UK Top 40 Singles Chart for Sunday 11th January 1987
So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Bruno Brookes broadcast from 5-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales from Monday 5th to Saturday 10th January 1987.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week there were fourteen new entrys, nine climbers and three non-movers! And it was announced like this…
40. Raze – “Jack The Groove”
US dance group Raze released this, their debut single in their homeland just a few months ago and now it’s out over here and makes a new entry on our top 40 this week.
39. Kool And The Gang – “Victory”
Kool And The Gang are back for 1987 with this new entry and the lead single from a new album that’s coming out very soon and this is their first chart hit since “Cherish”, two years ago.
38. Swing Out Sister – “Breakout”
Swing Out Sister still have two songs on the chart this week, their former is down fifteen places, while the follow up is yet to come.
37. Freeez – “IOU”
UK quintet Freeez haven’t had a chart hit for six years, not since “Flying High” back in 1981, but they remedy that this week with a brand new entry.
36. Taffy – “I Love My Radio”
Londo based singer Katherine Quaye aka Taffy has been releasing singles since 1977. This track was first released back in 1985 but failed to make the chart then. It does now, two years later.
35. Randy Crawford – “Almaz”
Making her UK chart return since “Rainy Night In Georgia” in 1981 is Randy Crawford with this, the lead single from her new album called “Abstract Emotions”, that’s out now.
34. Vesta Williams – “Once Bitten Twice Shy”
29 year old US singer Vesta Williams is embarking on a music career and it starts with this debut single, which has already made the top ten on the US R&B chart, now it’s a new entry over here on our singles chart.
33. Julian Cope – “Trampoline”
The new entry’s keep coming as Julian Cope debuts with the second single to come from last year’s album, “Saint Julian”.
32. Curiosity Killed The Cat – “Down To Earth”
And there’s another new entry, this time a top 40 debut for British band Curiosity Killed The Cat. This is their second single, their first fell way short of the top 40, but not this follow up. Welcome boys!
31. UB40 – “Rat In My Kitchen”
And yet another new entry, this time for UB40 and the title track of their current album, which is the third release but only the second to make the top 40.
30. Siouxsie And The Banchees – “This Wheel’s On Fire”
They keep coming and this time it’s Siouxsie And The Banchees with this cover of a 1967 Bob Dylan song that made the top five via British singer, Julie Driscoll. How far will this version go…?
29. Dead Or Alive – “Something In My House”
It’s been a wholesale clearout of 1986 this week as new 1987 releases come in and Dead Or Alice are one of the new intake with this new entry and the follow up to last year’s “Brand New Lover”.
28. The Bangles – “Walking Down Your Street”
One out, one in for The Bangles with “Walk Like An Egyptian” gone, they make an immediate return with the follow up from their album, “Different Light”.
27. Status Quo – “Dreamin'”
The Quo are down ten places this week and out of the top twenty with their latest offering from “In The Army Now”.
26. Paul Simon – “The Boy In The Bubble”
As Paul Simon climbs five places with his new entry last week and another track from the “Graceland” album.
25. Berlin – “Take My Breath Away”
The former number one from Berlin is out of the top twenty and down nine places this week in its twelfth week on the top 40.
24. The Mission – “Wasteland”
But coming back for a second shot at chart action are The Mission with this new entry, which is the follow up to last year’s top thirty hit, “Stay With Me”.
23. Jaki Graham – “Step Right Up”
After two weeks on hold, Jaki Graham is down and out of the upper half of the chart by eight places this week.
22. Bon Jovi – “Livin’ On A Prayer”
And going down nine places are Bon Jovi with their first UK top ten hit from their current album, “Slippery When Wet”.
21. The Communards – “So Cold The Night”
Jimmy and Richard are down nine places as well with their latest offering from their self-titled debut album.
20. Gary Moore – “Over The Hills And Far Away”
Gary Moore entered the top twenty last week and that’s where he remains, going nowhere for a second week.
19. Gregory Abbott – “Shake You Down”
But Gregory Abbott leaves the top ten after seven weeks with his biggest UK hit to date, down nine places.
18. Iggy Pop – “Real Wild Child”
As a result of lots of new entry’s, most of last week’s are climbing high and that starts with Iggy Pop, who takes his first UK top 40 single up eighteen places and into the top twenty.
17. Lionel Richie – “Ballerina Girl”
Lionel is up too and into the upper half of the chart by another seven places this week.
16. Genesis – “Land Of Confusuion”
As Genesis drop two places with the fourth single to come from last years triple Platinum certified album, “Invisible Touch”.
15. The Style Council – “It Didn’t Matter”
Paul And Mick make a bold new entry this week straight into the top twenty with the second track that will feature on their new, upcoming album, “The Cost Of Loving”, which is out next month and this is this week’s highest of them all.
14. Europe – “The Final Countdown”
Another former number one still on the chart is Europe’s UK top 40 debut and it’s down ten places and out of the top ten this week.
13. a-ha – “Cry Wolf”
Also leaving the top ten are a-ha, down eight places, with the latest single from their album, “Scoundrel Days”.
12. Madonna – “Open Your Heart”
And they keep falling, Madonna‘s next, down six places with the third single from her album, “True Blue“.
11. Oran ‘Juice’ Jones – “The Rain”
And just another one to add to that list, The Juiceman is down three places and out with his UK chart debut hit.
10. Swing Out Sister – “Surrender”
Swing Out Sister‘s other song on the chart was a new entry last week and a massive climb of TWENTY EIGHT places, puts then back in the top ten and also, by far, this week’s biggest mover!
9. Erasure – “Sometimes”
Vince and Andy remain top ten this week while all else changes around them, dropping just two places and continuing to perform beyond expectations.
8. The Pretenders – “Hymn To Her”
The Pretenders are back in the top ten this week as they go up eleven places, giving them a second big hit from last year’s “Get Close” album.
7. The Housemartins – “Caravan Of Love”
The third former number one still on the chart comes from The Housemartins and having spent three weeks in second place, they drop five places and begin their descent.
6. Robbie Nevil – “C’est La Vie”
Chart newcomer Robbie Nevil made his first steps to success last week with a new entry and shoots up twenty six places, seven days on, straight into the top ten!
5. Elkie Brooks – “No More The Fool”
Last week’s highest climber, Elkie Brooks, takes her biggest hit since “Pearl’s A Singer” up six more places and into the top ten this week.
4. The Gap Band – “Big Fun”
Also going up, five places this week, are The Gap Band, overtaking their previous UK chart high with “Oops Up Side Your Head” in 1980 and bagging their very first top five hit.
3. Alison Moyet – “Is This Love?”
Alison Moyet‘s first new single from her next album is a non-mover this week, remaining just where it got to this time last week.
2. Steve ‘Silk’ Hurley – “Jack Your Body”
Last week’s highest new entry from producer and DJ Steve ‘Silk’ Hurley, ‘hurls’ up sixteen places this week and positions itself just below the biggest seller. Will it go up any more…?
1. Jackie Wilson – “Reet Petite”
Mr. Hurley didn’t quite go far enough to lodge Jackie Wilson off the op, three weeks now with his thirty year old single that remains the biggest seller of all. But can he last a fourth, or will Steve Hurley, The Gap Band, Elkie Brooks or someone else knock him off? There’s only one way to find out…
