Thirty years ago: UK Top 40 Singles Chart for Sunday 9th July 1989

So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 5-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 3rd to Saturday 8th July 1989.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week, thirty years ago, there were five new entry’s, twelve climbers and three non-movers! And it was announced like this…
40. The Blow Monkeys – “Choice”
We start with a new entry for The Blow Monkeys with their third top 40 hot of this year, following in the footsteps of “This Is Your Life” (No.32) and “Wait” (No.7). How far will this one get?
39. Fuzzbox – “Pink Sunshine”
But Fuzzbox are going in the opposite direction, down eleven this week and with eight weeks on the chart, it could be their last.
38. Public Enemy – “Fight The Power”
So too are Public Enemy who fall nine places with four weeks in the top 40 and it looks like their last too.
37. Holly Johnson – “Atomic City”
Holly’s behind them, down twelve this week with the third chart hit from his album “Blast“.
36. Clannad and Bono – “In A Lifetime”
Clannad and U2’s Bono fall seventeen this week with the re-issue of the song they took to No.20 in 1986.
35. The Bangles – “Be With You”
The four ladies that make up The Bangles are down twelve this week with five weeks in the top 40.
34. Madonna – “Express Yourself”
And Madonna is down ten with the second single from “Like A Prayer” which has amassed seven weeks.
33. Simply Red – “A New Flame”
Simply Red are back with a new entry, the third single and the title track from their massive number one album, following “If You Don’t Know Me By Now” (No.2) and “It’s Only Love” (No.13).
32. Guns’N’Roses – “Sweet Child O’Mine”
Here’s a group that continue to have two top 40 entries for the third week running, this one’s down twelve, we’ll catch up with the other one a bit later.
31. Norman Cook – “Won’t Talk About It”
Former Housemartin Norman Cook debuted last week and this week he’s up seven places. His former bandmates Paul and Dave are also about, somewhere…!
30. Gloria Estefan – “Don’t Wanna Lose You”
Gloria Estefan is back with a brand new track and get’s a new entry with her fifth consecutive UK chart hit in less than a year which is taken from her brand new album “Cuts Both Ways”!
29. LA Mix featuring Jazzi P – “Get Loose”
Another new entry from last week was LA Mix, this week they go up ten places with UK rapper Jazzi P with their first top 40 hit.
28. Kirsty MacColl – “Days”
As was Kirsty MacColl, she climbs eight places this week with her version of The Kinks 1968 No.12 hit, which comes from her new album “Kite”.
27. Danny Wilson – “Second Summer Of Love”
And so were Danny Wilson, they climb five places with only their second top 40 entry, the other was of course “Mary’s Prayer”.
26. D-Mob – “It Is Time To Get Funky”
Danny D and the mob have been on the chart now for seven weeks but fall ten places this week.
25. Waterfront – “Cry”
These two musicians from Cardiff continue to climb the chart, two places this week for them after a month on.
24. Donna Allen – “Joy And Pain”
Donna Allen, however, is down seven this week in her seventh week with her second UK top ten hit so far.
23. U2 – “All I Want Is You”
Here comes Bono again with his normal group U2, down fifteen this week with their fourth UK top ten hit in nine months.
22. De La Soul – “Say No, Go”
A new entry last week for De La Soul with their second UK top 40 hit and this week they climb eleven places and now match “Me, Myself And I” for chart peak back in March.
21. Jason Donovan – “Sealed With A Kiss”
Jason’s slipping out of the top twenty this week, he’s down seven this week with the third number one from his number one album “Ten Good Reasons“.
20. Sinitta – “Right Back Where We Started From”
Sinitta is down seven this week with her first top 40 hit of 1989. She has more new music to follow and a new album later this year!
19. Monie Love – “Grandpa’s Party”
Monie Love scores her first top twenty hit this week as she climbs three more places with her second single release.
18. Michael Jackson – “Liberian Girl”
Jacko is back with a new entry and the NINTH, yes the 9th single to be lifted from his multi-million selling album “Bad”! How many more will there be?!
17. M – “Pop Muzik ’89”
Robin Scott aka M drops two places this week with his re-working of his 1979 chart classic which has failed to replicate the top success of the original.
16. Double Trouble and The Rebel MC – “Just Keep Rockin'”
And after six weeks of steady climbing, Double Trouble are down five places this week with their UK chart debut.
15. Cyndi Lauper – “I Drove All Night”
Cyndi is also down, six for her this week with her comeback single and a re-recording of Roy Orbison’s 1987 original.
14. Guns’N’Roses – “Paradise City”
Here’s the other G’N’R track on this weeks chart, it too is falling like it’s ‘elder’ chart veteran, four places and out of the top ten.
13. Queen – “Breakthru”
Queen are also dropping out of the big ten as they slide six places and back to where they were two weeks ago!
12. A Guy Called Gerald – “Voodoo Ray”
Gerald Simpson is doing very well, however, he got a big climb last week and goes up another fourteen places this week with his UK chart debut.
11. Karyn White – “Superwoman”
Karyn White also has a great week, she’s up another ten places with her UK chart debut and a song that made No.8 in America last December. Can she beat that here…?
10. Prince – “Batdance”
Lots of songs from films on this weeks chart, here’s one from the current ‘Batman’ film but its falling six places for Prince.
9. Bette Midler – “Wind Beneath My Wings”
Doing the opposite is Bette Midler, her song is from her new movie ‘Beaches’ and by leaping a massive twenty one places, she scores this week’s highest climber and her first UK top ten hit ever!
8. Bobby Brown – “On Our Own”
Bobby Brown has also recorded a song for a movie, ‘Ghostbusters II’ and he gets this week’s highest new entry and in doing so, scores his fourth UK chart hit of this year!
7. Gladys Knight – “Licence To Kill”
And look at this, a fourth movie theme in a row, this time from the sixteenth and current James Bond film of the same name, performed by Gladys Knight, but she’s slipping one place this week.
6. Chaka Khan – “Ain’t Nobody ’89”
Chaka Khan returned last week with this updated version of her 1983 hit and climbs twelve places, scoring her second top ten hit in three months AND takes this version two places higher than the original!
5. Pet Shop Boys – “It’s Alright”
Chris and Neil were last week’s highest new entry but they stay exactly where they came in this week, their seventh UK top five hit of their career so far.
4. The Beautiful South – “Song For Whoever”
The other former Housemartins Dave and Paul formed their new group The Beautiful South and released this song as their debut single. Its done rather well but this week it falls two places.
3. The London Boys – “London Nights”
Dennis and Edem remain where they landed last week with their second and highest charting top five hit of this year so far.
2. Sonia – “You’ll Never Stop Me Loving You”
18 year old Liverpudlian Sonia Evans was last week’s colossal high climber of twenty six places and she gets another boost this week of ten places with her debut single, courtesty of those talented men at PWL!
1. Soul II Soul – “Back For Life”
Which means for the fourth week running, Jazzie B and his Soul II SoulJazzie B and his Soul II Soul collective remain at the top of the singles chart with their second and by far, their biggest UK chart hit so far. Can they achieve a fifth, there’s only one way to find out…!
