UK Top 40 Singles Chart for Sunday 19th June 1988
So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 5-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 13th to Saturday 18th June 1988.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week, thirty years ago, there were nine new entry’s, thirteen climbers and two non-movers! And it was announced like this…
40. INXS – “Never Tear Us Apart”
INXS are back on the UK top 40 with a new entry and the fourth single to come from their “Kick” album. Their last, “New Sensation”, went top thirty back in January.
39. Natalie Cole – “Everlasting”
Natalie Cole come back much quicker than that with the follow up to “Pink Cadillac”, which left us three weeks ago and is followed by the title track of her new album which becomes the second single.
38. LA Mix – “Check This Out”
LA Mix has recently gone top ten with this UK chart debut and has clocked up six weeks on the top 40. This week he slides twenty places.
37. Scritti Politti – “Oh Patti (Don’t Feel Sorry For Lover Boy)”
Scritti Politti are down too with their biggest chart hit for three years, but not so much, just thirteen for them this week.
36. Glenn Medeiros – “Nothing’s Gonna Change My Love For You”
Glenn Medeiros is 17 years old and hails from Hawaii and released this cover of a George Benson song in the US last February. It made it to No.12 there and now he’s looking for international success with it. He scores his first UK chart entry this week in doing so!
35. Elton John – “I Don’t Wanna Go On With You Like That”
Elton John was back in the top five at the beginning of the year with a live version of a fourteen year old song. Today he returns with something much more recent and a track from his forthcoming new album called “Reg Strikes Back”!
34. Joy Division – “Atmosphere”
Before New Order became New Order, they were Joy Division and had a big hit in 1980 with “Love Will Tear Us Apart”. That song gained a re-entry three years later and five years on, they score their first top 40 entry with a track that comes from a new best of collection.
33. Glen Goldsmith – “What You See Is What You Get”
Glen Goldsmith has charted top 40 with all of his four singles released to date. The latest is also the title track of his debut album and is up four places this week.
32. Hazell Dean – “Maybe (We Should Call It A Day)”
Hazell Dean scored her biggest hit in three years a couple of months ago and wants another one with this follow up, which becomes her fourth top 40 chart entry.
31. T’Pau – “I Will Be With You”
And it doesn’t seem like T’Pau have given up on their Platinum selling chart topping debut just yet and a fifth single give them five top 40 chart hits from one album this week!
30. Fairground Attraction – “Perfect”
Fairground Attraction’s debut single hasn’t done bad. A chart topper and ten weeks on the top 40, so far, even if they go down thirteen places this week.
29. Sade – “Paradise”
Not such a good week for Sade who is a non-mover seven days on, she remains in exactly the same position.
28. Aswad – “Give A Little Love”
And Aswad‘s follow up to their March number one is down fourteen this week and out of the top twenty.
27. The Communards – “There’s More To Love”
The Communards scored their fourth chart hit from the “Red” album last week and are up five places this week.
26. Tracy Chapman – “Fast Car”
Here comes a chart debut, however, from a 24yo American singer-songwriter with her debut single that was released Stateside two months ago and has gone top ten. She makes her UK chart debut this week and shows all the signs of following that success.
25. a-ha – “The Blood That Moves The Body”
a-ha entered the chart last week with the second single from their new album, “Stay On These Roads”. But seven days hasn’t been entirely kind to them, as they move up just one place.
24. Salt’n’Pepa – “Push It”
US hip hop duo Salt (Cheryl James) and Pepa (Sandra Denton) released this song in America last year and took it into the top twenty. Now they make their UK chart debut and make quite an entrance as they are this week’s highest new entry!
23. Belinda Carlisle – “Circle In The Sand”
Belinda Carlisle‘s third UK top ten hit is down ten places this week. The song has peaked at No.7 Stateside, three places lower than it reached here.
22. Sisters Of Mercy – “Lucretia My Reflection”
Sisters Of Mercy got a big new entry last week with their third top twenty hit in a row. It seems that was it as they drop back two this week.
21. Bruce Springsteen – “Tougher Than The Rest”
It’s been a great week for Bruce Springsteen with the fourth single from his latest album, “Tunnel Of Love”, rising seventeen places.
20. Rose Royce – “Car Wash”
Rose Royce’s 1976 top ten hit came back to the chart last week and makes its way into the top twenty this week with a climb of eight places.
19. Mica Paris – “My One Temptation”
Mica Paris‘ debut single has been a top ten success more recently that that, and after leaving the upper end of the chart last week, is down seven this week.
18. The Eurythmics – “You Have Placed A Chill In My Heart”
The Eurythmics have made the top thirty with two of the three previous singles released from last year’s album, “Savage”. This week they take the fourth into the top twenty with a climb of seven places.
17. Matt Bianco – “Blame It On That Girl/Wap Bam Boogie”
Matt Bianco has had two previous top twenty hits. One in 1984 and one in 1985. He adds a third to that list with a climb of four this week.
16. Voice Of The Beehive – “Don’t Call Me Baby”
After four weeks of solid progress, chart newcomers Voice Of The Beehive drop back one place this week, with their very first UK hit.
15. Tiffany – “I Saw Him Standing There”
Tiffany leaves the top ten this week with a fall of five places, with her third UK chart hit of this year.
14. Aztec Camera – “Somewhere In My Heart”
And that goes for Aztec Camera as well, down six places and out of the top ten with their biggest chart hit yet.
13. Morrissey – “Everyday Is Like Sunday”
Morrissey went top ten with his second solo single last week but goes back the other way seven days on, with a drop of four places.
12. Kylie Minogue – “Got To Be Certain”
Kylie Minogue leaves the top ten this week with a fall of six places with the follow up to her five week chart topping debut.
11. Erasure – “Chains Of Love”
Vince and Andy‘s second single from their current number one album “The Innocents” parked itself outside the top ten last week and that’s where it stays for another seven days.
10. Wet Wet Wet – “With A Little Help From My Friends”
The Wets former chart topper is down seven this week, it’s seventh week in the chart and seventh in the top ten.
9. UB40 and Chrissie Hynde – “Breakfast In Bed”
Here come two hefty chart climbers next. The first is from UB40 and Chrissie Hynde with their follow up of sorts of “I Got You Babe”, which was a new entry last week and moves up twenty one places this week! But it’s not the highest…
8. Phil Collins – “In The Air Tonight”
That belongs to Phil Collins with his 1981 hit that returned to the chart last week and climbs a whopping TWENTY SEVEN places this week! The original went to No.2 and this looks set to eclipse that perhaps next week…?!
7. Desireless – “Voyage Voyage”
France’s Desireless became only the second act this year (after Vanessa Paradis) to score a UK top five hit, but they/she drops back two places this week.
6. The Pasadenas – “Tribute”
It’s been another fantastic week for newcomers The Pasadenas who climb ten places, into the top ten, with their debut single!
5. Maxi Priest – “Wild World”
Maxi Priest is up two this week and into the top five, his first, and more successful than Cat Steven’s original, which reached No.11 in America and wasn’t even released here!
4. The Fat Boys and Chubby Checker – “The Twist”
Ernest Evans is not a chart worthy name for a long and successful career, but if you change your name to Chubby Checker it just may be! His 1960 hit “The Twist” has been refreshed for the 80’s with hip hop duo The Fat Boys and it’s up fifteen places this week!
3. Sabrina – “Boys (Summertime Love)”
Last week’s highest climber from Italy’s Sabrina is up one place this week. She took the song top five all over mainland Europe last Summer and now she’s going global this year!
2. The Timelords – “Doctorin’ The Tardis”
It was just one week on top for The Timelords as they are down one place this week with their UK top 40 debut, although they usually go by the name of The KLF.
1. Bros – “I Owe You Nothing”
Well, the boys have done it! Matt, Luke and Craig have managed to break the No.2 mold, where they entered as last week’s highest new entry, and climb one place to claim their very first UK number one! But can they stay there for a second week or will Sabrina, The Fat Boys and Chubby Checker or even Maxi Priest knock them off? There’s only one way to find out…
