UK Top 40 Singles Chart for 1st September 1985

So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Richard Skinner broadcast from 5pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from.

This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week there were six new entrys, eleven climbers and one non-mover. And it was announced like this…

40. Five Star – “Let Me Be The One”
Five Star cling on for another week with this single, eight weeks in and they are down eleven places to take them to the very bottom.

39. The Cure – “In Between Days”
The Cure have been about for one week less than Five Star and they also remain top 40 and also down eleven with this number.

38. Maria Vidal – “Body Rock”
Our first new entry is a UK chart debut for American singer Maria Vidal, who recorded her first song in 1979 but is now working on a full album of material.

37. Go West – “Goodbye Girl”
Could this be goodbye for now for Go West? Six weeks so far for the duo and their third single, which falls ten places.

36. Harold Faltermeyer – “Axel F”
And could this also be goodby for Harold Faltermeyer after eighteen weeks on the chart?! His instrumental from the ‘Beverly Hills Cop‘ film is down eleven places.

35. Dio – “Rock’N’Roll Children”
Sadly for American band Dio they are also falling with their latest effort, which leaves the top thirty, down nine places.

34. Bananarama – “Do Not Disturb”
Bananarama don’t want to be disturbed so long as they continue to climb the chart and in week two they go up six places with their brand new single.

33. Opus – “Live Is Life”
Fourteen weeks on the chart for Opus with this lifelong tune, but could this be their last for now as it drops nine places?

32. Nik Kershaw – “Don Quixote”
While Nik Kershaw amasses six weeks with his latest single from the album “The Riddle” and it could be his last for now as he falls eleven.

31. Huey Lewis and The News – “The Power Of Love”
American group Huey Lewis and The News were last in the top 40 here in 1982 with “Do You Believe In Love?”. With a little help from a new film called ‘Back To The Future’, they ‘power’ back with all the love they have!

30. Kool and The Gang – “Cherish”
There are a number of long stays on the top 40 this week on their way out and Kool and The Gang are another of them with eighteen weeks so far and down ten places.

29. Phil Collins – “Take Me Home”
Phil Collins is in the single digit category with seven weeks with this track which is also down ten and out of the top twenty.

28. Rebecca Storm – “The Show”
Rebecca Storm’s theme from the TV series Connie joined the chart last week and both are doing weel as the song climbs nine places.

27. Marc Almond – “Stories Of Johnny”
Alas for Soft Cell’s Marc Almond, his very first solo top 40 charting single falls back four places in its third week.

26. Bryan Ferry – “Don’t Stop The Dance”
Whatever you do…Bryan Ferry will have something to say about it as his second hit of this year goes up thirteen places.

25. Eurythmics – “There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart)”
The very first number one for the Eurythmics reaches ten weeks on the chart this week as they leave the top twenty, down eleven places.

24. Total Contrast – “Takes A Little Time”
And after just one week there, it’s down and out for the Total Contrast boys as their very first hit falls seven places.

23. Marillion – “Lavender”
Marillion are back with a new entry and the follow up to their massive top three hit “Kayleigh” just a few months ago.

22. Amazulu – “Excitable”
There’s nothing more to get excited about for Amazulu as they leave the upper half of the top 40 with their first hit single, which is down nine.

21. Madness – “Yesterdays’ Men”
Proving they are anything but yesterday’s men, the brand new one from Madness climbs nine places to put them within reach of the top twenty next week.

20. Stevie Wonder – “Part Time Lover”
We kick off the top twenty with a big new entry for Stevie Wonder and something new from him as he prepares to release a brand new album later this month.

19. D Train – “You’re The One For Me”
While D Train terminate and begin their journey back with this remixed track, which falls four places after six weeks on the chart.

18. Tina Turner – “We Don’t Need Another Hero”
Tina Turner falls eight in her eighth week on the chart and out of the top ten with the song from her film ‘Mad Max 3’.

17. Billy Idol – “White Wedding”
Down six goes Billy Idol with the re-issue of his 1982 single which featured on his self-titled debut album along with the single “Hot In The City”.

16. Amii Stewart – “Knock On Wood”
Amii Stewart returns to the top twenty for the second time this year as the follow up to “Friends” climbs a very healthy seventeen places.

15. The Thompson Twins – “Don’t Mess With Dr. Dream”
While last week’s highest new entry from The Thompson Twins goes up seven to put them back in the top twenty for the first time this year.

14. Madonna – “Holiday”
Madonna is reduced to just two songs on the chart this week. Her re-released single from last year leaves the top ten, down eight places.

13. Lisa Lisa and The Cult Jam – “I Wonder If I Take You Home”
Falling one place are Lisa Lisa and The Cult Jam with their very first UK chart hit, having made a steady climb for the past four weeks.

12. Dan Hartman – “I Can Dream About You”
Up four is last week’s massive highest climber from Dan Hartman as he claims his biggest hit since “Instant Replay” back in 1978.

11. Mai Tai – “Body And Soul”
Moving closer to another top ten hit are Mai Tai as their latest goes up seven places as they hope for an entry this time next week.

10. Bonnie Tyler – “Holding Out For A Hero”
It was a good idea to re-issue this single by Bonnie Tyler as week two finds her rocketing up twenty four places to make her this week’s highest climber!

9. Dire Straits – “Money For Nothing”
Down just one this week is the second single from the new Dire Straits album, which is already double Platinum certified after four months on release!

8. King – “Alone Without You”
While King go up one with their second top ten hit of this year. All their singles so far feature on their debut album, “Steps In Time”.

7. Princess – “Say I’m Your Number One”
Above a King comes a Princess – Desiree Heslop – but her debut single stops and goes no further towards her intended destination.

6. The Cars – “Drive”
Out of the top five this week are The Cars as they fall two places and away from the top spot with their biggest hit here of this decade.

5. Kate Bush – “Running Up The Hill”
Kate Bush has done enough running up the hill with her new song, which also falls two places and away from the peak of the mountain.

4. Madonna – “Into The Groove”
Down two as well for the former four week chart topper from Madonna and the latest to come from her album “Like A Virgin”.

3. Baltimora – “Tarzan Boy”
Swinging the other way are Baltimora as their tarzan boy takes them up two and into the top three and who knows where next…

2. UB40 and Chrissie Hynde – “I Got You Babe”
Just one week was all UB40 and Chrissie Hynde got on top with their version of the Sonny and Cher classic as drop one and return to the number two spot.

1. David Bowie and Mick Jagger – “Dancing In The Street”
So we have a new number one and a new entry, this weeks highest which sees two titans of the charts, David Bowie and Mick Jagger, join up for a cover of this song that was originally recorded by Martha and The Vandellas in 1964. That got to No.4 here, so the boys have bettered it in just one week! But can they keep it, or will someone else make them a one week number one? There’ only one way to find out…
