UK Top 40 Singles Chart for 3rd November 1985
So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Richard Skinner broadcast from 5pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases. This week there were five new entrys, fourteen climbers and three non-movers! And it was announced like this…
40. Maria Vidal – “Body Rock” Maria Vidal rocks her body for a twelfth week in the UK top 40 as she descends eight places with her first hit here.
39. The Waterboys – “The Whole Of The Moon” We welcome English-Irish band The Waterboys to the top 40 for the first time this week with this song, the lead single from their upcoming third studio album.
38. The Cult – “Rain” Continuing to fall like rain are The Cult. Week six sees them down thirteen places with their second hit of this year.
37. Lloyd Cole and The Commotions – “Lost Weekend” Coming back for more are Lloyd Cole and The Commotions with this new entry and the second single from their new album which is due out later this month.
36. Bryan Adams and Tina Turner – “It’s Only Love” Up next are two big time rock stars, Bryan Adams and Tina Turner, who gain a new entry with this duet from his album “Reckless”.
35. Bonnie Tyler – “Holding Out For A Hero” Bonnie Tyler continues to hold out for her hero and eleven weeks on she’s still in the chart but down seven places.
34. ZZ Top – “Sleeping Bag” While also down seven are ZZ Top, having spent the past two weeks in their sleeping bags with this song.
33. Stevie Wonder – “Part Time Lover” Ten weeks in for Stevie Wonder now with this song and he’s down nine places. It has topped the charts in seven counties to date.
32. Doug E. Fresh and The Get Fresh Crew – “The Show” Doug E. Fresh comes fresh to the UK top 40 this week with his Get Fresh Crew as they finally make it this far with their third single.
31. Paul Hardcastle – “Just For Money” Just above them is this week’s highest new entry from former chart topper Paul Hardcastle with his third top 40 hit of this year.
30. The Communards – “You Are My World” The Communards debuted on the top 40 last week as a duo and take their first single up ten places in their second.
29. The Thompson Twins – “King For A Day” While The Thompson Twins, who actually aren’t twins, are done with being kings for a day and drop seven places.
28. Madness – “Uncle Sam” Madness move into the top thirty with their new entry from last week, which goes up six places. This is the second to come from their album “Mad Not Mad”.
27. Echo and The Bunnymen – “Bring On The Dancing Horses” The race is over for Echo and The Bunnymen as their current single goes down six and away from the top twenty.
26. Billy Idol – “Rebel Yell” Billy Idol has to yell outside the upper half of the chart this week as his biggest hit to date falls eight places.
25. Red Box – “Lean On Me” As do Red Box as their first chart hit falls eleven. The band are currently recording their debut album which should be out next year.
24. Midge Ure – “If I Was” The former number one from Midge Ure follows on and goes down eight places. His album came out last month and it’s called “The Gift”.
23. Dire Straits – “Brothers In Arms” The title track of Dire Straits latest album arrived this time last week and goes up sixteen places. The album itself is now double Platinum.
22. Simon May Orchestra – “Howards Way Theme” Another of last week’s new ones came from the Simon May Orchestra with the theme from the new drama series on BBC 1 and it goes up nine places.
21. Siouxsie and The Banshees – “Cities In Dust” It’s been another good week for Siouxsie and The Banshees as they climb two places hoping for a top twenty move seven days from now…
20. Kate Bush – “Cloudbusting” Kate Bush continues to cloudbust in the top twenty but it’s at number twenty that she does it for a second week.
19. Grace Jones – “Slave To The Rhythm” Going down six places is former Bond baddie Grace Jones with the follow up to her menacing appearance in this year’s ‘A View To A Kill’.
18. Eurythmics and Aretha Franklin – “Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves” The unlikely alliance between the Eurythmics and Aretha Franklin seems to be working as they are this week’s highest climbers up twenty places!
17. Talking Heads – “Road To Nowhere” Talking Heads’ road leads to the top twenty as their highest new entry from last week goes up nine places.
16. The Far Corporation – “Stairway To Heaven” While The Far Corporation’s cover of the Led Zeppelin classic climbs thirteen to bring them into the UK top twenty.
15. Shakin’ Stevens – “Lipstick, Powder And Paint” Shakin’ Stevens falls four with his latest and newest offering after four weeks of slapping it on upwards!
14. Jan Hammer – “Theme From Miami Vice” Composer Jan Hammer leaves the top ten this week, down six with his theme from the TV series that stars Don Johnson.
13. Matt Bianco – “Yeh Yeh” While Matt Bianco says “yeh” a few more times and goes up four with what is now his/their highest charting single yet!
12. King – “The Taste Of Your Tears” King continue going up with their latest, which is three places higher than it was this time last week.
11. Simple Minds – “Alive And Kicking” But just dropping out of the top ten are Simple Minds, down just one with the lead single from their brand new album called “Once Upon A Time”.
10. Arcadia – “Election Day” Election day is over for Arcadia and they lost! Having moved into the top ten last week with their debut single, the trio fall three places.
9. John Parr – “St. Elmo’s Fire” Also going down is John Parr having spent the last three weeks parked just outside the top five with the title song from that film.
8. Madonna – “Gambler” For the first time in many weeks, Madonna is back to just one single in the top 40 and it’s down three places.
7. UB40 – “Don’t Break My Heart” Coming back to the top ten once more are UB40 as the follow up to their number one with Chrissie Hynde climbs twelve places.
6. Level 42 – “Something About You” Level 42 are doing their level best again as they go up three places, seven weeks in with their biggest hit for two years.
5. Colonel Abrams – “Trapped” Colonel Abrams is trapped no longer as he is freed from the number three position and falls two places.
4. Feargal Sharkey – “A Good Heart” Last week’s highest climber from Feargal Sharkey continues to earn yet more approval as he gets his first top ten hit with a climb of eight.
3. Elton John – “Nikita” While Elton John goes up just one with his latest, which is now his highest charting single for nine years.
2. a-ha – “Take On Me” Stubbornly the a-ha boys stay at number two for a third week running with their debut chart hit here in the UK.
1. Jennifer Rush – “The Power Of Love” So that means for a FIFTH week it’s Jennifer Rush that claims the biggest seller of all with her first UK top 40 hit. Can she go to six, or will Elton, Feargal or someone else put an end to her reign? There’s only one way to find out…
