UK Top 40 Singles Chart for 20th October 1985

So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Richard Skinner broadcast from 5pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales.

This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week there were five new entrys, fourteen climbers and four non-movers! And it was announced like this…

40. Huey Lewis and The News – “The Power Of Love”
Will Jennifer Rush’s “Power Of Love” at the top again this week? It could be bookended as the other one from Huey Lewis and The News sits at the bottom of the pile, down fourteen places.

39. The Smiths – “The Boy With The Thorn In His Side”
Going down eleven are The Smiths with their latest offering, which has spent a month inside the top 40.

38. Rene and Angela – “I’ll Be Good”
With double that time, Rene and Angela continue to be good, if only a little so as they drop nine places.

37. The Cure – “Close To Me”
While in their sixth week, The Cure’s latest falls seven places, having missed out on a top twenty placing.

36. Siouxsie and The Banshees – “Cities In Dust”
Our first new entry sees the return of Siouxsie and The Banshees to the chart with a brand new single and an album to follow.

35. UB40 – “Don’t Break My Heart”
Following up on their recent chart topper with Chrissie Hynde, UB40 kick back with a new entry and this time it’s just them.

34. Five Star – “Love Take Over”
Having been non-movers for the last two weeks, Five Star go down nine places with their third top 40 single.

33. Tears For Fears – “I Believe”
And there’s no belief in the latest from Tears For Fears as it falls ten places, the first from their latest album to miss the top twenty.

32. Feargal Sharkey – “A Good Heart”
Feargal Sharkey gets a new entry with his second hit of this year. This track follows up on his top thirty success, “Loving You”.

31. Sade – “The Sweetest Taboo”
Sade were new on last week with this track and a week later they move up five places with it, looking for a top thirty climb this time next week.

30. Madonna – “Angel”
Madonna is back to having two songs on the chart this week and this one is down fourteen places with the follow up yet to come…

29. The Thompson Twins – “King For A Day”
Good news for The Thompson Twins as their latest climbs eleven places and off the bottom to give them a second top thirty hit this year.

28. The Clash – “This Is England”
This may be England but that’s as far as the new single from The Clash goes as a week on it goes down four places.

27. ZZ Top – “Sleeping Bag”
While the new song from ZZ Top goes up twelve in their second week on the UK top 40 with their second hit of this year.

26. Kate Bush – “Cloudbusting”
Kate Bush has had enough of running up that hill and for the follow up, she goes cloudbusting and it gives her a new entry.

25. Cliff Richard – “She’s Beautiful”
Going down just three places this week is Cliff Richard with his best performing single for two whole years.

24. Matt Bianco – “Yeh Yeh”
For a second week, Matt Bianco goes up the chart with his latest. Seven days on and he’s up seven places.

23. Echo and The Bunnymen – “Bring On The Dancing Horses”
Going up ten are Echo and The Bunnymen with their brand new single, which will feature on a best of collection they have coming out next month.

22. Maria Vidal – “Body Rock”
Departing the top twenty this week is Maria Vidal, falling two places with her very first UK hit single.

21. David Bowie and Mick Jagger – “Dancing In The Street”
And just slipping out is the former number one from David Bowie and Mick Jagger, as they dance outside the upper half of the chart, down eight places.

20. King – “The Taste Of Your Tears”
King are aiming for another big hit, they are this week’s highest climbers, up seventeen places, which gives them a fourth chart smash this year.

19. Cameo – “Single Life”
Meanwhile, Cameo have had enough of the single life as their latest offering peaks and drops back four places, having made advances for the past five weeks.

18. Bonnie Tyler – “Holding On For A Hero”
Bonnie Tyler is holding on for a ninth week with her latest epic and she’s above the song that prevented her from taking this to number one, but down six places.

17. The Cult – “Rain”
The Cult got their second top twenty hit last week with this track, but fail to make anymore of it as it pauses for a second week as a non-mover.

16. Stevie Wonder – “Part Time Lover”
With two months as your part time lover, Stevie Wonder descends five places with the lead single from his latest album and his biggest hit for two years.

15. Shakin’ Stevens – “Lipstick, Powder And Paint”
Last week’s highest climber came from Shakin’ Stevens as he burst back into the top twenty and a week on finds him taking smaller steps of three paces.

14. Arcadia – “Election Day”
Our highest new entry this week is a debut single and the name may not be familiar but those behind it are. It’s those 007 hitmakers Simon LeBon, Nick Rhodes and Roger Taylor of Duran Duran that are viewing a second chart hit this year under a new name!

13. Level 42 – “Something About You”
The brand new single from Level 42 continues to earn good points and week four sees them going up eight places and into the upper half of the chart.

12. Grace Jones – “Slave To The Rhythm”
Bond baddie Grace Jones is also going up again. Her biggest UK chart hit yet is up two more places, beating her previous best which was with “Private Life” in 1980.

11. Billy Idol – “Rebel Yell”
There’s a rebel yell before we hit the top ten and it comes from Billy Idol, who departs that part of the chart, down two places with his biggest hit to date.

10. Red Box – “Lean On Me”
Red Box fall six this week with their very first chart hit single but remain top ten for a sixth week in a row.

9. Elton John – “Nikita”
Climbing nine to number nine is last week’s highest new entry from Elton John as he returns to the top ten for the first time in 12 months.

8. Midge Ure – “If I Was”
Midge Ure’s first solo number one hit dives six places this week and out of the number two spot he has held for the past two weeks.

7. Simple Minds – “Alive And Kicking”
Proving they are very much alive and kicking are Simple Minds as their latest goes up one place to equal their previous best.

6. John Parr – “St. Elmo’s Fire”
While John Parr is a non-mover with the title theme of the film ‘St. Elmo’s Fire’, parked outside the top five.

5. Jan Hammer – “Miami Vice Theme”
Moving into the top five is composer Jan Hammer with the theme from a TV series, which goes up five places.

4. Madonna – “Gambler”
Taking a gamble and going up three is Madonna with her sixth top ten hit here this year! The American singer means business!

3. Colonel Abrams – “Trapped”
Colonel Abrams is indeed trapped this week as his first UK chart hit stops here for the time being as a non-mover.

2. a-ha – “Take On Me”
Overtaking him are the new boys from Norway, a-ha, as their very first UK charting single climbs three more to take them within sight of the top.

1. Jennifer Rush – “The Power Of Love”
So we have “The Power Of Love” at the bottom and the top of the chart as Jennifer Rush bags a third week on top with her first UK hit. But can she make it a month long stay, or will a-ha, Madonna or Jan Hammer topple her? There’s only one way to find out…
