UK Top 40 Singles Chart for 8th September 1985
So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Richard Skinner broadcast from 4pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales.
This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases. This week there were eight new entrys, eleven climbers and two non-movers! And it was announced like this…
40. Blancmange – “What’s Your Problem?” Blancmange return to the top 40 this week with something new. This is the first track to come from their next album, which will be released later next month.
39. Kool and The Gang – “Cherish” Kool and The Gang make it an eighteenth week on the chart with this song! “Cherish” joined us back in May and it’s still here, but down nine places.
38. Billy Idol – “Rebel Yell” Billy Idol feels like joining Madonna and Bruce Springsteen, both of whom have had two or more singles on the top 40 recently. This is a re-release of a single Billy brought out early last year, which didn’t make it this high back then.
37. Rene and Angela – “I’ll Be Good” American duo Rene and Angela have been recording together since the late 70’s and already have a number of singles to their name, but this is the first to make it to the UK top 40.
36. Lloyd Cole and The Commotions – “Brand New Friend” There’s a new entry and a chart return next for Lloyd Cole and The Commotions with only their second single to make the top 40. This is the first to come from their second album, due out later this year.
35. Marc Almond – “Stories Of Johnny” Marc Almond is still telling stories of Johnny, but he does so eight places lower than he was last week. The song is the title track of his new album, which is out next week.
34. Colonel Abrams – “Trapped” We welcome Colonel Abrams to the UK top 40 this week, after two previous singles, his third is the lucky one to make it here in the UK.
33. Cliff Richard – “She’s So Beautiful” In a week of chart comebacks, Cliff Richard joins the list with this new entry, which is his first since “Baby You’re Dynamite”, at the beginning of last year.
32. Eurythmics – “There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart)” Dave and Annie of the Eurythmics fall seven this week with their former one week chart topper, now with eleven weeks on the top 40.
31. Bananarama – “Do Not Disturb” The Bananarama girls are on the up again. Their first new material for nearly two years climbs three places in week three.
30. Red Box – “Lean On Me” We welcome British band Red Box to the top 40 this week with a big new entry. This is their third, having released their debut back in 1983.
29. Midge Ure – “If I Was” While one above them is this week’s highest new entry from former Ultravox lead single Midge Ure with his first solo single since 1983’s “After A Fashion”.
28. Total Contrast – “Takes A Little Time” Total Contrast fall four this week with their very first top 40 single. This is the fifth from the boys, who also released their debut album a few months ago.
27. Amazulu – “Excitable” Another top 40 first this time from Amazulu and they are also going down, five for them with their fourth single since their debut came out in 1983.
26. Maria Vidal – “Body Rock” Enjoying a healthy second week is American singer Maria Vidal, who made her debut on the UK top 40 last week and she goes up twelve places.
25. Tina Turner – “We Don’t Need Another Hero” Coming the other way is fellow American Tina Turner, who falls seven places with the main tune from her film ‘Mad Max 3’.
24. D Train – “You’re The One For Me ’85” D Train follow, down five places and out of the top twenty with the remix of their debut single, which only made it top thirty here.
23. Madonna – “Holiday” Like Billy Idol, Madonna has two singles on the chart this week. Her holiday is coming to an end and she’s out of the top twenty as well, down nine.
22. Rebecca Storm – “The Show” Rebecca Storm continues to climb the chart with her song from the TV series Connie. This week she goes up six places.
21. Bryan Ferry – “Don’t Stop The Dance” Also up is Bryan Ferry with the follow up to “Slave To Love”, which is five places higher than it was this time last week.
20. Billy Idol – “White Wedding” Here comes Billy again for his second top 40 entry and it’s his white wedding that remains in the top twenty, but down three places.
19. Huey Lewis and The News – “The Power Of Love” Good news for Huey Lewis and The News this week as their latest single, from the film ‘Back To The Future’, rockets into the top twenty, up twelve places.
18. Madness – “Yesterday’s Men” Meanwhile, Madness make their return to the top twenty with their new song, which is up three places in week three.
17. Lisa Lisa and The Cult Jam – “I Wonder If I Take You Home” Going down four are Lisa Lisa and The Cult Jam with their very first UK chart hit. The band released their self-titled debut album last month.
16. The Thompson Twins – “Don’t Mess With Dr. Dream” Also going down with their brand new single are The Thompson Twins. Seven days on from their top twenty return and the song drops one place.
15. Dan Hartman – “I Can Dream About You” And also going down is Dan Hartman, who misses out on a top ten hit this week, as he slips back three places with his first big hit this decade.
14. Dire Straits – “Money For Nothing” Having taken all their money, Dire Straits leave the top ten this week, down five places with the second single to come from their latest album.
13. Marillion – “Lavender” Having returned to the chart last week with this track, Marillion climb ten places and make for the top ten for the second time this year.
12. Amii Stewart – “Knock On Wood” With a little help from her friends, Amii Stewart goes up again, this week finds her four places higher and in the same spot as her last single peaked.
11. King – “Alone Without You” The first of the royals on the chart this week is the King and they are going down three places and out of the top ten.
10. Mai Tai – “Body And Soul” Mai Tai are back in the top ten for the second time this year. The follow up to “History” goes up one to make it so.
9. Princess – “Say I’m Your Number One” The other chart royal is Princess and she too is going down, the other way to her number one dream as she falls two places.
8. Kate Bush – “Running Up That Hill” Running down that hill is Kate Bush with her brand new track, which is out of the top five in week five and down three places.
7. Madonna – “Into The Groove” Like Billy Idol, Madonna has two songs on the chart and her former number one is also down three this week, after two months on the chart.
6. The Cars – “Drive” Putting the breaks on this week are The Cars as their former top five hit is a non-mover for a second week running.
5. Stevie Wonder – “Part Time Lover” Stevie Wonder returned to the UK chart last week with his brand new song and it enjoys a great week two with a climb of fifteen places, it’s the highest of them all!
4. Baltimora – “Tarzan Boy” It looks like Baltimora have swung all the trees they can with this number, which drops down one place and out of the top three.
3. UB40 and Chrissie Hynde – “I Got You Babe” The former chart topping cover of Sonny and Cher‘s former number one from UB40 and The Pretenders’ Chrissie Hynde is also down one.
2. Bonnie Tyler – “Holding Out For A Hero” While last week’s highest climber from Bonnie Tyler goes up eight places to put her within reach of the top spot for the first time in two years.
1. David Bowie and Mick Jagger – “Dancing In The Street” Which means that last week’s highest new entry from David Bowie and Mick Jagger stays top of the lot for a second week. Can they make it three in a row, however, or will Bonnie, Stevie or someone else stop them? There’s only one way to find out…
