UK Top 40 Singles Chart for Sunday 5th June 1988
So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 5-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 30th May to Saturday 4th June 1988.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week, thirty years ago, there were eight new entry’s, eleven climbers and two non-movers! And it was announced like this…
40. Nick Kamen – “Tell Me”
Nick Kamen is back in the top 40 this week with a new entry, his first since “Loving You Is Sweeter Than Ever” early last year. It’s the lead single from his forthcoming, second studio album, which is due very soon.
39. Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson – “Get It”
Despite all the star power going from these two, Stevie and Michael actually drop two places this week, just one week after they came in!
38. Harry Enfield – “Loadsmoney”
Yeilding more star power and ‘loadsamoney’ than them is Harry Enfield, who falls eight places this week with his debut single.
37. The Eurythmics – “You Have Placed A Chill In My Heart”
Dave and Annie are back with another track from last year’s “Savage” album, the fourth in fact and the follow up to “I Need A Man” back in March.
36. Matt Bianco – “Don’t Blame It On That Girl/Wap Bam Boogie”
Also making a chart return is Matt Bianco with his first top 40 showing since “Yeh Yeh” back in 1985 and another artist with a new album (his third) coming out soon.
35. Sade – “Paradise”
And the chart returns keep coming, this time with Sade and a brand new track from her forthcoming studio album, that marks her first top 40 hit since “The Sweetest Taboo”, also in 1985!
34. Narada – “Divine Emotions”
Narada Michael Walden is down fourteen this week with his chart comeback and his biggest hit in ten years.
33. The Pasadenas – “Tribute”
Now it’s time for a chart debut and five British lads who come together with this, their debut release, which enters the top 40 ahead of a planned long player coming later this year.
32. Brass Construction – “Movin’ ’88”
Sadly for Brass Construction, they didn’t quite beat their 1976 chart high with this new version, which falls eight places this week.
31. James Brown – “I’m Real”
James Brown is certainly ‘real’ and he made a return to the chart last week with this brand new tune, which goes up eight places.
30. Alexander O’Neal – “The Lovers”
Going the other way is Britain’s Alexander O’Neal with the latest single from his album, “Hearsay”, which goes down two places this week.
29. Ofra Haza – “Im Nin’Alu”
Down and out of the top twenty this week for Ofra Haza with her first UK chart hit, which slides thirteen places.
28. Fields Of The Nephilim – “Moonchild”
British band Fields Of The Nephilim made their top 40 debut last week and can be pleased with a rise of eight places this week.
27. S-Express – “Theme From S-Express”
S-Express are still counting down to their former chart topping ‘theme’, which is also going down ten places this week.
26. Heart – “What About Love?”
As are Heart, who leave the top twenty with a drop of eleven this week, with their second UK chart hit of this year.
25. Debbie Gibson – “Out Of The Blue”
Debbie Gibson has accumulated three top twenty hits so far out of three singles released, but her latest leaves the upper half of the chart this week with a fall of six places.
24. Sabrina – “Boys (Summertime Love)”
Here’s a new entry from a young lady that took Europe by storm last year with this song, becoming THE anthem of the Summer. Now Italy’s Sabrina makes her bid for UK chart supremacy with this big new entry and is “looking for a good time” here in Blighty!
23. Voice of The Beehive – “Don’t Call Me Baby”
British/American band Voice Of The Beehive have been with us for three weeks now and continue to climb the chart, four places for them this week with their fourth release, but first to make the UK top 40.
22. Rod Stewart – “Lost In You”
Not such good news for Rod Stewart this week as his latest and newest single drops back one place, perhaps making way for his new album, “Out Of Order”, which came out this week.
21. Liverpool FC – “The Anfield Rap”
Liverpool have left the pitch and they’ve also left the top twenty this week, down nine places, with their rallying anthem to all fans.
20. New Order – “Blue Monday ’88”
New Order leave the top ten this week with a fall of eleven places, their first time out of the top flight with the 1988 remix of their 1983 hit.
19. Erasure – “Chains Of Love”
Vince and Andy are back this week with another top twenty new entry and the second new song to come from their new album, “The Innocents”, which also features “Ship Of Fools” from February this year.
18. Five Star – “Another Weekend”
Five Star also have a new album coming soon and the first taster of that new album made an appearance on last week’s chart and goes up seven places this week to give the band their twelfth top twenty hit.
17. Hothouse Flowers – “Don’t Go”
After two weeks on hold outside the top ten, Hothouse Flowers go down six this week with their first UK top 40 hit.
16. Whitney Houston – “Love Will Save The Day”
And also dropping six places this week is Whitney, after just one week in the top ten, with the fifth single to come from last year’s album, “Whitney”.
15. Maxi Priest – “Wild World”
Maxi Priest scored only his third top 40 entry last week with this version of Cat Steven’s 1970 hit and makes his second appearance in the top twenty this week with a powerful climb of seventeen places!
14. Scritti Politti – “Oh Patti (Don’t Feel Sorry For Lover Boy)”
Not such good news for Scritti Politti this week who actually slide back one place with their biggest hit for three years.
13. Prefab Sprout – “The King of Rock And Roll”
And also going down are Prefab Sprout with their very first top ten hit, which slides six places this week and out.
12. Morrissey – “Everyday Is Like Sunday”
Morrissey made his solo chart debut earlier this year with “Suedehead” that comes from his debut album, “Viva Hate”. This is the second single from that album and it’s also this week’s highest new entry.
11. Aswad – “Give A Little Love”
Aswad continue to make strong movements with a climb of seven places this week to put them just outside the top ten, where their last release not only entered but also topped!
10. Fairground Attraction – “Perfect”
After spending five weeks in the top five, former chart toppers Fairground Attraction drop seven places this week with their debut single.
9. LA Mix – “Check This Out”
Also going down, but just by three places, is former highest climber LA Mix with his first UK top 10 hit.
8. Tiffany – “I Saw Him Standing There”
Tiffany is back in the UK top ten for a third time with her third single release. She was new on last week with this Beatles cover and rockets up fifteen places this week.
7. Mica Paris – “My One Temptation”
Mica Paris is still doing positive moves with her debut single, which is up one more place this week and Mica is currently putting the finishing touches to her debut album that will be coming out in a couple of months time.
6. Belinda Carlisle – “Circle In The Sand”
Slipping back two places this week is Belinda Carlisle with her third UK chart hit and also the third single to come from her, now double Platinum album, “Heaven On Earth”.
5. Desireless – “Voyage, Voyage ’88”
Last weeks highest climber from France’s Desireless was already the best performance for this song here, so another climb of eleven places this week not only takes it into the top ten, but where the song peaked in over twenty other countries last year!
4. The Timelords – “Doctorin’ The Tardis”
The Timelords aka Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty made a big impact on the chart last week with their very first appearance which was the highest new entry, this week they speed through time and space, eighteen places to be the week’s highest climber!
3. Aztec Camera – “Somewhere In My Heart”
Aztec Camera continue to go from strength to strength with their already biggest chart hit and first top ten hit, which is up two more places this week.
2. Kylie Minogue – “Got To Be Certain”
Refusing to budge for a third week is Kylie Minogue with her second UK single release and her second top two hit, which remains an non-mover.
1. Wet Wet Wet – “With A Little Help From My Friends”
And that applies to Wet Wet Wet as well, who remain at the very top for a fourth consecutive week, raising lots of worthwhile money for Childline. But can they make it a fifth week, or will Aztec Camera, The Timelords or Desireless all score their very first number one? There’s only one way to find out…
