UK Top 40 Singles Chart for 25th August 1985
So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Richard Skinner broadcast from 5pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases. This week there were seven new entrys, thirteen climbers and one non-movers! And it was announced like this…
40. Bananarama – “Do Not Disturb” We welcome back Bananarama to the chart this week with a new entry and something new. It was last Spring that we heard Sara, Siobhan and Keren with “Rough Justice”.
39. Bryan Ferry – “Don’t Stop The Dance” Bryan Ferry is back this week with the follow up to his big top ten hit “Slave To Love”. This is the second single from his album “Boys And Girls”.
38. Gary Moore – “Empty Rooms” Meanwhile, Gary Moore drops nine places with the re-boot of his earlier track, which has been top 40 for six weeks this time.
37. Rebecca Storm – “The Show” British actress Rebecca Storm makes her chart debut this week with the theme from a new TV series called Connie that stars Stephanie Beacham.
36. Prince – “Raspberry Beret” Prince goes down ten this week with his latest, six weeks on from his chart entry with the follow up to “Paisley Park”.
35. Jaki Graham – “Round And Around” While Jaki Graham has been going round and around for ten weeks with this track, which falls five places to keep her in the top 40.
34. Bonnie Tyler – “Holding Out For A Hero” Bonnie Tyler come back this week with a new entry and a song that was originally released last year and which features on the soundtrack to the film ‘Footloose’.
33. Amii Stewart – “Knock On Wood” At the beginning of this year, Amii Stewart had enough friends to get her into the top twenty. This is the follow up and it puts her back in the UK top 40.
32. Sister Sledge – “Frankie” The former number one from Sister Sledge survives another week in the top 40. They fall eleven places in their fourteenth week on the chart.
31. Madonna – “Crazy For You” Madonna still has three songs on the chart, this is the oldest and it drops seven places in week thirteen. But could it be the songs last?
30. Madness – “Yesterday’s Men” Madness kick off the top thirty with a new entry and a brand new song which is the lead from their upcoming sixth studio album due towards the end of September.
29. Five Star – “Let Me Be The One” Down just two places this week are Five Star with their second top 40 hit. This comes from their debut album which is called “Luxury Of Life”.
28. The Cure – “In Between Days” The Cure will release their new album next week. It’s called “The Head On The Door” and this is the lead single from it which goes down eight places.
27. Go West – “Goodbye Girl” Sadly for Go West, there will be no third top twenty hit as the follow up to “Call Me” and “We Close Our Eyes” drops back two places.
26. Dio – “Rock’N’Roll Children” American band Dio go up six this week into the top thirty for the very first time here in the UK with the first single from their current album.
25. Harold Faltermeyer – “Axel F” “Axel F” has been around for four months now! Count all the weeks… And Harold Faltermeyer is still top thirty, and down just two places.
24. Opus – “Live Is Life” Opus can boast of three months on the chart with this big Euro anthem and they too are top thirty, down eight places.
23. Marc Almond – “Stories Of Johnny” The new solo single from Marc Almond joined us last week and he enjoys a good second week with a climb of eleven places.
22. The Thompson Twins – “Don’t Mess With Dr. Dream” Our highest new entry sees the comeback of The Thompson Twins with new music and a new album on the way. This puts them back in the top 40 since “Lay Your Hands On Me” late last year.
21. Nik Kershaw – “Don Quixote” Nik Kershaw and Don Quixote together fall seven places and out of the top twenty this week. His album “The Riddle” is now Platinum certified!
20. Kool and The Gang – “Cherish” Kool and The Gang fall just two places this week, that keeps them top twenty for a third month with this long lasting hit.
19. Phil Collins – “Take Me Home” Phil Collins finally made it into the upper half of the chart with this song last week, but seven days on and it fails to go anywhere at all and is a non-mover.
18. Mai Tai – “Body And Soul” Making their return to the UK top twenty are Mai Tai with the follow up to “History”. Their new entry from last week shoots up eighteen places.
17. Total Contrast – “Takes A Little Time” British duo Total Contrast go up five places to put them in the top twenty for the very first time with their very first hit single.
16. Dan Hartman – “I Can Dream About You” Having a superb second week on the chart is Dan Hartman. His first UK hit of the 1980’s storms up twenty four places, which makes it this week’s highest by far!
15. D Train – “You’re The One For Me” D Train continue their ascent of the top 40 and this week finds them two places higher that before with the remix of their debut single.
14. Eurythmics – “There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart)” The former chart topper from the Eurythmics leaves the top ten as they drop five places and out after seven weeks there.
13. Amazulu – “Excitable” Nothing for Amazulu to get excited about this week as their very first top 40 hit slips back one place and looks like it has peaked.
12. Lisa Lisa and The Cult Jam – “I Wonder If I Take You Home” Going up three are Lisa Lisa and The Cult Jam along with the Full Force with their very first UK top 40 charting single.
11. Billy Idol – “White Wedding” While Billy Idol just drops out of the top ten and down three places with his first really big hit of his career since he released his debut single back in 1981.
10. Tina Turner – “We Don’t Need Another Hero” Also down three but staying in the top ten is Tina Turner with the main song from her film ‘Mad Max 3’ and her first top ten hit here since “What’s Love Got To Do With It?”.
9. King – “Alone Without You” King are back in the top ten for the second time this year as their highest climber of last week moves up four places.
8. Dire Straits – “Money For Nothing” Falling two this week are Dire Straits with their first top ten hit of this year but the second single from their latest album.
7. Princess – “Say I’m Your Number One” She wants to be number one and a climb of three places puts Princess ever closer to her goal of being the crowned chart topper.
6. Madonna – “Holiday” Madonna‘s holiday in the top five comes to an end as her re-issue from last year falls three places, the second highest of the three songs she has on the chart.
5. Baltimora – “Tarzan Boy” The novelty of Baltimora appears to be gaining more attention as they go up six places and into the UK top five in one week.
4. The Cars – “Drive” Driving up one this week are The Cars with this former highest climber as they drive ever closer to the very top of the chart.
3. Kate Bush – “Running Up That Hill” Also up one and even closer to the top spot is Kate Bush with her brand new single. Kate will release her new album next month.
2. Madonna – “Into The Groove” All three of Madonna‘s singles are going down this week and that includes this former number one. After four weeks on top, she’s down one.
1. UB40 and Chrissie Hynde – “I Got You Babe” Which means we have a new number one and it’s back to the top for this song eighteen years on from when the original topped the chart as UB40 and Chrissie Hynde go up one to claim the biggest seller of all. But can they make it a second, or will Kate Bush, The Cars or Baltimora stop them? There’s only one way to find out…
