UK Top 40 Singles Chart for 27th October 1985

So this was the chart that Radio 1 DJ Richard Skinner broadcast from 5pm-7pm with data from the GALLUP computer based on record sales.

This is how the charts USED to look with new entries, climbers and non-movers, all based solely on record purchases.
This week there were seven new entrys, twelve climbers and five non-movers! And it was announced like this…

40. The Communards – “You Are My World”
We debut this week with a debut from a new duo called The Communards, who count among their number former Bronski Beat singer Jimmy Somerville!

39. Dire Straits – “Brothers In Arms”
Next up are Dire Straits, no strangers to the chart and back with the title track of their current album, which is single number three.

38. Eurythmics and Aretha Franklin – “Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves”
An unlikely pairing next as the Eurythmics join forces with the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin, for this new entry proving sisters can do it for themselves.

37. Cliff Richard – “She’s So Beautiful”
Eight weeks on and the latest from Cliff Richard remains top 40, but down twelve places as he still thinks she’s beautiful.

36. Madonna – “Angel”
While one of Madonna’s singles notches up seven weeks this time, down six places, however, one of many that have come from her album “Like A Virgin“.

35. Sade – “The Sweetest Taboo”
No such luck for Sade as their first top 40 showing of this year falls four in its third week and it could be its last.

34. Madness – “Uncle Sam”
Madness had said they were “Yesterday’s Men” with their last top twenty hit and follow that up with “Uncle Sam” to give them this new entry.

33. Cameo – “Single Life”
It’s been a single life for Cameo for two months now with this single and they stay top 40 but down fourteen places.

32. Maria Vidal – “Body Rock”
It’s been ten weeks for Maria Vidal’s first UK chart hit as she also falls ten places and out of the top thirty here.

31. Simon May – “Howard’s Way Theme”
Howard’s Way is the new Sunday night drama series and composer Simon May has written the theme song, which has been released as a record and lands a position in the top 40 today.

30. David Bowie and Mick Jagger – “Dancing In The Street”
The former number one from David Bowie and Mick Jagger drops nine this week, in the pair’s ninth week on the chart.

29. Far Corporation – “Stairway To Heaven”
The Far Corporation are a German band that have been brought together for this cover of Led Zeppelin’s rock classic and they bring the song back to the UK top 40 for the first time since 1971.

28. Bonnie Tyler – “Holding Out For A Hero”
Bonnie Tyler continues to stay higher than the song that kept her off the top. This week she falls ten places in week ten!

27. ZZ Top – “Sleeping Bag”
Sleeping bags at the ready, but it does mean ZZ Top proceed no further with this track and stay where they landed for another night.

26. Talking Heads – “Road To Nowhere”
This week’s highest new entry comes from Talking Heads with the second single to come from their latest album, “Little Creatures”, but the first to reach the UK top 40.

25. The Cult – “Rain”
Having been non-movers for the last two weeks, the second top twenty hit from The Cult drops eight places.

24. Stevie Wonder – “Part Time Lover”
While Stevie Wonder leaves the top twenty as well, taking his “Part Time Lover” also down eight places.

23. Siouxsie and The Banshees – “Cities In Dust”
Good news for Siouxsie and The Banshees as their brand new single climbs thirteen places in their second week on the chart.

22. The Thompson Twins – “King For A Day”
And that goes for The Thompson Twins as well as they want to be kings for more than a day and take their latest up seven places.

21. Echo and The Bunnymen – “Bring On The Dancing Horses”
While Echo and The Bunnymen climb two this week with their latest and the first new song from their upcoming greatest hits album.

20. Kate Bush – “Cloudbusting”
Also going up is Kate Bush with the follow up to “Running Up That Hill”, which climbs six places into the top twenty.

19. UB40 – “Don’t Break My Heart”
UB40 perform much better in their second week as the follow up to their number one rockets up sixteen places!

18. Billy Idol – “Rebel Yell”
Billy Idol has been yelling for two months with this track and it’s still top twenty, but down this week by seven places.

17. Matt Bianco – “Yeh Yeh”
Four weeks on and Matt Bianco are still going up, still in bite-size steps as they join the upper half of the chart, up seven places.

16. Midge Ure – “If I Was”
The former number one from Midge Ure goes down eight this week and out of the top ten, with eight weeks on the chart as well.

15. King – “The Taste Of Your Tears”
Last week’s highest climber came from King and the song goes up five a week on. It’s the band’s third top twenty hit this year.

14. Red Box – “Lean On Me”
Departing the top ten are British band Red Box who fall four places with their very first top 40 charting single.

13. Grace Jones – “Slave To The Rhythm”
May day! May day! Having blown herself up at the end of this year’s Bond film, Grace Jones‘ latest single blows up and drops back one place.

12. Feargal Sharkey – “A Good Heart”
Going really good is Feargal Sharkey, however, his new entry from last week gives him his first top twenty showing and with a climb of twenty places, it’s this week’s highest!

11. Shakin’ Stevens – “Lipstick, Powder And Paint”
While going up four is the latest single from Shakin’ Stevens, his version of the Big Joe Turner song from 1956.

10. Simple Minds – “Alive And Kicking”
Alive and kicking they are not as the latest from Simple Minds drops three places having equalled their previous best earlier this year.

9. Level 42 – “Something About You”
It’s taken six weeks but Level 42 make it to the top ten as they climb four places. This is their first since “The Sun Goes Down (Living It Up)” in 1983.

8. Jan Hammer – “Miami Vice Theme”
The theme from the TV series from American based composer Jan Hammer spends one week in the top five and goes down three the next.

7. Arcadia – “Election Day”
Last week’s highest new entry came from three members of Duran Duran, now calling themselves Arcadia and it’s working as they go up seven places.

6. John Parr – “St. Elmo’s Fire”
What isn’t working is this song from the film of the same name as John Parr suffers a THIRD consecutive week in the same chart position!

5. Madonna – “Gambler”
For now, this song peaks for Madonna as she drops back one place with the most recent cut from the film ‘Vision Quest’ and its soundtrack.

4. Elton John – “Nikita”
Doing well again is the new single from Elton John as he moves into the top five, up five places. His new album is out in a week’s time.

3. Colonel Abrams – “Trapped”
Like John Parr, Colonel Abrams feels trapped yet again as he too has to contend with a non-mover for a third week in a row.

2. a-ha – “Take On Me”
While the boys from Norway, a-ha are non-movers for a second week in second place with their very first chart hit here in the UK.

1. Jennifer Rush – “The Power Of Love”
So for a fourth week it’s Jennifer Rush that has the power to stay at the top of the chart. But does she have the power for a fifth, or will Elton John or one of the non-movers break out and claim the top spot? There’s only one way to find out…
