UK Top 40 Singles Chart for 28th July 1985

So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Richard Skinner broadcast from 5pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales.

This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week there were eight new entrys, fourteen climbers and NO non-movers! And it was announced like this…

40. Dead Or Alive – “In Too Deep”
We begin this week asking if they are Dead Or Alive. The answer is alive, but only just as the group’s latest falls fourteen places.

39. Go West – “Goodbye Girl”
Go West hit back with our first new entry this week. This is their third single and their third to make the top 40.

38. Phil Collins – “Take Me Home”
Also back is Phil Collins for the third time this year but only the second occasion on his own with the follow up to “Sussudio”.

37. Marti Webb – “Ben”
Marti Webb’s version of “Ben” has been about for nine weeks now, but this could be her last as the song drops twelve places.

36. Maze featuring Frankie Beverly – “Too Many Games”
Maze featuring Frankie Beverly arrived this time last week, but a week on and they can only climb one place with this track.

35. Amazulu – “Excitable”
We welcome British group Amazulu to the top 40 this week with a new entry. They have been releasing singles for two years, but this is the first to get this far.

34. OMD – “Secret”
Making a healthy climb of six places in their second week with us are OMD with the second single to come from their latest album, “Crush”.

33. Prince – “Raspberry Beret”
Prince is back from his walk in Paisley Park with the follow up as a new entry, This is also the second single from his current album, “Around The World In A Day”.

32. Madonna – “Holiday”
This week could be a Madonna top 40 as the American singer kicks off with this re-entry of a song originally released last year. And there are two more to come…!

31. Tears For Fears – “Head Over Heels”
Roland and Kurt of Tears For Fears have survived seven weeks on so far with this song, which goes down seven places this week.

30. Arrow – “Long Time”
Arrow turned up on last week’s top 40 with a new entry and a week on they climb six places to take them into the top thirty.

29. Gary Moore – “Empty Rooms”
As did Gary Moore with his latest track, which goes a bit further and up nine places to put him back in the top thirty.

28. The Conway Brothers – “Turn It Up”
Meanwhile, The Conway Brothers continue to turn it down with this number, which departs the top twenty and falls eleven places.

27. Feargal Sharkey – “Loving You”
Continuing his slow ascent of the chart is Feargal Sharkey. Week four sees him three places higher than he was at least.

26. Steve Arrington – “Dancin’ In The Key Of Life”
Sadly for Steve Arrington there will be no follow up to “Feel So Real” as his latest drops back five places and misses the upper half of the top 40.

25. Russ Abbot – “All Night Holiday”
And there was just one week in the top twenty for Russ Abbot this time. He went up and in last week and goes down five and out this week.

24. Fine Young Cannibals – “Johnny Come Home”
Still wanting Johnny to come home are the Fine Young Cannibals as they too leave the top twenty, down eight places in their eighth week.

23. Nik Kershaw – “Don Quixote”
Nik Kershaw follow up two top ten hits from his album “The Riddle” with this new entry and hopes for three in a row with it.

22. UB40 and Chrissie Hynde – “I Got You Babe”
UB40 return to the chart this week and they’ve brought The Pretenders Chrissie Hynde with them for this cover of the Sony and Cher number from the 1960’s.

21. Bruce Springsteen – “Glory Days”
While just above them is this week’s highest new entry from Bruce Springsteen with another track from his “Born In The USA” album and the title track itself yet to come!

20. The Cure – “In Between Days”
It’s been a very good week for The Cure. Their new single leaps up fifteen places, which is this week’s highest climber, and into the top twenty!

19. Bruce Springsteen – “Born In The USA”
Here comes this week’s highest new entrant again with the title track of his current LP. This Bruce Springsteen single falls seven places.

18. Five Star – “Let Me Be The One”
Five Star are aiming for their previous peak. This week they go up four places and put themselves just three away from where “All Fall Down” got to.

17. The Pointer Sisters – “Dare Me”
Do you dare The Pointer Sisters? Their brand new release joins the UK top twenty this week with a climb of six places.

16. Simply Red – “Money’s Too Tight To Mention”
The debut single from Simply Red peaked two weeks ago and went down one last week. Seven days later they go down two.

15. The Cult – “She Sells Sanctuary”
Good news, however, for The Cult. They had been non-movers with this reissue, but get moving again and go up four places.

14. The Cool Notes – “In Your Car”
While all The Cool Notes can do is reverse their car back one place having been in fifth gear for the last three weeks.

13. Denise LaSalle – “My Toot Toot”
maybe they can hear Denise LaSalle’s toot toot as she motors out of the top ten with her very first hit single here, down five places.

12. Madonna – “Crazy For You”
Here comes Madonna song number two. It’s her longest charting with nine weeks to its name so far and it leaves the top ten, down six places.

11. Billy Idol – “White Wedding”
Billy Idol is having a white wedding and his theme from it continues to be heard by all. This week he climbs seven places.

10. Jaki Graham – “Round And Around”
Jaki Graham has had enough of going round and round and instead goes down one place with her first solo top ten hit.

9. Trans-X – “Living On Video”
Doing a swap with Jaki are Trans-X who go up one place with their former highest climber as the song climbs to its highest peak yet.

8. Dire Straits – “Money For Nothing”
Dire Straits come into the top ten for the first time since “Private Investigations” in 1982. They go up seven places.

7. Kool and The Gang – “Cherish”
Kool and The Gang have now been on the chart for three months with this song and they are still top ten, but down two places.

6. Opus – “Live Is Life”
Meanwhile Austrian band Opus have been about for eight weeks now with this track and are still climbing. This week finds them one place higher.

5. Harold Faltermeyer – “Axel F”
Composer Harold Faltermeyer remains top five for a sixth week with this theme from the film ‘Beverly Hills Cop‘, which is down two places.

4. Sister Sledge – “Frankie”
Also down two is the former number one from Sister Sledge. The ladies celebrate their tenth week on the UK top 40 still top five.

3. Tina Turner – “We Don’t Need Another Hero”
Rocketing into the top three is last week’s highest climber from Tina Turner and her latest film ‘Mad Max 3’, which goes up eight places.

2. Eurythmics – “There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart)”
Sadly after just one week on top, the Eurythmics drop down one place with their very first chart topping single after just seven days.

1. Madonna – “Into The Groove”
So we have a new number one and it’s another first as American singer Madonna‘s highest new entry of last week goes up three places to give the singer her very first UK chart topper! But like the Eurythmics, can she stay there a second, or will Tina Turner or someone else put themselves in pole position? There’s only one way to find out…
