnny as they depart the top ten and fall seven places with their very first chart hit.

15. Dire Straits – “Money For Nothing”
Meanwhile, going the other way are Dire Straits with their latest, which gives them a second top twenty hit this year and a much higher one as they go up a whopping twenty four places…but it’s not the highest!

14. Simply Red – “Money’s Too Tight To Mention”
Sadly for Simply Red their debut single slips back one place after a gallant attempt. The group are putting the final touches to their debut album which should be out later this year.

13. The Cool Notes – “In Your Car”
Overtaking Simply Red are The Cool Notes but in your car as they go up two places with the follow up to “Spend The Night”.

12. Bruce Springsteen – “Born In The USA”
The Americans keep coming and it’s the man who was born there next, Bruce Springsteen, who departs the UK top ten, down five places.

11. Tina Turner – “We Don’t Need Another Hero”
This week’s highest climber is an American, Ms Tina Turner in fact, with the song from the film which she co-stars in, ‘Mad Max 3’, and it goes up a massive twenty six places in one week!

10. Trans-X – “Living On Video”
From this weeks to last weeks and Trans-X make the leap to the top ten, up just eight places this week for the Canadian group.

9. Jaki Graham – “Round And Around”
Coming back to the top ten is Jaki Graham, although this time on her own as the follow up to her duet with David Grant climbs three.

8. Denise LaSalle – “My Toot Toot”
Denise LaSalle has to play on her toot toot a little bit less as her very first UK chart hit single drops back two places.

7. Opus – “Live Is Life”
While Austrian band Opus go up one more with their very first UK chart hit and a former number one in their home country.

6. Madonna – “Crazy for You”
Madonna just slips out of the top five this week, down one, with her ballad from the film ‘Vision Quest’, now with two months on the chart, and we may not have heard the last of her this week…

5. Kool and The Gang – “Cherish”
Finally making a move are Kool and The Gang who have been on hold for the past three weeks with this song, which goes down one place.

4. Madonna – “Into The Groove”
Here comes Madonna again and this time it’s with something new and the highest new entry this week! The song comes from her current album “Like A Virgin” and follows “Material Girl” earlier this year.

3. Harold Faltermeyer – “Axel F”
All the non-movers from the last three weeks are going down and that includes Harold Faltermeyer, down one with his theme from the film ‘Beverly Hills Cop‘.

2. Sister Sledge – “Frankie”
As are Sister Sledge, who have been number one for the past four weeks, but are so no longer with their biggest hit here.

1. Eurythmics – “There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart?)”
But going up two places are David and Annie of the Eurythmics, who bag their very first number one single on home territory! But can they keep it, or will Madonna claim her first number one this time next week? There’s only one way to find out…
