UK Top 40 Singles Chart for 15th September 1985

So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Richard Skinner broadcast from 5pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales.

This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week there were five new entrys, twelve climbers and three non-movers! And it was announced like this…

40. Blancmange – “What’s Your Problem?”
No living on the ceiling for Blancmange this week as their chart entry from seven days ago fails to make it any further and is a non-mover.

39. The Damned – “Is It A Dream?”
The Damned are our first new entry of this week with the third single to come from their current album, “Phantasmagoria”.

38. Five Star – “Love Take Over”
Five Star are also back for a third time this year with this new entry and once again it’s one out and one in for the quintet.

37. Total Contrast – “Takes A Little Time”
Meanwhile, the Total Contrast pair are down nine this week with their very first top 40 hit and hopefully it won’t be their last.

36. Jennifer Rush – “The Power Of Love”
It could get confusing as there are two songs with the same title on the top 40 and this new entry comes from American singer Jennifer Rush. Move over Huey Lewis…!

35. Cameo – “Single Life”
The new ‘single’ from Cameo makes its debut on the top 40 this week. and it’s the first for the group this year and the title track of their new album.

34. D Train – “You’re The One For Me”
D Train are getting ready to pull into the station where they started out from as the remix of their debut single falls ten places.

33. Madonna – “Holiday”
Madonna is back to having three songs on the chart and you’ll find out why a bit later on. For now, her holiday reaches eight weeks and is down ten places.

32. Tina Turner – “We Don’t Need Another Hero”
Tina Turner registers ten weeks on the UK chart with this song and she falls seven places having also starred in the film from which it comes.

31. Rene and Angela – “I’ll Be Good”
The new entry from US duo Rene and Angela last week is good for them both as they go up six places. Their fourth album together is called “Street Called Desire”.

30. Billy Idol – “White Wedding”
Billy Idol is outdone by Madonna this week but he still has two songs in the top thirty, this one has been around for ten weeks now and is down ten places.

29. Rebecca Storm – “The Show”
The show looks as if its over for Rebecca Storm as her theme from Connie goes down seven places and away from the top of the ratings list.

28. Colonel Abrams – “Trapped”
Colonel Abrams is no longer trapped in the top forty, he moves into the top thirty. Week two finds him going up six places.

27. Lloyd Cole and The Commotions – “Brand New Friend”
And that also goes for Lloyd Cole and The Commotions as they go up nine with their first top 40 single of 1985 and the first from their second album.

26. The Thompsons Twins – “Don’t Mess With Dr. Dream”
Not twins more a trio, The Thompsons Twins go down ten places with their brand new single, which will feature on their new album called “Here’s To Future Days”.

25. Billy Idol – “Rebel Yell”
Here comes Billy again. The second of his two songs on the chart is going up, thirteen places for him with this re-issue of a 1984 single.

24. Lisa Lisa and The Cult Jam – “I Wonder If I Take You Home”
Leaving the top twenty this week are Lisa Lisa and The Cult Jam with their first UK chart hit, which is down seven places.

23. Bryan Ferry – “Don’t Stop The Dance”
While Bryan Ferry misses out on another top twenty hit this year as the follow up to “Slave To Love” drops back two places.

22. Dan Hartman – “I Can Dream About You”
Dan Hartman has been there with this single, but not any longer as he falls seven and out after three weeks up and in there.

21. Dire Straits – “Money For Nothing”
Also down seven are Dire Straits with their biggest single since “Private Investigations” in 1982. The song has recently become their first number one Stateside.

20. Madness – “Yesterday’s Men”
Madness are yesterday’s men as their brand new track has peaked and drops back two places after four weeks on the chart.

19. King – “Alone Without You”
Falling eight places are King with their second top ten hit of this year. The band are currently completing their new album, due out at the end of the year.

18. Red Box – “Lean On Me”
Chart newcomers Red Box made their debut last week with this track and it seems we approve as they go up twelve places in their second.

17. Cliff Richard – “She’s So Beautiful”
No stranger to the chart is Cliff Richard. He turned up last week with this new recording and does even better going up sixteen places.

16. Maria Vidal – “Body Rock”
Moving into the UK top twenty is American singer Maria Vidal. Her third week sees her first UK top 40 single go up ten places.

15. Kate Bush – “Running Up That Hill”
Leaving the top ten this week, down seven, is Kate Bush. Her brand new album is called “Hounds Of Love” and it’s out tomorrow!

14. Princess – “Say I’m Your Number One”
Also down and out is Princess, still above King in the rankings, but down five, having clocked up two months on the chart so far.

13. The Cars – “Drive”
We have a new look top ten this week as the former residents keep leaving. The Cars drive out, having been non-movers last week, down seven places.

12. Madonna – “Into The Groove”
And out too for the former number one from Madonna. The second of her three singles on this weeks chart is down five.

11. Huey Lewis and The News – “The Power Of Love”
Here comes the other “Power Of Love”, the one from Huey Lewis and The News is the highest of the two and they are also up eight places.

10. Madonna – “Angel”
Here is Madonna single number three and it’s this week’s highest new entry as she returns to the top ten with another track from her album “Like A Virgin”.

9. Mai Tai – “Body And Soul”
Mai Tai peaked at No.8 with their last single “History” and with a climb of one this week, the follow up is only one away from their previous chart peak.

8. Midge Ure – “If I Was”
Ultravox’s Midge Ure was last week’s highest new entry and he improves on that with this week’s highest climber up twenty one places!

7. Amii Stewart – “Knock On Wood”
It’s been six years since Amii Stewart was last in the top ten, but her latest climbs five places to put her back for the first time since “Light My Fire”.

6. UB40 and Chrissie Hynde – “I Got You Babe”
UB40 and Chrissie Hynde‘s version of Sonny and Cher’s chart topper has also been a chart topper, but they go down three places in their eighth week.

5. Marillion – “Lavender”
Heading for another big top three hit are Marillion as the follow up to “Kayleigh” goes up eight places to put them back in the top ten.

4. Baltimora – “Tarzan Boy”
Holding on to fourth place this week are Baltimora having dropped down one with this big Euro hit as they get a fifth week in the top five.

3. Stevie Wonder – “Part Time Lover”
While Stevie Wonder goes up two with last week’s highest climber, edging towards his first number one since “I Just Called To Say I Love You”.

2. Bonnie Tyler – “Holding Out For A Hero”
Bonnie Tyler was hoping for a number one this week, but alas, she holds on to second place for a second week with her latest.

1. David Bowie and Mick Jagger – “Dancing In The Street”
Holding on to the number one spot for a third week are David Bowie and Mick Jagger with their version of the old Martha and The Vandellas song. Can they make it a fourth, or will Stevie Wonder, Marillion or someone else take it from them? There’s only one way to find out…
