UK Top 40 Singles Chart for 6th October 1985
So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Richard Skinner broadcast from 5pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases. This week there were eight new entrys, thirteen climbers and three non-movers! And it was announced like this…
40. Matt Bianco – “Yeh Yeh” Matt Bianco make a return to the top 40 this week with our first new entry, their first since “Half A Minute” a year ago.
39. Shakin’ Stevens – “Lipstick, Powder And Paint” Also back is Shakey with a new album and this first single from it, which is a cover of a 1956 song by Big Joe Turner. That got to No.12 so lets see if Shakey can do any better…
38. Tears For Fears – “I Believe” More returns and new entry’s as Tears For Fears are back with their fourth top 40 hit of this year that follows on from “Head Over Heels”.
37. Madonna – “Into The Groove” The former number one from Madonna drops eight places this week, her twelfth on the chart with her biggest UK hit to date.
36. Depeche Mode – “It’s Called A Heart” Dropping out of the top twenty are Depeche Mode as their latest slides eighteen places having only just moved there last week!
35. UB40 and Chrissie Hynde – “I Got You Babe” Clocking up eleven weeks is the song that succeeded Madonna to the top from UB40 and Chrissie Hynde as they go down ten places.
34. The Clash – “This Is England” In a week of returns, The Clash get a new entry in the top 40 with something new. The song is their first since “Should I Stay Or Should I Go?” in 1982.
33. Grace Jones – “Slave To The Rhythm” Grace Jones starred in this years Bond film ‘A View To A Kill’ and now she’s back in the music charts with a new entry and also with a brand new tune.
32. Dead Or Alive – “My Heart Goes Bang (Get Me To The Doctor)” Going bang already are Dead Or Alive as their latest fails to make the top twenty and falls nine places! Someone call a doctor…!
31. Level 42 – “Something About You” Going up a level are Level 42 with their brand new song, which joined the chart last week and goes up eight places in its second.
30. Jan Hammer – “Theme From Miami Vice” Composer Jan Hammer has written the theme to the latest big American TV series Miami Vice, which stars Don Johnson and he brings it to the UK singles chart this week.
29. Lloyd Cole and The Commotions – “Brand New Friend” It seems that Lloyd Cole and The Commotions have lost all their friends as their very first top twenty charting single leaves and falls ten places.
28. Baltimora – “Tarzan Boy” Following them are Baltimora, who go down twelve with their Summer top five smash. The Italian group released their first album, “Living In The Background”, last month.
27. Mai Tai – “Body And Soul” Down and out of the top twenty are Dutch group Mai Tai with their latest, after five weeks there, they are also down twelve.
26. The Cult – “Rain” Making their way back to the top twenty are The Cult with the follow up to “She Sells Sanctuary”, which climbs five places.
25. Five Star – “Love Take Over” And Five Star go up just three this week, heading closer for a third top twenty hit, but still five away from where their last two made.
24. The Cure – “Close To Me” Not going anywhere at all are The Cure, who become non-movers this week with the second single from their current album, “The Head On The Door”.
23. The Smiths – “The Boy With The Thorn In His Side” Meanwhile, another British band, The Smiths, go up three places with their brand new single, which charted this time last week.
22. Rene and Angela – “I’ll Be Good” It’s taken Rene and Angela six weeks to get this far, but this is as far as they can manage for now as they are non-movers in the same spot for a second week.
21. Amii Stewart – “Knock On Wood” Just dropping out of the upper half of the UK chart is Amii Stewart with the biggest of her two singles released this year, which goes down seven places.
20. Madonna – “Gambler” Madonna keeps em coming and she gets a new entry this week, which means she is back to having the songs in the UK top 40 once again!
19. Iron Maiden – “Running Free” (Live) Meanwhile, last week’s highest new entry was this live version of Iron Maiden’s debut single and it goes up one place.
18. The Style Council – “The Lodgers” Going the other way are The Style Council as they latest single falls five places after entering the top twenty last week.
17. Cliff Richard – “She’s So Beautiful” Cliff Richard went back up last week but at least he doesn’t go back down again, instead, he’s a non-mover with his new single.
16. Cameo – “Single Life” American group Cameo move into the UK top twenty this week, up five places in their fifth week on the chart with this song.
15. Huey Lewis and The News – “The Power Of Love” Both Cliff and Huey Lewis and The News went back up the chart last week, but unlike Cliff, the boys go down this week by four places.
14. a-ha – “Take On Me” Norwegian band a-ha made their UK chart debut last week and seven days on they are really going for it with a climb of twenty two places, they are this week’s highest!
13. Marillion – “Lavender” Marillion leave the top ten with their latest, which goes down four places. The track forms part of a suite on the band’s album “Misplaced Childhood”.
12. Simple Minds – Alive And Kicking” This week’s highest new entry comes from Simple Minds as they follow up “Don’t You (Forget About Me)”, which became their very first top ten success. Will this follow suit…?
11. Maria Vidal – “Body Rock” Maria Vidal and Huey Lewis and The News have vied for the number eleven spot for the last four weeks and with the latter going down, Maria goes up one and reclaims the position she held two weeks ago!
10. John Parr – “St. Elmo’s Fire” It’s been a great week for John Parr and his theme from the film ‘St. Elmo’s Fire’, which goes up a much healthier seventeen places.
9. Bonnie Tyler – “Holding On For A Hero” But Bonnie Tyler goes down just two this week with her former three week number two hit, which was re-released in the wake of the film ‘Footloose’.
8. Madonna – “Angel” Here is Madonna single number three and it’s her highest charting this week, but also down two places. The track is now one of five to come from her album “Like A Virgin“.
7. David Bowie and Mick Jagger – “Dancing In The Street” The former number one from David Bowie and Mick Jagger falls four places and out of the top three this week as they dance lower than they’ve been before.
6. Billy Idol – “Rebel Yell” Continuing to climb the chart is Billy Idol with his second re-issued single. Seven days on and he’s up two more places.
5. Stevie Wonder – “Part Time Lover” Remaining in the top five is Stevie Wonder but down two with his new single, the first from his album “In Square Circle”.
4. Colonel Abrams – “Trapped” While continuing to outperform his own best is Colonel Abrams. This week he goes into the UK top five, up five more paces.
3. Red Box – “Lean On Me” And that goes for Red Box as they take their very first chart hit up one more place this week and into the top three.
2. Midge Ure – “If I Was” Just one week on top is all that Midge Ure is getting this time as his first solo number one single drops back one place.
1. Jennifer Rush – “The Power Of Love” So we have a new number one and Jennifer Rush is claiming her very first UK number one this week as she goes up one to be the biggest seller of all. But can she keep it, or like Midge Ure, will someone else, like Red Box, Colonel Abrams, move in this time next week? There’s only one way to find out…
