UK Top 40 Singles Chart for 4th August 1985
So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Richard Skinner broadcast from 5pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases. This week there were four new entrys, thirteen climbers and three non-movers! And it was announced like this…
40. D Train – “You’re The One For Me” American duo D Train kick off the new entries this week with a remix of their debut single from 1981 which got to No.30 back then. Can this version go any higher?
39. Lisa Lisa and The Cult Jam – “I Wonder If I Take You Home” Next up is a chart debut and a debut single charting for American group Lisa Lisa and The Cult Jam. The group consist of Lisa Velex, Alex Moseley and Mike Hughes.
38. Russ Abbot – “All Night Holiday” Russ Abbot’s all night holiday is coming to an end as he falls thirteen places. His latest has been on the chart for six weeks.
37. OMD – “Secret” OMD went up last week with their latest but come back down again, three places, missing out on a top thirty position this time.
36. Maze featuring Frankie Beverly – “Too Many Games” Maze don’t seem to have played enough games or sold enough records as their latest UK chart hit is a non-mover for a second week.
35. Arrow – “Long Time” Is five weeks a long time for Arrow? Well, their latest release could be out after five as it goes down five places in week five.
34. Steve Arrington – “Dancin’ In The Key Of Life” Steve Arrington’s latest has been about for six weeks now and it falls eight places out of the top thirty where its been for four of them.
33. Fine Young Cannibals – “Johnny Come Home” The Fine Young Cannibals have been on for ten weeks with their debut single, which could be their last as they go down nine.
32. The Cars – “Drive” American band The Cars make a return to the UK top 40 this week for the first time in three years with this track which is the third single to come from their latest album.
31. Princess – “Say I’m Your Number One” While this week’s highest new entry is just above and it’s a chart debut for British singer Princess with a song from Hazell Dean and Dead Or Alive producers Stock Aitken Waterman.
30. Go West – “Goodbye Girl” Go West are on the move with their third single. Their new entry of last week goes up nine places and into the top thirty.
29. Bruce Springsteen – “Born In The USA” The man with two singles on the chart, Bruce Springsteen, still does and his oldest has been about for nine weeks now and is down ten places.
28. Phil Collins – “Take Me Home” The latest from Phil Collins goes up ten places in its second week on the chart. His previous two this year made the top twenty, so will this…?
27. Prince – “Raspberry Beret” Prince is going up again this week. Six places higher for his latest, the follow up to “Paisley Park”, which went top twenty here.
26. Feargal Sharkey – “Loving You” Once again, Feargal Sharkey is going up in little moves. This week finds him one place higher, six weeks after joining the chart.
25. Amazulu – “Excitable” Something for Amazulu to get excited about is their very first top 40 charting single going up ten places in its second week!
24. Simply Red – “Money’s Too Tight To Mention” The debut single from Simply Red departs the upper half of the chart this week, down eight for them after four weeks there.
23. Gary Moore – “Empty Rooms” Gary Moore enjoys an even better week three with his latest, which goes up six places. The song is much higher than when it came out over a year ago.
22. The Pointer Sisters – “Dare Me” The Pointer Sisters dared to go top twenty last week but it was just for one week as they drop out and down five places.
21. Five Star – “Let Me Be The One” And the same goes for Five Star, it’s one week in and one out for their latest which drops three places. All fall down!
20. The Cool Notes – “In Your Car” The Cool Notes want to remain in your car and the top twenty this week and they succeed, but only just as their song goes down six places.
19. The Cult – “She Sells Sanctuary” Bad luck for The Cult as they go down four places and back to where they were two weeks ago before they went up four places!
18. Denise LaSalle – “My Toot Toot” Ringing her toot toot next is Denise LaSalle, who drops five places with her very first UK top 40 charting single after more than twenty years of trying.
17. Bruce Springsteen – “Glory Days” Here comes Bruce Springsteen again. his latest was last week’s highest new entry and it goes up four to join his others that have made the UK top twenty.
16. The Cure – “In Between Days” Meanwhile, last week’s highest climber came form The Cure, with their brand new track and they go higher still with a climb of four places.
15. Madonna – “Crazy For You” Going one better than Bruce Springsteen is Madonna, who has THREE singles on the chart. This is the oldest of them and with ten weeks, it falls just three places.
14. Jaki Graham – “Round And Around” Leaving the top ten is Jaki Graham, down four places and around with her latest. Jaki will release her debut album next month.
13. Trans-X – “Living On Video” Trans-X no longer live on video or in the top ten as they also fall four and out with the remix of their debut single from 1983.
12. Harold Faltermeyer – “Axel F” Taking a big drop of seven and out this week is Harold Faltermeyer with his instrumental track from the film ‘Beverly Hills Cop‘.
11. Nik Kershaw – “Don Quixote” Leaping over them all is Nik Kershaw with his new entry from last week, which climbs twelve places with the hope of a third top ten hit from his album next week.
10. Sister Sledge – “Frankie” Will we remember Sister Sledge when they are gone? Their former number one is down six places this week, three months on from their arrival.
9. Opus – “Live Is Life” Life is over for now for Opus as the Austrian band, who have been climbing for eight weeks with this track, go down three.
8. Kool and The Gang – “Cherish” Kool and The Gang are going down again, just one for them this week. This is now their longest UK chart run with one song.
7. UB40 and Chrissie Hynde – “I Got You Babe” UB40 and Chrissie Hynde arrived on the scene last week with their version of this Sonny and Cher number and take it top five seven days on with a big leap of fifteen places.
6. Billy Idol – “White Wedding” Billy Idol is still celebrating his ‘white wedding’ and the song continues to climb ever higher. This week he’s up five places.
5. Madonna – “Holiday” Madonna song number two is her new entry of last week, this re-issued single from last year, which makes a whopping climb of twenty seven places to be, by far, this week’s highest!
4. Dire Straits – “Money For Nothing” Dire Straits are back in the top five for the first time in three years this week as they go up four places with the biggest hit yet from their current album.
3. Tina Turner – “We Don’t Need Another Hero” There’s no change for Tina Turner this week, a second week in third place for the song she sings in the film she stars in!
2. Eurythmics – “There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart)” And there’s no change for the former number one from the Eurythmics, who left the top spot last week and get a second in second place.
1. Madonna – “Into The Groove” Which also goes for Madonna single number three, which gets a second week on top for the Queen of the UK top 40! But will she be there next week, or will Dire Straits, Billy Joel or even Madonna herself out a stop to that? There’s only one way to find out…
